Calm

Chapter 14: The Final Lie

Lauren returned the following afternoon.

She didn't come alone.

Richard was with her.

And between them was a woman Marcus recognized from the photograph.

Patricia Mills.

The educational placement consultant.

Marcus opened the front door but didn't invite them inside.

"What do you want?""

Lauren lifted her chin.

"We need to settle this.""

Richard stepped forward.

"You've made enough trouble already.""

Marcus almost laughed.

"Interesting choice of words.""

Patricia held up a folder.

"I believe we can resolve some misunderstandings involving Zoe's educational and residential arrangements.""

Marcus stared at her.

"You interviewed my daughter without my consent.""

Patricia adjusted her glasses.

"I was conducting a preliminary welfare assessment.""

"Who authorized it?""

Lauren answered quickly.

"I did.""

"You're not Zoe's legal guardian.""

"I'm her stepmother.""

"That doesn't give you authority to arrange her removal.""

Patricia opened the folder.

"Mr. Hale, I think you should review the assessment before making accusations.""

Marcus took the document.

The first page described Zoe as withdrawn, emotionally unstable, and increasingly resistant to household rules.

The second claimed she had demonstrated aggressive behavior toward Madison.

The third recommended a temporary residential placement.

Marcus's hands tightened.

"This is false.""

Patricia remained calm.

"These are observations gathered from the family.""

"Did you speak to Zoe's teachers?""

"No.""

"Her doctor?""

"No.""

"Her school counselor?""

Patricia hesitated.

"Not yet.""

"Then what exactly did you observe?""

Lauren interrupted.

"She has been difficult for months!""

Marcus looked at her.

"Because she was hungry?""

Lauren's expression hardened.

"Don't twist this.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Marcus, you're making an emotional decision. You need to think about Zoe's future.""

Marcus placed the report on a nearby table.

"My daughter's future is not your business.""

Richard lowered his voice.

"Then perhaps you should think about the consequences of ignoring the estate documents.""

Daniel appeared behind Marcus.

"Good afternoon, Richard.""

Richard's expression darkened.

"Of course. The lawyer.""

Daniel stepped into the doorway.

"Since you brought Patricia, I assume you are prepared to explain why she received payments from accounts connected to the disputed trust.""

Patricia's composure faltered.

"What payments?""

Daniel opened his folder.

"Three transfers totaling fourteen thousand dollars, described as consulting fees.""

Richard shook his head.

"Those were legitimate services.""

"Then you won't mind providing the invoices.""

Richard said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"We also have recordings in which you discuss making Zoe appear unstable so that a residential placement could be justified.""

Patricia looked at Lauren.

"What recordings?""

Lauren's face went pale.

Marcus watched the exchange.

For the first time, Patricia seemed to understand that she might have been brought into something much bigger than an ordinary family dispute.

She closed her folder.

"I was informed that the family had concerns about Zoe's behavior.""

Daniel nodded.

"Then I suggest you provide a full account of who instructed you and what information you received.""

Richard snapped.

"Don't answer him.""

Patricia looked at him.

"Richard, you told me everything was authorized.""

"Because it was.""

"Where is the signed consent?""

Richard glared.

Patricia stepped away from him.

Marcus looked at Lauren.

"Where's my mother's original letter?""

Lauren clutched her handbag.

"I don't have it.""

"Mrs. Carter saw you take it.""

"She misunderstood.""

Daniel spoke firmly.

"Lauren, if you possess documents belonging to Eleanor's estate, you need to return them.""

Lauren's voice rose.

"I don't owe any of you anything!""

Marcus looked at her.

"You owe my daughter an explanation.""

Lauren laughed bitterly.

"Your daughter? You mean the girl who has spent years making everyone miserable?""

Zoe appeared at the top of the stairs.

Marcus turned immediately.

"Sweetheart, go back to your room.""

But Zoe didn't move.

She looked directly at Lauren.

"Why did you hate me?""

The question silenced everyone.

Lauren stared at her.

"I never hated you.""

"Then why wouldn't you let me eat?""

Lauren opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Zoe continued.

"Why did you take Grandma's money?""

Lauren's eyes filled.

"Because you don't understand what it takes to run a household!""

"Why did you lock me in the room?""

"Because you needed discipline!""

Zoe's voice trembled.

"I was nine.""

Lauren looked away.

Marcus stepped forward.

