Chapter 9: The Brother Who Sold His Family
Richard entered without waiting for an invitation.
He had always been comfortable in Marcus's house.
For years, he had walked through the front door carrying groceries, helping himself to coffee, and joking that he was practically the man of the house.
Today, nobody welcomed him.
His eyes immediately landed on Mrs. Carter.
"Well," he said, forcing a smile.
"I should have known you'd be involved.""
Mrs. Carter remained beside Zoe.
"Good morning, Richard.""
He ignored her.
"Marcus, can we speak privately?""
"No.""
Richard glanced at Zoe.
"This isn't something a child needs to hear.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"She's the reason we're having this conversation.""
Richard sighed.
"You're making a serious mistake.""
"Then explain the recordings.""
Richard's expression barely changed.
"What recordings?""
Marcus picked up the USB drive.
"The ones where you discuss making Zoe look unstable so you can interfere with her trust.""
Richard laughed.
"That's absurd. Those recordings are probably edited.""
"They're from my mother's files.""
"Your mother was sick.""
Mrs. Carter stepped forward.
"She was perfectly capable of understanding what you were doing.""
Richard turned toward her.
"Stay out of this.""
"I stayed out of it for too long.""
Marcus placed the photograph of Richard and Patricia on the desk.
"Who is Patricia Mills?""
Richard's eyes moved briefly to the picture.
"An educational consultant.""
"Why was she meeting you?""
"Business.""
"What business?""
"None of yours.""
Marcus stared at him.
"She's been interviewing my daughter without my knowledge.""
Richard shrugged.
"She was assessing whether Zoe needed additional support.""
"Support?""
"Marcus, let's be honest. You travel constantly. Lauren has been struggling. The household has become unstable.""
Marcus took a step closer.
"Because my daughter wasn't allowed to eat?""
Richard rolled his eyes.
"Don't be dramatic.""
The words hit Marcus like a slap.
He remembered Zoe's tiny packet of crackers.
Her empty dinner plate.
The way she had asked whether she was allowed to eat.
And now his brother was calling him dramatic.
Richard continued.
"Look, I understand you're upset. But you need to think about the bigger picture. The trust is worth a considerable amount of money.""
Marcus went still.
"How much?""
Richard hesitated.
"That's not important.""
"How much?""
"Approximately six hundred thousand dollars, depending on the final valuation.""
Zoe looked up.
Marcus glanced at her.
Then he turned back to his brother.
"That's why you did this?""
Richard shook his head.
"You're misunderstanding the situation.""
"Explain it.""
Richard loosened his tie.
"Your mother always favored you. She gave you the family business contacts, the larger inheritance, and now she's left Zoe a fortune. I was simply trying to make sure the estate was handled fairly.""
"Fairly?""
"Yes.""
"By taking money from a child?""
Richard's expression hardened.
"She doesn't need six hundred thousand dollars.""
Marcus almost laughed.
"That's your justification?""
"She has you. She has a father with a good income. Why should she receive everything while the rest of us get nothing?""
Mrs. Carter looked disgusted.
"Your mother left you an inheritance too.""
Richard turned sharply.
"Nobody asked you.""
Marcus leaned against the desk.
"How much did you take?""
Richard's jaw tightened.
"I didn't take anything.""
Marcus opened a bank statement.
"This account was opened under a company registered to you.""
Richard looked at it.
His face changed.
Marcus continued.
"Twenty-three thousand dollars transferred from Zoe's educational account into a business account six months ago.""
Richard took a step backward.
"That's not what it looks like.""
Marcus gave a bitter smile.
"Apparently, that's the favorite sentence in this family.""
Richard raised his voice.
"That money was temporarily moved to protect the estate!""
"From whom?""
"From Eleanor's increasingly irrational decisions!""
Marcus stared at him.
"She was protecting her granddaughter.""
Richard's expression turned ugly.
"She was manipulating everyone. She made you believe you were some perfect son, while I spent years cleaning up her mistakes.""
"Then why did you forge my email address?""
Richard went silent.
Marcus showed him the messages Mrs. Carter had preserved.
"You told her I had replied to her complaints. You made her believe I didn't want to hear from her.""
Richard looked toward the door.
"You're blowing this out of proportion.""
"No. I'm finally seeing the whole picture.""
