Chapter 8: The Woman Who Refused to Stay Silent
At 8:40 the following morning, someone knocked on Marcus's front door.
He had barely slept.
Zoe was still upstairs, resting after an exhausting night. Madison had stayed in her own room, while Lauren had spent most of the night making phone calls.
Marcus had contacted an attorney and arranged to preserve the documents found in the house.
He had also asked the attorney to advise him on immediate steps to protect Zoe and her financial interests.
When he opened the door, a familiar woman stood outside.
Mrs. Carter.
Her hair had turned almost entirely silver, but her warm eyes were unchanged.
She carried a thick brown folder against her chest.
"Mr. Marcus.""
"Mrs. Carter.""
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then she looked past him.
"Is Zoe here?""
"She's upstairs.""
"Is she safe?""
Marcus nodded.
Mrs. Carter closed her eyes briefly.
"Thank God.""
He stepped aside.
"Please come in.""
She entered the house cautiously.
Her gaze moved toward the dining room, where the previous night's dishes had been cleared away.
Then she noticed the metal cash box on the counter.
Her expression tightened.
"So you found it.""
"You knew?""
"Your mother showed me pictures.""
Marcus led her into the study.
"Tell me everything.""
Mrs. Carter placed the folder on the desk.
"I worked in this house for six years. I loved those girls. But after Lauren moved in, things changed.""
Marcus sat down.
"How?""
"At first, it was small things. Zoe would come home from school and ask whether there was anything left to eat. Lauren would tell me not to give her snacks because she was becoming spoiled.""
Mrs. Carter paused.
"I thought it was a disagreement about parenting. I didn't realize how bad it was.""
"What happened next?""
"Lauren began keeping the pantry locked. She said Zoe was taking food without permission.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"How old was she?""
"Eleven.""
He looked down.
Eleven.
His daughter had been eleven years old when she first began hiding crackers in her backpack.
Mrs. Carter continued.
"Madison started taking Zoe's lunch money. Sometimes I gave Zoe a little extra from my own purse, but Lauren found out.""
"What did she do?""
"She accused me of undermining her authority.""
Marcus's voice became cold.
"And then she fired you.""
Mrs. Carter nodded.
"She told you I had stolen jewelry, didn't she?""
Marcus froze.
"She said you resigned after a disagreement.""
Mrs. Carter gave a sad smile.
"I never stole anything. Lauren said she would report me if I told you what was happening.""
Marcus felt sick.
"Why didn't you contact me?""
"I tried.""
She opened the folder.
Inside were copies of emails, photographs, and handwritten notes.
"Here are the messages I sent you. Lauren told me you had replied and asked me to stop interfering.""
Marcus examined them.
None of the replies looked familiar.
He pulled out his phone and searched his old emails.
Nothing.
Then he noticed that the messages had been sent to an unfamiliar address.
One letter was different from his actual email address.
Someone had created an account that looked almost identical to his.
Marcus stared at the screen.
"Richard?""
Mrs. Carter nodded.
"I believe he helped Lauren.""
"Why would my brother do that?""
She opened another document.
"Because of this.""
It was a copy of a financial agreement dated eighteen months earlier.
The document referred to a property Eleanor owned before her death.
Marcus recognized the address immediately.
It was the large house where his mother had lived for nearly thirty years.
"What does this have to do with Zoe?""
Mrs. Carter pointed to a paragraph.
"Your mother wanted the proceeds from the property sale to be placed in a protected educational trust for Zoe. Richard wanted control over the estate administration.""
Marcus read the page.
His mother had left clear instructions.
Richard was not to receive any authority over Zoe's trust.
But the next page contained a handwritten note.
Richard asked me to change the arrangements. I refused.
Marcus looked up.
"Did my mother tell you why?""
Mrs. Carter nodded.
"She said Richard had become obsessed with the money. He believed your mother had given you more than your fair share over the years.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That's ridiculous. We divided everything equally.""
"Your mother told me that too.""
Mrs. Carter reached into the folder and removed a small USB drive.
"She asked me to keep this.""
Marcus stared at it.
"What's on it?""
"Copies of the original financial records. And a recording.""
He looked at her.
"Of what?""
"Richard and Lauren.""
Marcus inserted the drive into his laptop.
A folder appeared.
Several audio files were listed by date.
He opened the first one.
Static filled the room.
Then came Richard's voice.
"Lauren, you need to understand that Zoe's trust is the problem.""
Lauren answered.
"She's a child. She doesn't even know what a trust is.""
"That doesn't matter. Once she becomes an adult, she gets control of the funds.""
"And?""
"And I want the property sale handled before that happens.""
Lauren sighed.
"What if Marcus asks?""
Richard laughed.
"Marcus doesn't read anything. He signs what I put in front of him.""
Marcus stared at the screen.
The recording continued.
Lauren asked, "What about Zoe?""
Richard answered without hesitation.
"Make her difficult. Make her look unstable. If Marcus believes she needs special care, he'll agree to whatever arrangement we suggest.""
Marcus's hands curled into fists.
The recording ended.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the laptop fan.
Mrs. Carter looked at him.
"Your mother found out about their plan. That's why she started collecting evidence.""
Marcus replayed the final section.
Make her difficult.
Make her look unstable.
His daughter had not only been denied food.
Someone had been deliberately building a story around her, hoping to make her appear incapable of managing her own life.
Marcus stood.
"I need to speak to my attorney.""
"There's something else," Mrs. Carter said.
He turned.
"More?""
She reached into the folder and pulled out a photograph.
It showed Richard standing outside a bank beside a woman in a dark coat.
Marcus recognized the woman.
She was the same person Madison had described visiting the house.
"Who is she?""
Mrs. Carter looked uncomfortable.
"Her name is Patricia Mills. She works with a private educational placement agency.""
Marcus stared at the photograph.
"Why was she meeting Richard?""
"Your mother investigated her. Apparently, she had previously worked with Richard on another family estate.""
"What does that mean?""
Mrs. Carter lowered her voice.
"It means your brother may have used the same arrangement before.""
Marcus felt a chill move through him.
Before he could ask another question, footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Zoe appeared at the study door.
She was wearing pajamas and holding the framed photograph of Eleanor.
"Mrs. Carter?""
The older woman immediately stood.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
Zoe ran into her arms.
Mrs. Carter held her tightly.
"I'm so sorry I wasn't here.""
Zoe began crying.
"You didn't leave because you wanted to, did you?""
Mrs. Carter shook her head.
"Never.""
Marcus watched them.
For the first time since the previous evening, Zoe looked like a child who could finally breathe.
But the moment was interrupted by the sound of a car pulling into the driveway.
Marcus glanced through the window.
A black SUV had stopped outside.
Richard stepped out.
He straightened his jacket, checked his reflection in the car window, and walked toward the front door.
Marcus's phone buzzed.
A message from his brother appeared.
*We need to talk. I know Mrs. Carter is there.*
Another message followed.
*And Marcus, whatever she's told you, don't let her give you that folder. Your mother was not the person you think she was.*
Marcus looked at the evidence on his desk.
Then at Zoe.
He finally understood why Richard had come.
May you like
His brother wasn't here to explain.
He was here to stop the truth from getting out.
