Chapter 12: The Confession Nobody Expected

Vanessa arrived at June's house just after nine that evening.

Two officers accompanied her.

Her daughter, Lily, walked beside her, holding a small stuffed rabbit.

Eli was sitting on the couch when the front door opened.

He looked up.

For a moment, he didn't recognize the woman.

Then his eyes widened.

“Vanessa?””

She stopped.

“Hi, Eli.””

The boy stood.

“Where's your daughter?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“She's right here.””

Lily stepped forward.

“Are you Eli?””

He nodded.

“My mom talked about you.””

Eli looked down.

“Did she?””

“All the time.””

Vanessa knelt.

“She said you were the bravest little boy she knew.””

Eli's eyes filled.

“I wasn't brave.””

Vanessa looked at him carefully.

“Your mother thought differently.””

June approached.

“Vanessa, we need to talk.””

“I know.””

They sat at the dining table.

Detective Harris remained nearby, taking notes.

Hank stood by the kitchen entrance.

Boone had taken Lily into the living room to show her some toy motorcycles on his phone.

Vanessa placed a thick folder on the table.

“I've kept copies of everything.””

June stared at it.

“What is this?””

“Bank transfers. Fake invoices. Messages between Derek and Richard. And a list of the people who helped them.””

Detective Harris opened the folder.

“Where did you get these?””

“Rachel gave me some of them. I copied the rest from Derek's office.””

“Why didn't you turn them over sooner?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I was scared. Richard made it clear that my daughter would pay if I spoke.””

June's voice trembled.

“And Rachel?””

Vanessa looked up.

“I failed her.””

“No,” June said quietly.

“You were afraid. But you could have helped her.””

“I know.””

The room fell silent.

Vanessa opened the folder.

“There are records showing that Derek took out an additional life insurance policy on Rachel. He increased the coverage four months before she died.””

June stared.

“How much?””

“Two million dollars.””

June gripped the table.

“Two million?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Richard arranged it through a broker. Derek told me Rachel had agreed to the policy.””

“Did she?””

“No. I found her signature on the application, but she told me she never signed it.””

Detective Harris examined the documents.

“Do you have proof of the forgery?””

“Rachel recorded a conversation about it.””

“Where?””

Vanessa looked toward Eli.

“It's in the original recording collection.””

June frowned.

“We found a memory card.””

“Not all of it. Rachel made several copies. One was with me.””

Vanessa reached into her handbag and produced a small USB drive.

“The other recordings are here.””

The detective accepted it.

“We'll have this examined.””

Vanessa nodded.

Then she turned toward June.

“There's something I need to tell you about the night Rachel died.””

June went completely still.

“What?””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“I was supposed to meet her that evening.””

“Why?””

“She wanted to leave Derek. She had already packed some clothes for Eli.””

June's eyes filled.

“Why didn't she come?””

“Derek found out.””

Vanessa looked at her hands.

“He called me and told me not to go near the house. He said Rachel was having another medical episode and that the family needed privacy.””

June's voice cracked.

“You believed him?””

“I did. I didn't know what he had done until the next morning.””

Hank stepped forward.

“What happened the next morning?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I received a message from Richard. Then Derek called me.””

“What did he say?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He told me Rachel had died peacefully.””

June began shaking.

“He said that to you?””

“Yes.””

“What else?””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“He said Eli would be staying with him. He told me not to contact June because she was unstable.””

June stood so abruptly that her chair scraped backward.

“My daughter was dead, and he was already making plans to keep her child away from me?””

Vanessa nodded.

June turned away, struggling to breathe.

Hank quietly pulled out another chair.

“Sit down, June.””

She lowered herself into it.

After a moment, Vanessa continued.

“Richard told me they needed to move Eli somewhere private until the insurance money was released.””

Detective Harris looked up.

“Why?””

“Because Eli had overheard things. They thought he might tell someone.””

Eli was standing near the doorway.

He had heard every word.

“That's why Dad locked me in the trailer?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I think so, sweetheart.””

“But he said it was because I was bad.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“No, Eli. You were never bad.””

The boy looked toward Hank.

Hank approached and placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Remember what I told you? None of this was your fault.””

Eli nodded.

Then he asked the question that made every adult in the room go silent.

“Did my dad love me?””

June immediately opened her arms.

“Of course you are loved, sweetheart.””

But Eli wasn't looking at her.

He was looking at Vanessa.

“Did he love me enough not to hurt Mommy?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Hank crouched beside him.

“Sometimes adults make terrible choices. Those choices belong to them. You don't have to carry them.””

Eli began crying.

June pulled him into her arms.

For several minutes, the only sound in the room was the little boy's sobbing.