Richard took a deep breath.
"Listen. We can resolve this privately. I'll return whatever money needs to be returned. Lauren and I can explain the situation to the attorney.""
Marcus frowned.
"Lauren and you?""
Richard looked at him.
He realized too late that he had said something revealing.
Marcus slowly asked, "How long have you been working together?""
Richard said nothing.
Mrs. Carter opened another folder.
"Your mother kept records of their meetings.""
She removed several printed receipts.
Restaurants.
Hotels.
Bank transfers.
Dates.
Marcus examined them.
There were meetings between Richard and Lauren stretching back almost two years.
One receipt showed a hotel room booked for two people.
Another showed a cash transfer to Richard shortly after Madison's car was purchased.
Marcus looked up.
"Did you receive money from the account you stole from Zoe?""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
Marcus placed the receipt in front of him.
Richard looked at it.
Then he sat down.
For the first time, he appeared genuinely worried.
Zoe stepped closer to her father.
"Uncle Richard?""
He glanced at her.
"What?""
"Did Grandma know?""
Richard didn't answer.
Zoe continued.
"Did she know you were taking my money?""
Richard looked uncomfortable.
"Zoe, this is complicated.""
"Did she know?""
He finally muttered, "Yes.""
Zoe's eyes filled.
"Then why didn't you stop?""
Richard looked away.
Marcus felt something inside him break.
He had spent his entire adult life believing that family meant loyalty.
But his brother had watched a little girl go hungry while trying to take control of the money meant for her future.
Marcus opened the front door.
"Leave.""
Richard stood.
"Marcus, don't be stupid.""
"Leave my house.""
"You're going to regret this.""
"Get out.""
Richard walked toward the entrance.
Before leaving, he turned around.
"You think you've won because you found some recordings? You have no idea what Eleanor signed before she died.""
Marcus frowned.
"What did she sign?""
Richard smiled faintly.
"Ask your lawyer about the amendment dated October 12.""
Then he walked out.
Marcus watched him get into his SUV.
He waited until the vehicle disappeared before closing the door.
Mrs. Carter looked worried.
"Mr. Marcus, what amendment?""
Marcus shook his head.
"I don't know.""
He called Daniel Whitmore immediately.
The attorney answered on the second ring.
"Marcus. I was expecting your call.""
"My brother just mentioned an amendment dated October 12. What is it?""
There was a pause.
Then Daniel spoke carefully.
"Your mother signed an additional document shortly before she died.""
"What document?""
"A conditional guardianship instruction.""
Marcus looked toward Zoe.
"What does that mean?""
"It means Eleanor anticipated that someone might attempt to interfere with Zoe's welfare or financial interests.""
"Who did she name?""
The attorney hesitated.
"Before I tell you, I need to verify that the conditions have been met.""
"Daniel, my daughter was locked in a room. Her money was stolen. My brother tried to have her removed from my home.""
"I understand.""
"Then tell me.""
Daniel exhaled.
"Your mother named someone she trusted to intervene if you became unable or unwilling to protect Zoe.""
Marcus frowned.
"Who?""
The answer came quietly.
"Mrs. Carter.""
Marcus turned toward the older woman.
She looked just as shocked as he was.
"That's impossible," she whispered.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
"There's another condition. If the evidence of financial exploitation is confirmed, Mrs. Carter is authorized to request an independent review of the trust and challenge any transfers made without Zoe's legal consent.""
Marcus stared at the folder.
His mother hadn't simply collected evidence.
She had created a way to protect Zoe even if nobody else listened.
Then Daniel added one final sentence.
"And Marcus, there is something else in that amendment. Eleanor specifically instructed me to investigate whether you had been signing financial documents prepared by Richard without reading them.""
Marcus felt a chill move down his spine.
"What documents?""
"The transfer of the family property. Your brother may have used your signature to authorize something your mother never approved.""
Marcus looked at the front door.
Richard's final threat suddenly made sense.
This wasn't just about Zoe's money.
It was about the entire estate.
And if Richard had forged Marcus's authorization, the next discovery could destroy everything they thought they owned.
May you like
*Daniel's next words confirmed it.*
"Marcus, I need you to come to my office tomorrow. Bring Zoe if possible. There is a document your mother left under seal, and I believe your brother has been trying to find it.""
