Chapter 11: The Secret Eleanor Took to Her Grave
The family property looked exactly as Marcus remembered it.
A long driveway.
Tall oak trees.
A stone fountain Eleanor had insisted on keeping even after it began leaking.
Marcus hadn't visited since the funeral.
Now, as he approached the front entrance with Daniel and an officer accompanying them, he felt an uncomfortable mixture of anger and grief.
Richard was waiting on the front steps.
He looked surprised to see them.
"I specifically asked you to come alone.""
Marcus stopped.
"I don't take instructions from you anymore.""
Richard glanced at Daniel.
"Of course you brought your lawyer.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Richard, we're here to discuss the transfer of the property and the original trust documents.""
Richard laughed.
"You people are obsessed with paperwork.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Where is the original deed?""
"Inside.""
"Then show us.""
Richard hesitated before unlocking the door.
They entered the house.
The smell of old wood and furniture polish brought back memories of Eleanor's Sunday lunches.
Marcus remembered sitting at the dining table while his mother served roast chicken.
He remembered Richard stealing food from his plate.
He remembered Zoe running through the hallway with a coloring book.
Now the house felt cold.
Richard led them into the study.
He opened a drawer and removed a thick folder.
"Here.""
Marcus took it.
The first document was a property transfer agreement.
The second was a financial authorization.
The third was a letter bearing Eleanor's signature.
Marcus read it carefully.
It appeared to authorize Richard to manage the sale of the property.
But Daniel immediately noticed something.
"Where is the original notarial certification?""
Richard shrugged.
"Probably misplaced.""
Daniel examined the signature.
"This isn't sufficient to establish that the transfer was properly authorized.""
Richard laughed.
"Your mother signed it.""
"Then the original documentation should exist.""
"It does.""
"Where?""
Richard pointed toward a cabinet.
Daniel opened it.
Inside were several folders, but no original deed.
Instead, he found a small envelope marked:
*RICHARD — PERSONAL.*
He removed it.
Richard immediately stepped forward.
"That's private.""
Daniel held it away.
"Then why is it stored with the estate documents?""
Marcus opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
It was from Eleanor.
Richard, I know what you did.
Marcus felt his pulse quicken.
He continued.
You have been telling Marcus that I intended to divide the property equally between you. That is not true. I promised you a separate inheritance, and I have kept that promise.
But Zoe's educational trust is not yours to manage.
I know you have been asking Lauren to pressure her into signing documents. Stop immediately.
Marcus looked up.
Richard's face was pale.
"She was confused," he muttered.
Marcus continued reading.
If you continue, I will inform Marcus and the attorney. I will also explain why I changed the original inheritance arrangements.
The letter ended there.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Why did she change them?""
Daniel examined the paper.
"I believe the answer is in the sealed statement.""
He returned to the leather folder and removed another envelope.
This one was addressed to Marcus.
*THE TRUTH ABOUT RICHARD.*
Marcus opened it.
The first page contained a list of dates.
The second contained bank transfers.
The third contained a statement Eleanor had written herself.
Marcus, there is something I have never told you about your brother.
Twenty years ago, Richard borrowed a substantial amount of money from your father. He told us it was for a business investment.
The investment failed. Your father paid the debts to protect him.
Marcus frowned.
He remembered hearing vague stories about Richard's first business.
But he had never known the details.
He continued reading.
Several years later, Richard borrowed money again. This time, he used family property as security without my permission.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"Your mother believed he had accumulated significant private debts.""
Marcus turned toward his brother.
"How much do you owe?""
Richard laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous.""
"How much?""
Richard looked away.
Daniel opened a financial report.
"According to the documents your mother collected, Richard's outstanding liabilities were approaching seven hundred thousand dollars.""
Marcus stared.
"Seven hundred thousand?""
Richard slammed his hand against the desk.
"I was trying to save my business!""
"By stealing from Zoe?""
"I didn't steal anything!""
Daniel interrupted.
"Then you should have no difficulty explaining the transfers.""
Richard turned toward Marcus.
"You don't understand. I had investors waiting. I needed temporary capital.""
