Chapter 5: The Identity She Buried For Years
The report arrived at 6:42 in the morning.
Adrian Cross had not slept.
Not because he was working.
Because every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same image.
Lily’s terrified face.
Noah crying inside the old wooden doghouse.
The metal latch locking into place.
A father was supposed to recognize when his children needed him.
And Adrian had failed.
The guilt was heavier than exhaustion.
He sat in his office, the curtains still closed, while the private investigator’s file rested on his desk.
A thick envelope.
A lifetime of secrets.
His hands remained still for several seconds before he finally opened it.
The first page was simple.
*Subject: Vanessa Marie Cross*
But below the name were details Adrian had never seen.
A different name.
A different history.
A different person.
Adrian read slowly.
Then he stopped.
*Former legal name: Vanessa Marie Holloway.*
The name meant nothing at first.
Then the next line appeared.
*Changed identity five years ago.*
Adrian leaned back.
Five years.
That was the year before he met her.
Before the charity event.
Before the wedding.
Before she entered his children’s lives.
He continued reading.
And every paragraph made the woman he knew disappear further.
Vanessa had not grown up wealthy.
She had not come from the elegant family she always described.
The expensive vacations.
The private schools.
The family business.
None of it existed.
Instead, she had grown up in a small town several states away.
Her father had been involved in financial crimes.
Her family had lost everything.
Vanessa had spent years moving from place to place, changing jobs, changing appearances, changing stories.
Adrian frowned.
That alone did not make her dangerous.
A person’s past did not define them.
He knew that better than anyone.
But then he reached the section that changed everything.
*Connection to Marcus Vale: Confirmed.*
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
He kept reading.
Vanessa and Marcus had known each other long before Adrian met her.
Not as strangers.
Not through business.
Personally.
They had attended the same private events.
Shared financial contacts.
Traveled together.
The investigator had found photographs.
Dozens.
Some recent.
Some from years ago.
Adrian felt something twist inside him.
Because Vanessa had told him she barely knew Marcus.
She had called him “just another businessman.””
Another lie.
He turned the page.
Then he saw the date.
The first time Vanessa met Adrian.
It was not random.
The investigator had discovered that Vanessa attended the charity event specifically because Adrian would be there.
She had known his schedule.
She had known his company’s value.
She had known about his children.
Adrian stared at the document.
“No…”
The word escaped quietly.
He kept reading.
The report explained that Vanessa had researched Adrian for months before their first meeting.
His wealth.
His family situation.
His public image.
Everything.
She had not found him.
She had selected him.
A cold silence filled the office.
For years, Adrian had believed he had met someone who brought happiness into his life after losing his first wife.
Someone who understood his pain.
Someone who helped him rebuild.
Now he wondered if the entire relationship had been carefully designed.
His phone rang.
It was Ethan.
Adrian looked at the screen.
For a moment, he almost ignored it.
But he answered.
“Where are you?””
Ethan sounded tired.
“At home.””
“I need to ask you something.””
“About Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“What did you know before I married her?””
Ethan was silent.
Too long.
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Ethan.””
“I knew she had a connection to Marcus.””
The words landed heavily.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know the details.””
“But you knew.””
“Yes.””
Adrian stood.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought it wasn’t my place.””
“That’s your answer?””
“No.””
Ethan’s voice became quieter.
“I thought you were happy.””
Adrian looked at the family photograph on his desk.
Happy.
That word felt painful now.
“You thought happiness was more important than the truth?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Ethan sighed.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Adrian laughed softly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“What?””
“Everyone says they were protecting me.””
His voice hardened.
“But nobody protected my children.””
The silence afterward was painful.
Ethan had no response.
Because there was none.
After ending the call, Adrian continued reading.
The investigator had discovered another connection.
A woman named Clara Bennett.
Former employee.
Former nanny.
Adrian recognized the name.
Clara had worked for them briefly two years earlier.
Then suddenly disappeared.
Vanessa told him Clara stole money.
Adrian remembered firing her without questioning.
Another mistake.
He immediately contacted the investigator.
“Find Clara Bennett.””
“She may not want to speak.””
