Chapter 13: The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed

Marcus read the name again.

*Evelyn Bennett.*

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

His father had been dead for years. His mother had never mentioned another child. And yet, according to the document Lauren had hidden in her suitcase, there was a woman who might have been Marcus's half-sister.

Daniel took the photograph from him.

"Don't jump to conclusions. This is an investigative document, not proof of paternity.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Why would Lauren have it?""

"That's what we need to establish.""

Mrs. Carter called again.

Marcus answered immediately.

"Where is Zoe?""

"She's safe. Madison is with her.""

"Did Lauren take the original letter?""

"Yes. She left with a suitcase about twenty minutes ago.""

"Did she say where she was going?""

"She mentioned visiting someone named Evelyn.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Did you hear an address?""

"Unfortunately, no. But there's something else.""

"What?""

"Zoe found another envelope underneath Lauren's mattress. I didn't open it. I thought you should see it first.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"We're coming home.""

Twenty minutes later, Marcus entered his bedroom.

Zoe was sitting on the sofa beside Madison. Mrs. Carter stood near the doorway, holding a small cream-colored envelope.

Zoe immediately stood.

"Dad!""

Marcus hugged her.

"Are you okay?""

She nodded.

"Madison said Mom left.""

"She did.""

"Is she coming back?""

Marcus considered his answer.

"We're going to make sure you don't have to be afraid of anyone.""

Zoe looked down.

"Okay.""

Mrs. Carter handed him the envelope.

"Lauren hid this behind the bottom drawer.""

Marcus opened it.

Inside were several photocopied documents.

The first was an old birth certificate.

The second was a letter from a private investigator.

The third was a handwritten note.

Evelyn Bennett. Born March 18. Mother: Patricia Bennett. Father listed as unknown.

Marcus studied the date.

He was born in November.

Evelyn was only eight months older.

The investigator's letter contained a summary of financial transfers made to Patricia Bennett decades earlier.

Several payments had come from an account belonging to Marcus's father.

Marcus sat down.

"Why would Dad pay this woman?""

Daniel examined the papers.

"Possibly child support. But we need the original records.""

Madison suddenly spoke.

"Mom told me about Evelyn once.""

Marcus looked up.

"When?""

"Last summer. She was on the phone with Uncle Richard. She said Evelyn was the person who could help them if Grandma's trust became a problem.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did she say how?""

Madison shook her head.

"She said Evelyn had a right to part of the family estate.""

Marcus stared at the birth certificate.

"If she's my father's daughter, she may have inheritance rights.""

"That depends on the circumstances and applicable law," Daniel explained.

"But someone could certainly use the possibility of another heir to complicate the estate.""

Marcus looked at the investigator's letter.

There was a telephone number at the bottom.

He called it.

A woman answered after four rings.

"Hello?""

"Is this Evelyn Bennett?""

A pause.

"Who's asking?""

"My name is Marcus Hale. I believe we may have the same father.""

Silence.

Then a quiet laugh.

"Well. I wondered when someone from your family would finally call.""

Marcus gripped the phone.

"You know who I am?""

"I've known your name for years.""

"Did you know my father?""

"Not really.""

"What does that mean?""

Evelyn exhaled.

"My mother told me he was married and already had a son. She said he promised to help us, but he disappeared whenever things became difficult.""

Marcus stared at the wall.

"My father wasn't a perfect man.""

"No," Evelyn replied.

"But he wasn't the monster your family made him out to be either.""

Marcus frowned.

"What do you know about Lauren?""

Evelyn went quiet.

Then she asked, "Is she with you?""

"No. She left this morning.""

"Good. Because she's been trying to reach me for months.""

"Why?""

"She wanted me to sign something.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"What?""

"A statement claiming that your father had promised me a portion of his estate.""

Daniel immediately began taking notes.

"Did you sign it?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

Evelyn laughed without humor.

"Because the amount she offered me was more than I'd earned in five years, and the document wasn't even legally sound.""

Marcus felt a chill.

"How much did she offer?""

"Fifty thousand dollars.""

Daniel looked up sharply.

Marcus continued.

"Did she explain why?""

"She said it would help me establish my rightful place in the family. But when I asked why she needed the statement so urgently, she told me your grandmother had hidden assets that belonged to me.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

His mother had suspected exactly this.

"Did she mention Zoe?""

Evelyn's voice softened.

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

"She said your daughter was receiving money that should have belonged to me.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

There it was.

