Chapter 11: The Brother Who Planned Everything

Richard Mitchell had always been the quieter brother.

Derek was loud, impatient, and quick to lose his temper.

Richard was different.

He spoke softly. He dressed neatly. He never raised his voice unless he wanted someone to notice.

At family gatherings, he was the man who offered to clear the plates and refill everyone's drinks.

Rachel had once described him as the kind of person who could make a lie sound like a favor.

Now Detective Harris was beginning to understand why.

At County General, Dr. Samuel Reed lay in a hospital bed with a bandage around his forehead.

An officer stood outside the room.

Harris entered with another detective.

“Dr. Reed.””

The doctor opened his eyes.

“Detective.””

“We need to talk about what happened at the repair shop.””

Reed looked toward the door.

“Am I under arrest?””

“Not at this moment. But your answers may affect what happens next.””

Reed swallowed.

“Richard did this.””

“What happened?””

“He came to the shop looking for the recording.””

“Which recording?””

“The original recording of Rachel's final night.””

Harris pulled up a chair.

“Why did Richard want it?””

“Because he knew what was on it.””

“Explain.””

Reed stared at the ceiling.

“Richard arranged everything. Derek was supposed to handle the financial side. I was supposed to manage the medical records.””

“Manage them how?””

“Change them. Make it appear that Rachel's deterioration was consistent with her diagnosis.””

Harris leaned forward.

“Did you administer medication to her?””

Reed closed his eyes.

“I provided medication that was not prescribed by her treating physician.””

“Why?””

“Richard said it was necessary.””

“Necessary for what?””

“To make her condition appear worse.””

The detective remained silent.

Reed began sweating.

“I didn't know how far things would go.””

Harris's voice hardened.

“You signed a false death certification.””

“I was pressured.””

“That's not an answer.””

Reed looked toward the officer.

“Richard had information about my financial problems. He knew I had falsified prescriptions years earlier. He said he could ruin me.””

“So you helped him.””

Reed nodded.

“What happened on the night Rachel died?””

Reed's eyes filled.

“I was there. Richard brought the medication. Derek was supposed to give it to her.””

“Did he?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know it could kill her?””

Reed didn't answer immediately.

Then he whispered:

“I knew it was dangerous.””

Harris stared at him.

“And you gave it to her anyway?””

“I thought we had more time.””

The detective stood.

“That's enough for now.””

But Reed grabbed his sleeve.

“Wait.””

Harris turned.

“There is something else.””

“What?””

“Derek didn't know everything. Richard told him Rachel would eventually die from her illness. He promised Derek that nobody would ever connect it to the medication.””

“Why would Derek agree?””

Reed looked ashamed.

“Because Richard promised him the insurance money.””

Harris's expression darkened.

“Life insurance?””

“More than that. Rachel had an investment account, property, and a business interest. Richard knew exactly how much everything was worth.””

The detective took out his notebook.

“Who benefited from her death?””

“Derek. Richard. And someone else.””

“Who?””

Reed hesitated.

“Vanessa Cole.””

Harris stared.

“Explain.””

“Richard had been moving money through a company registered under Vanessa's name. He told me she was helping him.””

“Was she?””

“I don't know. But he said she had a daughter with Derek.””

Back at June's house, the same revelation was unfolding.

Hank stood beside the fireplace while June listened to Detective Harris on speakerphone.

“Richard claims Vanessa was part of the financial arrangement,” Harris explained.

“We're trying to determine whether she was a participant or an informant.””

June shook her head.

“Rachel trusted her.””

“Which may be why Vanessa has been trying to reach you.””

Eli looked up.

“Is Vanessa bad?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Hank crouched.

“We don't know yet, buddy. Sometimes people are involved in things they later regret.””

Eli thought about that.

“Mom said Vanessa was nice.””

June brushed his hair.

“Your mother knew her better than we did.””

Harris continued.

“We're also reviewing the information from the memory card. There's enough to seek additional warrants.””