“Find her anyway.””
Three hours later, Adrian received an address.
A small apartment on the other side of the city.
He drove there alone.
No security.
No assistant.
No warning.
Because he needed the truth from someone who had nothing left to lose.
Clara opened the door after several knocks.
The moment she saw Adrian, her expression changed.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“Mr. Cross?””
“Yes.””
She stepped back.
“What do you want?””
“I need to talk about Vanessa.””
Clara immediately looked away.
“I don’t know anything.””
“You do.””
“No.””
“Clara.””
Her hands tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She stared at him.
“You think she just became cruel?””
Adrian said nothing.
Clara looked down.
“She was always watching.””
“Watching what?””
“Your children.””
A cold feeling moved through him.
“Explain.””
“When I worked there, Vanessa asked strange questions.””
“What kind?””
“About your schedule.””
Adrian frowned.
“Everyone knew my schedule.””
“Not like this.””
Clara swallowed.
“She wanted to know when you would be away. When meetings lasted late. When you traveled.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“You must have suspected.””
Clara looked at him.
“I suspected she wanted control.””
The word stayed in the air.
Control.
“Did she hurt Lily and Noah?””
Clara became quiet.
Then she whispered:
“Not like what happened in the doghouse.””
Adrian’s heart tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“She hurt them in other ways.””
His expression changed.
“Tell me.””
Clara wiped her eyes.
“Lily used to hide whenever Vanessa walked into the room.””
Adrian looked away.
“She told me Vanessa would whisper things.””
“What things?””
“That nobody would believe her.””
The same sentence.
Again.
Vanessa’s weapon.
Making children afraid to speak.
“What else?””
Clara hesitated.
“She told Lily that if she ever caused problems, her father would get tired of her.””
Adrian felt like the air disappeared.
No child should hear that.
Especially not from someone who claimed to love them.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Clara looked ashamed.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Several times.””
“And?””
“Vanessa always got there first.””
Adrian remembered.
Every time an employee had concerns, Vanessa had an explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A complaint.
A jealousy issue.
And Adrian had believed her.
“I’m sorry,” Clara whispered.
Adrian looked at her.
“For what?””
“For leaving.””
The answer surprised him.
“I was scared.””
He nodded slowly.
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
Clara looked directly at him.
“She made sure everyone was scared.””
Adrian felt a chill.
“How?””
“She had information.””
“What information?””
“Personal information.””
Clara lowered her voice.
“She knew things about people before they told her.””
Adrian immediately thought of Marcus.
Connections.
Money.
Influence.
Vanessa had not operated alone.
Before leaving, Clara stopped him.
“Mr. Cross.””
He turned.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
“The night before she married you…”
Clara hesitated.
“I saw her with Marcus.””
Adrian froze.
“Where?””
“Outside the church.””
His face changed.
“She was crying.””
“Crying?””
“Yes.””
“What did Marcus say?””
Clara looked frightened.
“I only heard one sentence.””
Adrian waited.
“He said, ‘After tomorrow, you’ll have everything you wanted.’”
The drive back to the mansion felt longer than ever.
Because Adrian finally understood.
The marriage.
The kindness.
The perfect timing.
The perfect image.
It had all been part of a plan.
But one question remained.
What exactly did Vanessa want?
Money?
Power?
His company?
Or something much more personal?
When Adrian returned home, Daniel was waiting.
His expression was serious.
“We found something else.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel handed him a tablet.
“An old security file.””
“From when?””
“The week before your wedding.””
Adrian opened it.
The footage loaded.
A parking lot.
A dark car.
Vanessa standing beside Marcus.
Talking.
Then Marcus handed her a folder.
Adrian increased the volume.
The audio was weak.
But one sentence was clear.
Marcus’s voice.
“Once you become Mrs. Cross, everything belongs to us.””
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then the footage continued.
Vanessa smiled.
Not nervously.
Not sadly.
Confidently.
Like someone who believed the future was already written.
And in that moment, Adrian knew.
The woman who locked his children away had not entered his family by accident.
She had entered with a mission.
May you like
And now he needed to find out what she planned to take from him.
Before she could take anything else.
