Chapter 14: The Father Who Never Knew

Martin Ellison arrived under police escort at 11:40 p.m.

He was in his late forties, with dark hair beginning to gray at the temples and a deep crease between his eyebrows.

He carried no briefcase.

Only a small leather folder.

The moment he entered the room, Eli looked up.

Martin stopped.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the boy.

Eli stared back.

Then he asked a question that made Martin's eyes fill.

“Are you my real dad?””

Martin swallowed.

He lowered himself to one knee.

“I believe I am, Eli.””

The boy looked confused.

“Why didn't you come see me?””

Martin's face crumpled.

“Because I didn't know you existed until recently.””

“Mom knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't she tell you?””

Martin looked toward June.

She nodded for him to answer honestly.

“Your mother was afraid. She thought telling me could make things more dangerous while Derek was still around.””

Eli considered that.

“Were you mad?””

“No, son.””

Martin's voice broke.

“I was heartbroken. But not at you. Never at you.””

Eli looked at his shoes.

“Did you want me?””

Martin reached out but stopped before touching him.

“I wanted to know you. I still do. But you don't owe me anything just because we're related.””

Hank watched quietly.

He had seen many men claim to be fathers.

Very few had the courage to admit they had missed nine years.

June approached.

“Martin, we need to talk about the birth certificate.””

Martin nodded.

He opened his folder.

“Someone stole the original document from my office. But I have certified copies of the records Rachel gave me.””

Detective Harris took them.

“Why was there a different birth certificate?””

Martin exhaled.

“Rachel originally registered Eli with Derek's surname. Derek signed the acknowledgment of paternity. At the time, Rachel believed he would raise Eli as his own.””

June frowned.

“But if Martin is the biological father…”

“Rachel had a DNA test done privately,” Martin explained.

“She gave me the results shortly before she died.””

Harris examined the paperwork.

“Why didn't she correct the legal record?””

“She was trying to protect Eli. Derek had already become controlling. She feared that challenging his paternity could trigger a custody battle.””

June sat down.

“My daughter was trapped.””

Martin nodded.

“She was trying to get out.””

He opened another section of the folder.

“There is something else.””

Inside was a sealed legal document.

Rachel's signature appeared at the bottom.

“This is the original trust agreement. The one Richard is trying to obtain.””

Harris examined it.

“Why is it still valid if the birth certificate is disputed?””

“Because the trust was established independently. Eli is the named beneficiary. The paternity issue doesn't change that.””

“Then why does Richard care so much?””

Martin looked at June.

“Because the trust includes an anti-interference clause.””

“What does that mean?””

“If anyone attempts to manipulate Eli's guardianship or conceal evidence to gain control of his inheritance, that person can be permanently excluded from any benefit connected to the trust.””

Hank gave a low whistle.

“Rachel thought of everything.””

Martin shook his head.

“Not everything. She couldn't predict how far Richard would go.””

Vanessa spoke from the couch.

“Richard isn't after the money for himself.””

Everyone turned.

“What do you mean?”” Harris asked.

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“I found out something while I was working with him.””

She hesitated.

“Richard has been moving money into an account overseas. Millions of dollars. He planned to disappear once Eli turned ten and the trust became vulnerable to his legal manipulation.””

Martin frowned.

“Why would the trust become vulnerable?””

“Because Richard intended to present forged documents claiming Derek had transferred custody to him.””

Harris nodded slowly.

“The document we found tonight.””

Vanessa agreed.

“Exactly.””

Martin looked at the papers.

“Then we need to establish who prepared the forged signature.””

June's voice was barely audible.

“I never signed anything.””

“I believe you,” Martin replied.

Harris stood.

“We'll have the document examined.””

Then Martin looked at Eli.

“There's something your mother wanted me to tell you.””

Eli approached slowly.

“What?””

Martin reached into his folder and removed a small photograph.

It showed Rachel sitting beside a newborn baby in a hospital bed.

June recognized the moment immediately.

It was taken the day Eli was born.

On the back, Rachel had written:

The best thing that ever happened to me.

Martin smiled through his tears.

“She gave me this photograph when we met. She said she wanted me to know that you were happy and healthy.””

Eli touched the photograph.

“Can I keep it?””

“Of course.””

The boy studied the image.

Then he asked:

“Can I call you Martin?””

Martin nodded.

“Absolutely.””

“Maybe later I can call you Dad?””

Martin's face crumpled completely.

“Whenever you're ready.””

Hank looked away.

Even Boone, who had been pretending to examine the television, wiped his eyes.

For a brief moment, the room felt peaceful.

Then Detective Harris's phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

A voice spoke rapidly.

Harris's expression changed.

“Repeat that.””

He listened.

Then he turned toward Martin.

“Your office wasn't the only place Richard entered tonight.””

Martin frowned.

“What else?””

“The courthouse.””

June stood.

“What would he want there?””

Harris looked at the papers.

“Rachel's original trust filing.””

Martin went pale.

“That document contains the sealed guardianship instructions.””

“Can he access them?””

“Not without authorization.””

Harris was already moving toward the door.

“Then we need to find out what he was looking for.””

Martin grabbed his coat.

“I'm coming.””

“No,” Harris said.

“You'll stay here.””

“But the documents—”

“Your safety matters more than paperwork.””

Hank stepped forward.

“Detective, let me know if you need help.””

Harris shook his head.

“Stay with the family.””

Then he left.

Ten minutes later, his phone rang again.

This time, he put it on speaker.

“Detective?””

“We found Richard.””

“Where?””

“At the courthouse basement entrance.””

“Is he in custody?””

A pause.

“Yes. But there's a complication.””

“What complication?””

“He has a woman with him.””

“Who?””

Harris heard the officer hesitate.

Then the answer came.

“Vanessa Cole.””

Everyone in the room turned toward the woman sitting on the couch.

Vanessa looked horrified.

“That's impossible. I'm right here.””

The detective frowned.

“Then who is the woman Richard brought to the courthouse?””

A photograph arrived.

It showed a woman wearing Vanessa's coat.

Same hair.

Same height.

Same face.

June stared.

Vanessa slowly stood.

Then she whispered:

“That's my sister.””

Hank looked at her.

“You have a sister?””

Vanessa nodded.

“An identical twin.””

She covered her mouth.

“I haven't seen her in eleven years.””

Martin stepped forward.

“What is her name?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph again.

“Victoria.””

Harris spoke through the phone.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“Richard says Victoria has the original recording of Rachel's final night.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. She wouldn't have that.””

Harris continued.

“And he says she isn't helping him willingly.””

The line crackled.

Then came another voice.

A woman's voice.

“Tell Vanessa I'm sorry.””

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

May you like

“Tell her Richard has Lily.””

Vanessa screamed.
