Calm

Chapter 7: The Enemy Inside The Empire

Adrian Cross had spent his entire life building things.

A company.

A reputation.

A family.

He believed anything worth having was built through patience, discipline, and trust.

But now he understood something he had never wanted to accept.

Trust could be the most dangerous investment a person ever made.

Because when trust collapsed, it did not leave a small crack.

It destroyed the entire foundation.

The next morning, Adrian stood in the headquarters of Cross Technologies, looking down from the executive floor at thousands of employees moving through the building.

For years, this place had represented everything he had fought for.

A company started from nothing.

A dream created with his own hands.

Now someone had been slowly reaching inside it.

Stealing information.

Planning a takeover.

Waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

And the person behind it had been standing closer than anyone.

Adrian turned away from the window.

“Everyone is here?””

Daniel nodded.

“The board members. Legal team. Security department.””

“And Marcus?””

Daniel looked serious.

“Not yet.””

Adrian walked toward the conference room.

“Good.””

Inside, the atmosphere was tense.

Everyone knew something was wrong.

Adrian was not a man who called emergency meetings without a reason.

He sat at the head of the table.

On the screen behind him were documents.

Financial transfers.

Communication records.

Confidential files.

No one spoke.

Finally, Adrian began.

“For the past two years, someone inside this company has been leaking information.””

A wave of shocked expressions moved around the room.

Adrian continued.

“The person responsible had access to private documents, investor plans, and future strategies.””

One board member frowned.

“Do we know who?””

Adrian looked at the screen.

“We know who received the information.””

A new document appeared.

Marcus Vale.

The room changed instantly.

Marcus was not just another investor.

He was respected in financial circles.

A man known for buying struggling companies and turning them into profitable businesses.

Some people admired him.

Others feared him.

But nobody expected his name here.

“He was working with Vanessa,” Adrian said.

The room became silent.

“Your wife?””

“Yes.””

The word felt strange.

Even now.

After everything.

Adrian continued.

“She entered my life with a purpose.””

One executive shook his head.

“Are you saying the marriage was part of a corporate takeover?””

“Yes.””

Several people exchanged uncomfortable looks.

The legal director opened a folder.

“If this is true, we need to act carefully.””

“I know.””

“Marcus will deny everything.””

“I know.””

“He may claim the information came from Vanessa without his knowledge.””

Adrian looked at him.

“He won’t get the chance to control the story.””

The legal director studied him.

“What do you mean?””

Adrian pressed a button.

A recording appeared.

Marcus’s voice filled the room.

*Once you become Mrs. Cross, everything belongs to us.*

Nobody moved.

The evidence was clear.

The meeting continued for nearly two hours.

Security access was revoked.

Financial accounts were frozen.

Legal actions were prepared.

But Adrian knew something.

This was not the end.

It was the beginning.

Because people like Marcus did not spend years planning something just to surrender when exposed.

At noon, Adrian received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Mr. Cross?””

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Confident.

“Marcus.””

Adrian looked out the office window.

“You finally decided to call.””

“I heard you had an interesting morning.””

“I imagine you hear everything.””

A quiet laugh.

“You always were difficult to surprise.””

“And you always were good at pretending.””

A pause.

“I assume Vanessa told you things.””

“She told me enough.””

“Did she?””

Adrian remained silent.

Marcus continued.

“Vanessa was never the person you thought she was.””

Adrian almost laughed.

“You’re telling me this?””

“I’m telling you that you don’t know the entire story.””

“You expect me to believe you?””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“I expect you to understand that Vanessa made choices.””

Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.

“You manipulated her.””

“She allowed herself to be manipulated.””

“That doesn’t excuse anything.””

“I didn’t say it did.””

The answer surprised Adrian.

Marcus continued.

“You think I’m the villain because it’s easier.””

Adrian looked toward the city.

“I don’t need to decide what you are.””

“No?””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“Your actions already did that.””

Silence.

Then Marcus spoke again.

“You should ask yourself something.””

“What?””

“Why did Vanessa become that person after meeting you?””

Adrian frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“You believe you rescued her.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“But maybe you only gave her a better place to hide.””

The call ended.

Adrian stared at the phone.

The words bothered him.

Not because he believed Marcus.

Because he wondered why Marcus wanted him to think about it.

Manipulation often contained pieces of truth.

And Adrian needed to know which pieces mattered.