Another attempt to turn someone against Zoe.

He spoke carefully.

"Evelyn, I don't know what Lauren told you, but Zoe has been through a terrible situation. Her money was taken, and someone tried to remove her from my care.""

Evelyn was silent.

Then she said something unexpected.

"Your daughter isn't responsible for what happened between our parents.""

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

"Thank you.""

"I'd like to meet her.""

Marcus glanced at Zoe.

"Perhaps we can arrange that.""

Evelyn hesitated.

"Marcus, there's something you should know about your father.""

"What?""

"Before he died, he came to see my mother. He brought documents proving he had acknowledged me privately. He wanted to include me in his estate.""

Marcus stared.

"Why didn't I know?""

"Because Richard visited us afterward.""

Marcus's blood ran cold.

"What did he say?""

"He told my mother that if she tried to make any claim, she'd lose everything. He said your father had left no valid documents.""

Daniel leaned closer to the phone.

"Do you still have those documents?""

"Yes.""

"Would you be willing to provide copies?""

"Only if I can meet Marcus first.""

Marcus agreed.

After ending the call, Daniel sat quietly for a moment.

Then he said, "This could explain why Richard was so desperate to control the estate records.""

Mrs. Carter looked at him.

"Your mother knew?""

Daniel nodded.

"She had discovered a reference to another potential beneficiary. But she never found the original acknowledgment.""

Marcus stared at the papers.

"So Richard may have hidden my father's documents, Lauren tried to use Evelyn, and both of them wanted control of Zoe's trust.""

"That's one possibility," Daniel said.

"We need to verify it.""

Madison lowered her head.

"I think Mom wanted Evelyn to claim money so she could use the dispute to freeze Zoe's trust.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"That would explain the timing.""

Zoe had been listening quietly.

Finally, she spoke.

"Does Evelyn hate me?""

Marcus immediately turned.

"No, sweetheart.""

"Will she take Grandma's money?""

"Nobody is taking anything from you without a proper legal process.""

Zoe looked at the documents.

Then she asked:

"Can I meet her?""

Marcus smiled faintly.

"If she wants to meet you, yes.""

That evening, Evelyn agreed to visit.

She arrived at seven wearing a dark blue coat and carrying a worn leather folder.

When she saw Marcus, she stopped.

"You look like him.""

Marcus felt something tighten in his chest.

"So I've been told.""

Evelyn opened the folder.

Inside was an old photograph of their father holding a newborn baby.

On the back, he had written:

To my daughter, Evelyn. I hope one day we can have the life we should have had.

Marcus stared at the handwriting.

He recognized it.

It was unmistakably his father's.

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

"I didn't come here to take anything from your daughter. I just wanted the truth.""

Marcus nodded.

"Then perhaps we're looking for the same thing.""

Evelyn handed Daniel another document.

It was a signed declaration from their father, dated six months before his death.

The document acknowledged Evelyn as his biological daughter and included instructions to establish a separate financial provision for her.

Daniel examined it carefully.

"This could be significant.""

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

"Did Lauren know about this?""

"Yes. She showed me a different version of the document. One that said your father wanted me to receive everything.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Everything?""

Evelyn nodded.

"She said your mother had hidden my inheritance and that I needed to act before the money was transferred permanently.""

Marcus looked at the original declaration.

His father had intended to provide for both children.

Not one at the expense of the other.

Not by taking from Zoe.

By making separate arrangements.

Daniel placed the document inside a protective sleeve.

"Now we have a much clearer picture.""

But Evelyn wasn't finished.

She reached into her folder and removed one final item.

A photograph of Lauren sitting beside Richard in a restaurant.

On the table between them was a document.

Evelyn pointed to it.

"This was taken the day Lauren offered me the money.""

Marcus looked closely.

The document's title was visible.

*DECLARATION OF CLAIM AGAINST THE HALE FAMILY ESTATE.*

And beneath it was Richard's signature.

Evelyn whispered:

"They wanted me to sign this so they could challenge Zoe's inheritance.""

Marcus looked at the photograph.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"How do we stop them?""

Daniel's answer was immediate.

"By proving what they planned before they have another opportunity to carry it out.""

For the first time, Marcus felt the pieces beginning to fit together.

But one person was still missing.

Lauren.

May you like

And she had taken Eleanor's original letter.

The letter containing the evidence that could connect every part of the scheme.
