Chapter 10: The Secret Eli Had Been Carrying

Nobody spoke.

Detective Harris slowly lowered his phone.

“Eli, what do you mean your mother gave you the last copy?””

The boy looked down at his sneakers.

“Mom said I had to keep it safe.””

June knelt in front of him.

“Sweetheart, why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Dad said if I told anybody, something bad would happen to you.””

June's eyes filled immediately.

“Oh, baby.””

She reached for him, but Eli stepped backward.

Not because he didn't want her.

Because he was remembering something.

Hank noticed.

“Take your time, champ. Nobody's rushing you.””

Eli rubbed his palms against his jeans.

“It was the night of the storm. Mommy woke me up and told me to get dressed.””

June remembered the rain that night.

She remembered Rachel calling her two days earlier, asking whether the basement door still had its old lock.

At the time, June hadn't understood the question.

“What happened after she woke you?”” Harris asked.

“Mom put something inside my backpack.””

“What did it look like?””

“A little black thing. Like a phone, but smaller.””

Hank exchanged a glance with the detective.

“Was it a recording device?””

Eli nodded.

“Mom said it was important.””

“Where is it now?””

Eli hesitated.

Then he touched the small fabric dinosaur attached to his backpack.

“This.””

June stared.

The dinosaur had been hanging from his schoolbag when he arrived at the diner.

She had assumed it was an ordinary toy.

“Eli, sweetheart, what about it?””

He carefully unzipped the dinosaur's worn belly.

Inside was a tiny pocket sewn into the fabric.

He reached in and pulled out a small black memory card wrapped in a piece of tissue paper.

Detective Harris stared.

“Is that what your mother gave you?””

Eli nodded.

“She said nobody would look inside my dinosaur.””

June pressed a hand over her mouth.

Hank crouched beside him.

“Your mom trusted you with something very important.””

Eli's eyes filled.

“I didn't want to lose it.””

“You didn't,” Hank replied.

“You kept it safe.””

The detective took the memory card using fresh gloves and placed it in an evidence container.

“I'm going to have this examined immediately.””

Eli looked worried.

“Will you give it back?””

Harris knelt.

“We'll make a secure copy. We'll make sure nothing happens to it.””

“Promise?””

“I promise we'll take care of it.””

The forensic technician arrived shortly afterward.

He worked at the dining table while everyone waited.

June sat with Eli.

Hank paced near the kitchen.

Boone stood outside, speaking with the officers at the front gate.

Finally, the technician looked up.

“Detective, there's a video file.””

Harris approached.

“Can you play it?””

“Yes. It's encrypted, but the file itself is intact.””

The screen flickered.

A familiar kitchen appeared.

Rachel was sitting at the table.

She looked thinner than in the previous recording, but she was alert.

The camera angle suggested it had been placed inside a small decorative object.

Rachel glanced toward the doorway.

Then she spoke directly to the camera.

“If you're watching this, something has happened to me.””

June began crying.

Rachel continued.

“My name is Rachel Mitchell. I am recording this because I believe my husband, Derek, my brother-in-law, Richard, and a man named Samuel Reed are involved in a plan to steal my identity, drain my financial accounts, and make my death look natural.””

Hank stopped pacing.

The video continued.

“I discovered that Derek has been using my signature on documents connected to his repair business. He has also been transferring money from accounts I established before our marriage.””

Rachel held up several papers.

“I found payments to Richard. I found payments to Dr. Reed. And I found evidence that someone has been changing my medical records.””

She took a shaky breath.

“I don't know exactly what they're planning. But I know they want me out of the way.””

June whispered, “Oh, Rachel.””

Then Rachel looked directly into the camera.

“There's one more thing.””

She picked up a photograph.

It showed Derek standing beside a woman outside a hotel.

June frowned.

“Who's that?””

The technician zoomed in.

Rachel's voice continued.

“This is not just about money. Derek has been using my name to maintain a second household. The woman in this photograph is Vanessa Cole.””

Hank looked at Detective Harris.

“Vanessa?””

The detective leaned closer.

The photograph showed Vanessa holding a little girl.

Rachel continued.

“Derek told me Vanessa was an employee. He lied. They have been together for years.””

June stared at the screen.

“Does that mean…”

Hank finished quietly.

“He may have another child.””

Rachel placed the photograph down.

“I confronted Derek about it. He told me I was imagining things. Then he threatened to take Eli away if I told anyone.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“My son is not a bargaining chip. He's a child.””

She looked toward the doorway.

“Eli deserves a life without fear.””

The video stopped.

The room remained silent.

Detective Harris immediately requested additional background checks on Vanessa and her daughter.

Then he turned toward Eli.

“Buddy, did your mother ever tell you about the little girl in that photograph?””

Eli shook his head.

“No.””

Hank looked at June.

“There's something else going on here.””

Before anyone could answer, the technician spoke again.

“Detective, there's another file.””

Harris turned.

“What kind?””

“An audio recording. Dated three days before Rachel died.””

He pressed play.

Rachel's voice emerged.

“Derek, I know about Vanessa.””

A chair scraped.

Derek answered.

“You had no right to look through my things.””

“You've been lying to me for years.””

“It's complicated.””

“No. What's complicated is explaining to our son why his father has another family.””

Derek laughed.

“You're sick, Rachel.””

“I have the documents.””

Silence.

Then Derek said something that made June grip the edge of the table.

“You should have stayed out of my business.””

The recording ended.

Detective Harris immediately contacted his team.

They now had evidence suggesting financial fraud, falsified medical records, possible medical poisoning, and a motive involving both money and an undisclosed relationship.

But one question remained.

Why had Dr. Reed disappeared?

And what had happened inside the storage building?

Harris received another call.

He listened carefully.

Then he looked toward Hank.

“Dr. Reed is alive.””

“Where?””

“An ambulance has taken him to County General. He was found unconscious in the storage building.””

“Was he attacked?””

“Possibly. But before losing consciousness, he told the responding officers something.””

Hank waited.

“What?””

The detective looked at the memory card.

“He said Derek wasn't the person who planned Rachel's death.””

June felt the room spin.

“Then who was?””

May you like

Harris looked at Eli.

“According to Dr. Reed, Richard was the one who organized it.””