“Will Derek be arrested?”” June asked.

“We're coordinating with the prosecutor.””

The call ended.

Hank looked at June.

“We need to find Vanessa.””

Boone entered from the porch.

“Marcus has an update.””

“What?””

“They found her.””

June stood.

“Where?””

“At a motel outside town. She's alive, but she won't open the door.””

Hank grabbed his jacket.

Detective Harris had already instructed officers to approach carefully.

June insisted on going.

Harris refused.

“Mrs. Mitchell, it's too dangerous.””

“She knew my daughter. She might be the only person who can explain what happened.””

“We'll bring her here if she's willing.””

Eli tugged at June's sleeve.

“Grandma, can I tell her something?””

June knelt.

“What is it?””

“Mom said Vanessa had a little girl.””

“Yes.””

“She told me once that the girl was sick.””

Hank frowned.

“Did your mother say anything else?””

Eli nodded.

“She said Vanessa was trying to get enough money to take her daughter away from Dad.””

June looked confused.

“Why would she need to take her daughter away?””

Eli lowered his voice.

“Because Dad gets angry when people don't do what he says.””

Meanwhile, at the motel, Detective Harris stood outside Room 214.

“Ms. Cole? My name is Detective Harris. We're investigating Rachel Mitchell's death.””

Silence.

He continued.

“We have evidence that may connect Derek, Richard, and Dr. Reed to what happened.””

A chain rattled.

The door opened two inches.

Vanessa's face appeared.

She looked exhausted.

Her eyes were red, and her hair was pulled into a careless knot.

“Is Eli safe?””

“Yes.””

“Is he with June?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Thank God.””

Harris waited.

Then she opened the door.

Inside, a little girl sat on the bed watching cartoons.

She looked about six.

Vanessa immediately turned down the television.

“Sweetheart, go into the bathroom for a minute.””

The girl obeyed.

Harris remained near the doorway.

“Ms. Cole, we need to know what you know about Rachel.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“What I know could put half the town in prison.””

“Then start with the truth.””

Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed.

“Derek and I were together for years. He told me his marriage was over. He said Rachel was only staying because she wanted his money.””

“Was that true?””

“No. I found out later that he had been lying to both of us.””

She wiped her eyes.

“When Rachel discovered the financial records, she contacted me. She wanted help getting Eli away from Derek.””

“Did you help her?””

“I tried.””

“How?””

“I copied the documents. I recorded conversations. I gave her information about the fake businesses Richard was using.””

Harris leaned forward.

“Why didn't you go to the police?””

Vanessa looked toward the bathroom.

“Because Richard threatened my daughter.””

Her voice broke.

“He sent me photographs of her school. He told me he knew when she left and when she came home.””

Harris's expression tightened.

“Did you participate in the fraud?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I allowed them to use my name on one business account. I was stupid enough to believe it was temporary. When I realized what was happening, I tried to get out.””

“Did you know about the medication?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Yes.””

“Did you know Richard was giving Rachel something dangerous?””

“I found out three days before she died.””

“Why didn't you stop him?””

Vanessa began crying.

“Because I was afraid.””

Harris waited.

Then Vanessa reached beneath the mattress and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I've kept this since Rachel died.””

“What is it?””

“A message Richard sent me the morning after she passed.””

She handed it over.

The message was short.

Rachel's gone. Derek has the boy. Keep your mouth shut, and your daughter stays safe.

Harris photographed it.

Then Vanessa looked at him.

“There's something else you need to know.””

“What?””

“Richard wasn't the one who made the final decision.””

“Who did?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.

“Derek.””

She shook her head.

“Richard planned the scheme. But Derek knew what was happening, and he gave Rachel the medication himself.””

At that moment, the little girl emerged from the bathroom.

“Mommy?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Is the man outside coming to take us away?””

May you like

Vanessa looked at Detective Harris.

And for the first time, she seemed ready to tell everything.