Then Detective Harris's phone rang.

He stepped into the hallway.

“Yes?””

A voice answered.

“Detective, we have a problem with Derek Mitchell.””

“What happened?””

“He was taken into custody for questioning, but his attorney has arrived with documents claiming Derek transferred custody of Eli to a relative several months ago.””

Harris frowned.

“What relative?””

“His brother, Richard.””

The detective looked back into the dining room.

“That makes no sense. Richard has no custody rights.””

“The documents are notarized.””

“Send them to me.””

A moment later, the files arrived.

Harris opened the first page.

Then the second.

His expression hardened.

“That's impossible.””

He returned to the dining room.

“June, I need you to look at something.””

He placed the document on the table.

June read it.

Then she stared at the signature.

“That's mine.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“What?””

June shook her head.

“I never signed this.””

The document stated that June had voluntarily agreed to transfer temporary guardianship of Eli to Richard Mitchell.

It carried her name, her address, and a notarized signature.

But June had never seen it before.

Detective Harris studied the paper.

“Someone forged your signature.””

Hank leaned over the table.

“When was this supposedly signed?””

“Six months ago,” Harris replied.

June looked at the date.

It was the same week Derek had told her that Eli was too emotionally fragile to visit.

The same week June had received a phone call claiming Rachel had left instructions that Eli should remain with his father.

June covered her mouth.

“He planned this before I even knew what was happening.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Richard told me they needed a legal way to keep Eli away from you.””

Detective Harris looked at her.

“Did he say why?””

Vanessa reached into her folder and pulled out another document.

“This is the reason.””

It was a trust agreement.

Rachel had established a financial trust for Eli before her death.

The document named June as the intended guardian and trustee.

But there was a condition.

If Derek lost custody because of neglect, abuse, or criminal conduct, the trust would release control of a substantial inheritance to Eli through an independent trustee.

June stared at the amount.

Nearly four million dollars.

Hank whistled quietly.

“So this was never just about the insurance.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. Richard wanted control of the trust. He knew that if June became Eli's legal guardian, neither brother would be able to touch the money.””

Detective Harris examined the final page.

“Who is the independent trustee?””

Vanessa pointed to the name.

June read it aloud.

“Martin Ellison.””

She looked up.

“I know him. He was Rachel's attorney.””

Harris nodded.

“We'll contact him first thing tomorrow.””

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“There is one more thing.””

Everyone turned.

“Richard told me something before Rachel died. He said the trust wasn't the only reason they needed Eli.””

Hank's expression tightened.

“What else?””

Vanessa looked toward the boy.

“Rachel had placed something inside the trust documents. Something that could expose everyone involved in the fraud.””

June frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Eli's birth certificate.””

June looked confused.

“What's wrong with his birth certificate?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.

“Derek isn't listed as his biological father.””

The room went silent.

Hank slowly turned toward Eli.

June stared at Vanessa.

“That's impossible. Derek was there when Rachel gave birth.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Derek knew. He signed the acknowledgment anyway.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Who is Eli's biological father?””

Vanessa looked directly at June.

Then she said a name nobody in the room expected.

“Martin Ellison.””

June stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.

“Rachel's attorney?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He and Rachel had a relationship years before she married Derek. He never knew Eli existed until Rachel contacted him shortly before her death.””

Hank stared at the documents.

Suddenly, the four-million-dollar trust, the forged guardianship papers, and Derek's desperation to keep Eli hidden made a terrible kind of sense.

But June wasn't listening anymore.

She was looking at her grandson.

Eli was confused.

“Grandma?””

June dropped to her knees and held his face gently.

“Nothing changes how much I love you. Do you understand?””

He nodded uncertainly.

Then Detective Harris's phone rang again.

This time, the caller was Martin Ellison.

Harris answered.

“Mr. Ellison?””

The man's voice was urgent.

“Detective, I just received your message. There's something you need to know about Eli's trust.””

“What?””

“The trust doesn't release the money automatically when Derek loses custody.””

Harris frowned.

“Then what triggers it?””

A long pause followed.

Then Martin answered.

“Eli has to turn ten.””

June looked at the boy.

His ninth birthday had been only two months earlier.

Martin continued.

“And there's a second condition. Rachel left a sealed statement naming the person who was supposed to receive custody of Eli.””

“Who?””

Martin's voice dropped.

“Not June. Not Derek. And not Richard.””

He paused.

“Rachel named someone else.””

Hank looked toward June.

“Who did she name?””

Martin answered.

“Vanessa Cole.””

Vanessa's face went completely white.

And before anyone could ask another question, she whispered:

May you like

“Richard knows.””

At that exact moment, every light in June's house went out.