"That's enough.""

But Zoe wasn't finished.

She came down the stairs, holding Eleanor's photograph.

"Grandma said I should always tell the truth, even when people are angry.""

She looked at Lauren.

"I didn't steal food. I didn't steal money. I didn't do anything to deserve what you did.""

Madison appeared behind her.

She had been standing on the landing, listening.

Then she walked down.

"I know.""

Lauren turned.

"Madison, don't.""

Madison looked at Zoe.

"I'm sorry.""

Zoe stared at her.

Madison wiped her cheeks.

"I laughed when you were hungry. I took your lunch money. I knew Mom was hiding food from you, and I helped her because I wanted her to like me.""

Her voice broke.

"I was wrong.""

Zoe didn't respond.

Madison nodded.

"I know you don't have to forgive me.""

Lauren looked furious.

"After everything I've done for you?""

Madison turned toward her mother.

"You told me Zoe was stealing from us. You said she was trying to destroy our family.""

Lauren's eyes narrowed.

"Because she was!""

"No. You were.""

The words landed heavily.

Richard stepped forward.

"Enough of this nonsense. We're leaving.""

Daniel moved toward the door.

"Not before we discuss the missing documents.""

Richard pushed past him.

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

"Don't touch him.""

Richard glared.

"You think you've won?""

Marcus looked directly into his eyes.

"No. I think I've finally stopped losing.""

Then Patricia placed her folder on the table.

"I need to make a statement.""

Richard spun around.

"What?""

Patricia took a breath.

"I was given incomplete information about Zoe's circumstances. I was told her father had agreed to a temporary placement.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Did I?""

"No.""

"Did you verify that?""

Patricia shook her head.

"No.""

Daniel nodded.

"Please provide the full details to my office.""

Patricia agreed.

Richard turned toward Lauren.

"You told me she had the paperwork!""

Lauren began crying.

"You said everything was arranged!""

Marcus watched them.

They were no longer behaving like a united couple.

They were blaming each other.

And that was when Daniel received a call.

He listened carefully.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"We found the original letter.""

Marcus froze.

"Where?""

"At the bank. Eleanor had deposited a sealed copy with instructions that it be released if the original went missing.""

Richard's face drained of color.

Daniel ended the call.

He turned toward Lauren.

"There's something else you should know. The bank also preserved the withdrawal request you submitted yesterday.""

Lauren whispered, "No.""

Daniel continued.

"The account has been frozen pending investigation. Every attempted transfer is documented.""

Richard took a step backward.

"That's not possible.""

Marcus looked at his brother.

"You really thought you could take everything?""

Richard's expression became desperate.

"Marcus, listen. We can fix this.""

"No.""

"I'll return the money.""

"You should have thought of that before.""

Richard lowered his voice.

"There's one thing you don't know.""

Marcus stared.

"What?""

Richard glanced toward Zoe.

Then he said:

"Your mother didn't leave all the money to Zoe.""

Daniel looked sharply at him.

"That's correct. She left a separate inheritance for you, Richard, which you already received.""

Richard shook his head.

"Not all of it.""

Daniel frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Richard looked at Marcus.

"There's another account. One that Eleanor never disclosed.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"Where?""

Richard smiled weakly.

"Ask Lauren.""

Everyone turned.

Lauren's face had gone completely white.

Marcus approached her.

"What account?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Richard laughed.

"Stop lying. You helped me open it.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Lauren, if there is another account, you need to disclose it.""

Lauren began trembling.

Then she looked at Zoe.

For the first time, her expression wasn't angry.

It was terrified.

"Your grandmother left something for you," she whispered.

Zoe looked confused.

"What?""

Lauren swallowed.

"Something she never told your father about.""

Marcus stared at her.

"What did she leave?""

Lauren reached into her handbag.

She pulled out a small key.

It was old, brass, and attached to a paper tag.

On the tag was a handwritten number.

*317.*

Daniel recognized it immediately.

He looked at Marcus.

"That's a private safety deposit box.""

Marcus frowned.

"Where?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"At the bank where Eleanor kept her original estate records.""

Lauren held the key tightly.

"She told me where it was.""

Marcus stared.

"Why didn't you say anything?""

Lauren looked at Zoe.

"Because I thought I could use it to protect myself.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"What's inside?""

Lauren began crying.

May you like

Then she answered.

"Everything.""