That evening, Adrian returned home early.

The mansion felt different now.

Not safer.

Just quieter.

Security guards were everywhere.

New cameras had been installed.

Every door was monitored.

But Adrian knew technology could not protect a family from the wrong people.

He went upstairs.

Lily was sitting on the floor drawing.

Noah played beside her.

When they saw him, both children ran toward him.

For the first time in days, Adrian smiled naturally.

“Daddy!””

He picked them up.

“Hey, you two.””

Lily looked at him.

“Are we staying here?””

“Yes.””

“Even though Vanessa isn’t here?””

“Yes.””

She looked relieved.

Then she asked:

“Is someone else going to hurt us?””

The question stopped him.

Adrian knelt.

“No.””

“But Vanessa said…”

He froze.

“What did she say?””

Lily looked nervous.

“She said Daddy has enemies.””

Adrian sat beside her.

“Everyone has problems sometimes.””

“But are they going to come here?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

And he made a promise.

“No one gets near you without going through me first.””

She believed him.

That was the hardest part.

Children trusted completely.

Adults earned trust slowly.

Adrian had given his too easily.

Later that night, Daniel arrived with unexpected news.

“We found another account.””

Adrian looked up.

“What account?””

“Not Vanessa’s.””

“Marcus?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He placed a file on the table.

“This belongs to someone else.””

Adrian opened it.

Then stopped.

The account holder’s name appeared.

*Ethan Cross.*

For several seconds, Adrian said nothing.

“No.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I verified it three times.””

“That’s impossible.””

“The transfers are real.””

“How much?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Almost five hundred thousand dollars.””

Adrian stared at the documents.

His brother.

Again.

Another betrayal.

But this time, something felt different.

Ethan had helped him.

He had warned him.

He had given him evidence.

Why would he secretly receive money from Marcus?

Unless…

Unless there was another explanation.

Adrian immediately called Ethan.

No answer.

He called again.

Still nothing.

A message appeared.

*The number you are calling is unavailable.*

A cold feeling moved through him.

“Find him.””

Daniel nodded.

“We already started.””

“How long?””

“We’re trying.””

“No.””

Adrian grabbed his jacket.

“I’m going myself.””

Ethan’s apartment was empty.

The door was unlocked.

That alone worried Adrian.

Inside, everything looked normal.

Almost too normal.

A coffee cup on the table.

A jacket hanging by the door.

A book open on the couch.

Like someone had just left.

But Ethan was gone.

Adrian searched the room.

Then he found something.

A hidden envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Adrian read the first line.

*Adrian, if you found this, it means they know I was trying to help you.*

His heart tightened.

He continued.

*I should have told you everything years ago. I was afraid.*

Another page.

*Marcus forced me into this situation.*

Adrian stopped.

Forced?

He kept reading.

*The money was not payment. It was blackmail.*

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Then came the final sentence.

*Vanessa was not the only person Marcus controlled.*

The room suddenly felt colder.

Because Adrian realized something.

He had spent days searching for the person who betrayed him.

But maybe he should have been searching for the people Marcus had trapped.

His phone rang.

Daniel.

Adrian answered immediately.

“We found Ethan.””

“Where?””

Daniel’s voice was urgent.

“At the old Cross warehouse.””

Adrian frowned.

“The one we closed years ago?””

“Yes.””

“Is he okay?””

A pause.

“Adrian…”

His heart sank.

“What?””

“There’s something you need to see.””

The old warehouse had been abandoned for years.

It was where Adrian and Ethan first stored equipment when they started their company.

A place full of memories.

A place where they built their dream.

Now police lights surrounded it.

Adrian stepped inside.

And saw Ethan sitting on the floor.

Alive.

But injured.

“Ethan.””

His brother looked up.

Relief crossed his face.

“You came.””

Adrian rushed toward him.

“What happened?””

Ethan looked exhausted.

“Marcus found out I was helping you.””

“Who did this?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Someone you never suspected.””

Adrian froze.

“Who?””

Ethan looked toward the darkness behind him.

And said the words Adrian never expected to hear.

“Your own security chief.””

The same moment, Adrian’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From Marcus.

*You’re finally close to the truth. Unfortunately, you’re too late.*

Adrian stared at the screen.

Because he suddenly understood.

May you like

The enemy had never been outside the walls.

They had been guarding the walls all along.
