Chapter 13: The Woman Rachel Chose
The lights went out.
For one second, June heard nothing but the rain beginning to tap against the windows.
Then Eli screamed.
“GRANDMA!””
June reached for him in the darkness.
“I'm here, sweetheart! I've got you!””
Hank moved immediately.
“Everybody stay where you are!””
A chair scraped across the floor. Someone knocked over a glass. Outside, an engine roared to life.
Hank pulled his phone from his pocket and switched on the flashlight.
“Boone! Check the back door!””
“Already moving!””
Detective Harris drew his weapon but kept his voice controlled.
“Everyone away from the windows. Now!””
June held Eli against her chest.
Vanessa had gone completely still.
“Richard,” she whispered.
Hank turned toward her.
“What?””
“That's how he operates. He cuts the power before he comes inside.””
Detective Harris looked at her.
“Has he done this before?””
Vanessa nodded.
“At my old apartment. Twice. The first time, he took my laptop. The second time, he left a photograph of Lily's school on my kitchen table.””
Hank's expression hardened.
“Why didn't you report that?””
“I did. But he knew people who could make things disappear.””
A loud bang came from the backyard.
Boone shouted.
“Somebody's at the fence!””
Hank moved toward the hallway.
“Stay with the boy.””
He stepped outside with his flashlight.
Rain hit his leather vest as he crossed the porch.
At the rear of the property, Boone stood beside the wooden fence.
A dark figure was disappearing over the neighboring wall.
“Hey!”” Boone shouted.
The figure dropped something and ran.
Hank reached the fence just as a car door slammed somewhere down the street.
He didn't chase.
Instead, he examined what had been left behind.
A small brown envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Eli leaving school.
On the back, someone had written:
Ten years old is too late.
Hank stared at the words.
Then he turned toward the house.
When he showed Detective Harris, the detective immediately called for additional units.
“This is a direct threat,” Harris said.
“We're moving everyone to a secure location.””
June looked at Vanessa.
“Does Richard know where you are?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“He must.””
Eli was clutching his grandmother's sweater.
“Is Uncle Richard coming?””
June kissed his forehead.
“No, sweetheart.””
But Hank wasn't going to make promises he couldn't guarantee.
He crouched in front of the boy.
“Listen, Eli. We're going somewhere safe tonight. Your grandma is coming with you. So am I.””
Eli nodded.
“Can Boone come?””
Boone appeared in the doorway.
“Wouldn't miss it, little man.””
For the first time that evening, Eli smiled.
Within twenty minutes, the police had arranged temporary protection at a secure location.
Before leaving, Detective Harris called Martin Ellison again.
“Mr. Ellison, I need you to explain why Rachel named Vanessa as Eli's intended guardian.””
Martin sounded exhausted.
“Because Rachel believed Vanessa was the only person who could keep Derek and Richard away from him.””
“Why not June?””
“She loved June. But she was afraid the brothers would use June's address and her attachment to Eli to manipulate her.””
June closed her eyes.
That sounded exactly like something Rachel would have worried about.
Martin continued.
“Vanessa had access to evidence. She knew how the financial scheme worked. Rachel believed she could protect Eli if the situation became dangerous.””
Harris asked, “And the biological father issue?””
A long silence.
“I was in love with Rachel before she married Derek. We had a relationship. When she became pregnant, I was told she wanted to raise the child with her husband.””
“Did you know Derek wasn't the biological father?””
“No. Rachel told me the truth fourteen months ago.””
“Why didn't you come forward?””
“Because she asked me not to until she could secure Eli's future. She said Derek had become dangerous.””
June interrupted.
“Did you love her?””
Martin's voice softened.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you leave her?””
“I didn't know she needed me.””
June looked away.
The detective asked Martin to come to the secure location with his attorney the following morning.
He agreed.
At the temporary residence, Vanessa sat beside Lily while June helped Eli get ready for bed.
Hank stood outside the bedroom, speaking quietly with Boone.
“Something doesn't add up,” Hank said.
“What?””
“Richard knows about the trust. He knows about Vanessa. He knows Eli's birthday.””
Boone nodded.
“Then why hasn't he taken the documents?””
Hank looked through the doorway.
“Because he can't find the original.””
“Where is it?””
“That's what I'm worried about.””
Inside, June tucked Eli beneath the blankets.
“Would you like the hallway light on?””
“Yes, please.””
She left the door open.
Eli reached for her hand.
“Grandma?””
“Yes?””
“Does Mom's money belong to me?””
June smiled gently.
“Your mother wanted you to have a safe future. That's what matters.””
“Will I have to go live with Vanessa?””
June looked toward the living room.
She didn't know what the court would decide.
But she knew what Rachel had intended.
“We'll figure everything out together.””
Eli nodded.
Then he whispered:
“Mom told me Vanessa was supposed to be my new mom if something happened.””
June kissed his forehead.
“She must have trusted her very much.””
Eli closed his eyes.
A few minutes later, Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
“June?””
June stepped outside.
Vanessa held a folded document.
“I need to tell you something.””
“What?””
Vanessa unfolded the paper.
It was a letter from Rachel.
June recognized the handwriting immediately.
Vanessa,
If June is reading this, it means I've run out of time.
I know what I'm asking is unfair.
You have your own daughter to protect. You have already sacrificed too much.
But if Derek and Richard try to take Eli, please don't let them.
I am not asking you to replace me.
I'm asking you to give my son the childhood I couldn't guarantee.
June will love him. Martin will protect his future. But you know what those men are capable of.
Please keep him safe until the truth comes out.
Rachel.
June's eyes filled.
“She knew.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew she might not survive.””
June looked at the woman standing before her.
For months, she had imagined that Rachel's secrets were evidence of betrayal, greed, and fear.
Now she understood something else.
Her daughter had been trying to build a safety net for her son.
Even while dying.
June folded the letter carefully.
“I don't know whether I can accept everything Rachel planned.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I understand.””
“But I know she trusted you.””
Vanessa began crying.
June reached for her hand.
“Then let's make sure she wasn't wrong.””
At that moment, Detective Harris entered the room.
“Mrs. Mitchell, Vanessa, I need both of you.””
“What happened?”” June asked.
“We've located Richard's vehicle.””
“Where?””
“Outside the building where we found Dr. Reed.””
Hank appeared behind him.
“Did you arrest him?””
Harris shook his head.
“No. The vehicle was abandoned.””
“Then where is he?””
The detective looked at Vanessa.
“He left something behind.””
He handed her a photograph.
It showed a white envelope resting on the windshield.
Inside was a single sentence.
Ask Martin who signed Eli's first birth certificate.
Vanessa's hands began shaking.
June looked at the detective.
“What does that mean?””
Harris's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then slowly lowered it.
“Mr. Ellison is on his way here.””
“What happened?””
“He says someone just broke into his office.””
May you like
Harris looked at the photograph again.
“And the original birth certificate is missing.””