"That money belonged to my daughter.""
"She wouldn't even know what to do with it!""
Marcus stepped closer.
"She knew what to do with the crackers she carried because nobody would feed her.""
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
But only for a moment.
Then he said something that made Marcus realize how deeply the betrayal went.
"Your mother always thought Zoe was the future of this family. She left everything to a child who can't even manage her own money.""
Marcus stared at him.
"She's twelve years old.""
"Exactly!""
Richard spread his arms.
"She has no idea how much that property is worth. I could have managed it. I could have invested it. I could have protected the entire estate.""
Daniel calmly replied.
"By transferring the money into your personal accounts?""
Richard glared at him.
Marcus opened another page.
It was a list of payments made to Patricia Mills.
Several transfers were marked as consulting fees.
One was dated just four days before Zoe's school interview.
Marcus looked at Richard.
"Did you pay this woman to prepare a report about my daughter?""
Richard said nothing.
Daniel examined the documents.
"If these payments were intended to influence an assessment of Zoe's welfare, they will require investigation.""
Richard suddenly stood.
"You're all acting like I'm some criminal!""
Marcus looked at him.
"You tried to take my daughter's future.""
"I was protecting the family!""
"From what?""
Richard's voice cracked.
"From being left with nothing!""
Marcus went silent.
Then he understood.
Richard didn't simply want the money.
He believed he deserved it.
He believed his brother had received too much, his mother had favored him, and Zoe represented one final obstacle between Richard and the wealth he thought belonged to him.
Marcus closed the folder.
"You're not getting another dollar.""
Richard looked at him with hatred.
"You'll regret this.""
The officer stepped forward.
"Sir, I need you to remain here while we document these records.""
Richard stared at the officer.
Then he looked toward Marcus.
"You think this is over?""
Marcus didn't answer.
As they left the study, Daniel's phone rang.
He stepped into the hallway.
After a short conversation, he returned looking troubled.
"What happened?"" Marcus asked.
"Mrs. Carter has sent me another file.""
"Another one?""
Daniel nodded.
"It contains a recording from the week Eleanor died.""
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
"What does it say?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Your mother was speaking to Lauren.""
Marcus looked at him.
"About Zoe?""
"Yes.""
Daniel opened the audio file.
Eleanor's voice came through the speaker.
"Lauren, I know Richard is pressuring you. But you don't have to do what he asks.""
Lauren answered.
"You don't understand. He promised he would help me.""
"Help you with what?""
There was a long pause.
Then Lauren spoke.
"I have debts too.""
Marcus froze.
Eleanor continued.
"How much?""
Lauren began crying.
"Enough that I can't walk away.""
The recording ended.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Lauren has debts?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your mother apparently discovered that Lauren had been receiving money from Richard. She believed Lauren had become financially dependent on him.""
Marcus remembered the expensive clothes, the new furniture, the car.
All things he had believed were paid for through ordinary household finances.
He felt sick.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
"There is another file.""
He opened it.
This time, the recording contained Eleanor's voice alone.
It sounded weaker than before.
Marcus, if you ever hear this, I need you to know that Lauren didn't enter your life by accident.
Marcus stopped breathing.
He looked at Daniel.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel pressed play again.
Eleanor continued.
She already knew about the inheritance before you introduced her to us. Richard told her about the property, the trust, and the money I intended to leave for Zoe.
Marcus felt the floor shift beneath him.
His mother had suspected that Lauren's relationship with him had been built around money.
The recording continued.
I didn't tell you because I wanted to be wrong. I wanted to believe she loved you.
Marcus stared at the speaker.
Then Eleanor said the final words.
But I found something in Richard's old files. Something that connects Lauren to the family long before you ever met her.
The recording stopped.
Marcus slowly looked toward Daniel.
"Do you know what she found?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not yet.""
Then he pointed to the final folder.
A photograph had slipped halfway out.
Marcus pulled it free.
It showed a younger Lauren standing beside a man outside a courthouse.
The date was written on the back.
May you like
*TWELVE YEARS BEFORE MARCUS AND LAUREN MET.*
And the man standing beside her was Marcus's late father.
