Chapter 4: The Woman Behind The Perfect Smile

The rain started just after midnight.

Heavy drops crashed against the mansion windows, turning the world outside into a blur of shadows and reflections.

Adrian Cross sat alone in the living room, staring at the empty fireplace.

For the first time in years, the mansion felt less like a home and more like a place where secrets had been buried.

Every hallway held a memory.

Every room carried a question.

The laughter of his children.

The family dinners.

The holidays.

The photographs.

All of it.

Now Adrian wondered how much of it had been real.

His phone sat on the table.

Waiting.

A message from Daniel had arrived twenty minutes earlier.

*The recovered files are ready. You need to see this yourself.*

Adrian had not opened them yet.

Not because he was afraid of what he would find.

Because he already knew.

The truth was coming.

And once he saw it, there would be no going back.

A small sound interrupted his thoughts.

Footsteps.

Adrian turned.

Lily stood at the bottom of the stairs holding Noah’s hand.

Both children looked tired.

“Why are you awake?”” Adrian asked gently.

Lily looked toward the dark hallway.

“I heard you talking.””

Adrian forced a small smile.

“I was just working.””

She looked at him carefully.

Children noticed more than adults realized.

“Are you sad?””

The question caught him off guard.

Adrian looked away.

“A little.””

“Because of Vanessa?””

He paused.

He hated that his daughter knew that name now.

A name that should have meant family.

Not fear.

“Yes.””

Lily squeezed Noah’s hand.

“Are you going to send her away?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

“Yes.””

“Forever?””

He did not answer immediately.

Because he understood something.

Children did not ask questions because they wanted details.

They asked because they needed safety.

“I’m going to make sure you and Noah are safe.””

Lily nodded slowly.

Then she whispered something that made Adrian’s heart stop.

“She wasn’t always mean.””

Adrian looked confused.

“What?””

“Vanessa.””

Lily stared at the floor.

“At first, she was nice.””

Adrian sat forward.

“What changed?””

Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“I don’t know.””

“Sweetheart, tell me what you remember.””

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she spoke.

“She used to sing to Noah.””

Adrian remembered.

Yes.

She had.

There were videos.

Pictures.

Moments when Vanessa looked like the perfect stepmother.

“She used to make cookies with me.””

Adrian’s expression softened.

“Then why did things change?””

Lily’s small voice became almost a whisper.

“After she talked to someone on the phone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“What did she say?””

Lily looked frightened.

“She said she was tired of waiting.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“When did she say that?””

“Before she started being angry.””

The room became silent.

Because Adrian realized something important.

Vanessa had not simply become cruel.

Something had happened.

Something had influenced her.

Something had changed her behavior.

And that meant someone else might have been involved long before the doghouse incident.

Adrian sent Lily back upstairs with Noah.

Then he opened the recovered files.

The first video appeared.

A security camera from the hallway.

The date was six months earlier.

Vanessa entered the room alone.

She looked around.

Then she made a phone call.

The audio was unclear at first.

Adrian increased the volume.

A man’s voice appeared.

Marcus.

His stomach tightened.

“Are you sure about this?”” Vanessa asked.

Marcus answered calmly.

“You need to stop hesitating.””

“I’m not hesitating.””

“You are.””

A pause.

“You still care about them.””

Adrian leaned closer.

Them.

Who was he talking about?

Vanessa’s voice became defensive.

“I care about my future.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“Then act like it.””

The video ended.

Adrian immediately opened another.

Three months earlier.

The backyard.

Vanessa stood near the garden.

She was holding her phone.

Again, Marcus’s voice.

“Your husband trusts you.””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

“He loves me.””

A pause.

“That makes it easier.””

Adrian froze.

His fingers stopped moving.

The words felt impossible.

Not because he was surprised.

Because some part of him had hoped there was another explanation.

There wasn’t.

Vanessa had not simply lost control.

She had been planning something.

The next file showed something worse.

A conversation inside the mansion office.

Vanessa and Marcus were sitting together.

Marcus placed documents on the desk.

“You need to understand the timeline.””

“I know.””

“When Adrian signs the transfer agreement, everything changes.””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“And the children?””

Marcus looked at her.

“They are not the priority.””

The recording ended.

Adrian sat completely still.

The room seemed to shrink around him.

The children.

His children.

They were not people to them.

They were obstacles.

Pieces on a chessboard.

His phone rang.

Daniel.

Adrian answered immediately.

“You saw the files?””

“Yes.””

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel took a breath.

“There’s more.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

Of course there was.

“There are financial records.””

“What kind?””

“Payments.””

“From who?””

“Marcus Vale.””

“To Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Over the past year, nearly two million dollars.””

Adrian stood.

“Two million?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

“We’re still investigating.””

Adrian looked at the television screen.

At Vanessa’s face.

The woman he had married.

The woman who had sat beside him at dinner.

The woman who had kissed his children goodnight.

All while accepting money from someone trying to destroy him.

“Find out.””

“I will.””

When the call ended, Adrian remained standing.

Then his phone received another message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*You’re finally seeing the truth.*

Adrian stared.

Another message appeared.

*But you’re still looking at the wrong person.*

His eyes narrowed.

He typed back.

*Who is this?*

No answer.

A minute passed.

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

Adrian opened it.

His entire body went cold.

It was a picture of Lily and Noah sleeping upstairs.

Taken tonight.

Inside his house.

His hands tightened around the phone.

Someone was watching them.

Someone had access.

Someone was close.

He immediately called security.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Adrian moved through the mansion quickly.

The cameras.

The doors.

The alarms.

Everything.

All normal.

Which made it worse.

Because whoever had sent the picture had not broken in.

They had already been inside.

He reached the children’s rooms.

The door was slightly open.

Adrian pushed it wider.

Lily and Noah were asleep.

Safe.

For now.

He checked every corner.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something on Lily’s nightstand.

A small white envelope.

His name was written on it.

Adrian.

His heart raced.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

*Ask Vanessa why she really married you.*

Adrian stared at the words.

Because suddenly, the question he had avoided for years became impossible to ignore.

Why had Vanessa chosen him?

At the time, it seemed obvious.

They met at a charity event.

She was beautiful.

Kind.

Understanding.

She seemed to love his children.

She seemed to love him.

But now every memory carried doubt.

The first date.

The rushed engagement.

The way she entered his life so perfectly.

Almost too perfectly.

The next morning, Adrian made a decision.

He would not confront Vanessa.

Not yet.

Because if she was willing to manipulate him for a year, she would not reveal the truth easily.

He needed proof.

He needed answers.

And he needed to know who was really controlling the game.

Before sunrise, Adrian hired a private investigator.

The instructions were simple.

Find everything about Vanessa Cross.

Her past.

Her relationships.

Her finances.

Every secret.

Because Adrian had spent years believing he knew the woman he married.

Now he needed to discover who she was before she became his wife.

And when the first report arrived three days later, Adrian realized the woman in his mansion had been hiding an identity he never imagined.

May you like

Vanessa Cross was not the person she claimed to be.

Not even close.
