Chapter 2: The Secret Files Hidden In The Shadows
Adrian Cross had spent his entire adult life believing that the truth was something you could always find if you looked hard enough.
In business, numbers exposed lies.
In negotiations, people revealed themselves through pressure.
In life, he believed actions always spoke louder than words.
But sitting alone in his dark office that night, surrounded by security reports and unanswered questions, Adrian realized there was one place where he had failed to see the truth.
His own home.
The room was silent except for the quiet hum of the computer.
On the screen were security records from the past six months.
At first, everything looked normal.
Daily routines.
Employees entering and leaving.
Garden maintenance.
Deliveries.
Nothing unusual.
Then Adrian noticed something.
A pattern.
Small things.
The kind of things most people would ignore.
A nanny leaving earlier than scheduled.
A housekeeper requesting transfers.
A gardener suddenly asking for vacation.
A security employee resigning without explanation.
Individually, each event seemed meaningless.
Together, they told a different story.
Adrian leaned closer.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
The question remained unanswered.
Because deep down, he already knew.
People had tried.
They had hinted.
They had warned him in small ways.
But Vanessa had always been one step ahead.
She was charming when she needed to be.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Convincing.
She knew exactly how to make herself appear like the victim.
And Adrian had believed her.
He had been so focused on building a future for his children that he had failed to notice someone was damaging their present.
His phone vibrated.
He looked down.
A message from Daniel, the director of the private security company that managed the mansion systems.
*Daniel: I need to speak with you privately. There is something else you should know.*
Adrian stared at the message.
He immediately called.
Daniel answered after one ring.
“Adrian.””
“Tell me.””
There was a pause.
A long one.
That alone worried Adrian.
Daniel was not a man who hesitated.
“What happened?””
“I reviewed the backup files after you accessed them.””
“And?””
“The footage you saw today wasn’t the only file Vanessa tried to delete.””
Adrian stood.
“What else?””
“Several recordings over the last few months were manually removed from the main system.””
Adrian walked toward the window.
Below him, the mansion grounds stretched into darkness.
The same garden where his children had been locked away.
“How many?””
“Seven.””
His hand tightened around the phone.
“Dates?””
Daniel read them slowly.
The first two were days Adrian had been traveling for work.
The third was a weekend he remembered clearly.
Vanessa had told him Lily had been sick and needed rest.
The fourth was a day Noah had fallen and bruised his arm.
Vanessa claimed he had slipped near the stairs.
Adrian suddenly remembered.
She had refused to let him speak with the doctor alone.
At the time, he thought she was simply worried.
Now, every memory looked different.
“What was recorded?””
Daniel hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
“What do you mean?””
“The backups were damaged.””
“Damaged?””
“Yes. Someone didn’t just delete the files. They tried to corrupt them.””
Adrian felt a cold feeling move through him.
“Can you recover them?””
“I’m working on it.””
“How long?””
“A few hours.””
Adrian looked at the clock.
It was past midnight.
“I want everything.””
“You’ll have it.””
When the call ended, Adrian remained standing by the window.
He looked toward the children’s rooms.
For years, he had thought his biggest responsibility was protecting them from the outside world.
Strangers.
Danger.
People who wanted his money.
He never imagined the threat would enter through the front door wearing a wedding ring.
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.
Adrian turned.
It was Lily.
She stood in the doorway holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her hair was messy.
Her eyes were tired.
“Daddy?””
He immediately softened.
“Hey, sweetheart. Why are you awake?””
She looked down.
“I had a bad dream.””
Adrian walked over and picked her up.
“What happened in your dream?””
She buried her face against his shoulder.
“You went away.””
His heart sank.
“I’m right here.””
“But before you came home…”
Her voice became smaller.
“She said you wouldn’t believe me.””
Adrian froze.
“Who said that?””
Lily didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
He already knew.
He carried her back to bed.
“Lily, can I ask you something?””
She nodded.
“Has Vanessa ever scared you before today?””
The little girl became very still.
Children had a strange way of answering questions.
Sometimes their silence told the truth before their words did.
Finally, Lily whispered.
“Yes.””
Adrian sat beside her.
“How long?””
She looked at her blanket.
“I don’t know.””
“Tell me what happened.””
“She says I’m not supposed to tell.””
“Why?””
“Because she says families have secrets.””
Adrian felt anger rise inside him, but he pushed it down.
He needed Lily to feel safe.
Not afraid.
“What secrets?””
Lily played with the edge of her blanket.
“She says if Daddy knows, he’ll be sad.””
Adrian gently held her hand.
“Daddy is sad because he didn’t know.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I tried to tell you.””
The words hurt more than anything Vanessa had done.
“You did?””
Lily nodded.
“Last month.””
Adrian searched his memory.
“What did you say?””
“I told you I didn’t like being alone with her.””
He went silent.
Because he remembered.
He remembered that morning.
He had been rushing to catch a flight.
Lily had stood beside his suitcase and refused to let go.
She had looked frightened.
He had laughed gently and told her she was just missing him.
Then Vanessa had walked in.
She had smiled.
“She’s going through a phase.””
A phase.
That was what he called it.
A child’s fear.
A child’s warning.
A child’s attempt to ask for help.
And he had ignored it.
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Lily looked at him.
“Are you mad?””
“No.””
“At me?””
“Never.””
“Then who?””
He looked toward the door.
“Someone who should have protected you.””
The next morning, Vanessa was gone.
Not because Adrian forgave her.
Because his lawyers had arranged a temporary separation agreement before sunrise.
She was staying at a private residence owned by her family while the investigation continued.
But Vanessa was not giving up.
At 9:00 a.m., Adrian received a call from her attorney.
The message was simple.
Vanessa wanted to talk.
Adrian almost refused.
Then he changed his mind.
Because he needed answers.
He met her in the mansion’s formal sitting room.
Vanessa looked completely different from the woman in yesterday’s footage.
She wore a simple dress.
No diamonds.
No perfect smile.
She looked vulnerable.
Adrian knew better now.
“I know you hate me,” she said.
“I don’t have time for performances.””
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
“There he is.””
“Who?””
“The cold businessman everyone thinks you are.””
Adrian stared.
“You locked children in a doghouse.””
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“A mistake is forgetting a meeting. A mistake is saying the wrong thing.””
His voice lowered.
“You made a choice.””
Vanessa looked away.
For the first time, she seemed less confident.
“There are things you don’t know.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked back at him.
“Your children are not the only ones keeping secrets.””
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said something he never expected.
“Ask your brother.””
The room went completely still.
Adrian’s expression changed.
“My brother?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Ethan knows more about this family than you think.””
Adrian stood slowly.
“My brother has nothing to do with this.””
“Are you sure?””
The question stayed between them.
Because Vanessa knew something.
Something she had no reason to know.
Adrian’s younger brother, Ethan, had always been the person he trusted most.
The one person he believed would never betray him.
But now doubt had entered.
And doubt was dangerous.
After Vanessa left, Adrian immediately searched through old records.
He found something strange.
A security access log.
A visitor entry.
Three weeks earlier.
A person had entered the mansion while Adrian was away.
The visitor identification had been hidden.
But the approval code belonged to someone familiar.
Someone who had unlimited access.
Someone whose name appeared on the screen.
Ethan Cross.
Adrian stared at the name.
His brother.
The person he trusted.
The person Vanessa had just accused.
Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.
And for the first time since discovering the doghouse, Adrian wondered if he had been searching for the wrong enemy.
May you like
Because maybe Vanessa was not the only person hiding something.
Maybe the entire family he built his life around was built on a lie.
