Chapter 3: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

Adrian Cross stared at the security access record for nearly ten minutes without moving.

The name remained on the screen.

*Ethan Cross.*

His younger brother.

His best friend.

The person who had stood beside him when their company was nothing more than a small office with two employees and a dream.

The person who had helped him survive the darkest years of his life.

The person Adrian had trusted without hesitation.

And now his name was connected to the one place where Adrian’s children had been harmed.

“No,” Adrian whispered.

The word came out automatically.

A denial.

A defense.

Because some truths were harder to accept than others.

He could believe Vanessa had lied.

He could believe she had hidden things.

He could believe she had created a false image of herself.

But Ethan?

That was different.

Ethan was family.

Not by marriage.

Not by convenience.

By blood.

Adrian closed the security window and leaned back in his chair.

His office suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Every photograph on the wall seemed different.

There was one of him and Ethan standing outside their first company building.

Both of them looked exhausted.

Both of them looked happy.

Another showed them celebrating after their first major contract.

Another showed Ethan holding newborn Lily in the hospital.

Adrian remembered that day clearly.

Ethan had been nervous.

“You know I have no idea what to do with babies, right?”” he had joked.

Adrian had laughed.

“You’ll learn.””

And Ethan had smiled.

“I’ll protect her like she’s my own.””

The memory now felt painful.

Because Adrian wondered if he had misunderstood those words.

Maybe Ethan had protected Lily.

Or maybe he had been part of the reason she needed protection.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

His assistant, Claire, stepped inside.

“Mr. Cross?””

Adrian looked up.

“Did you find everything I asked for?””

Claire placed a folder on the desk.

“Yes.””

She hesitated.

“There’s something else.””

Adrian opened the folder.

“What?””

Claire looked uncomfortable.

“I checked the visitor records from the mansion.””

“And?””

“There were several entries under Mr. Ethan Cross’s authorization.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“How many?””

“Four times.””

“When?””

Claire opened another page.

“Three months ago. Two months ago. Last month. And yesterday.””

Adrian stopped.

“Yesterday?””

Claire nodded.

“Your brother entered the property yesterday morning.””

Adrian looked confused.

“Impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because he told me he was in Chicago.””

Claire lowered her eyes.

That was enough.

Adrian understood.

Ethan had lied.

The question was why.

“Cancel my meetings.””

Claire looked surprised.

“All of them?””

“All.””

“Are you sure?””

Adrian stood.

“I need to talk to my brother.””

An hour later, Ethan Cross walked into Adrian’s office.

He looked exactly as he always did.

Relaxed.

Confident.

Friendly.

The same man who had spent decades making Adrian believe they were unstoppable together.

“Brother.””

Ethan smiled.

But Adrian noticed something.

The smile did not reach his eyes.

“Adrian.””

The silence between them was heavy.

Ethan looked around.

“What’s going on?””

Adrian did not answer immediately.

Instead, he placed a printed document on the table.

Ethan glanced at it.

Then his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Adrian saw it.

A tiny reaction.

A moment of fear.

“You entered my house yesterday.””

Ethan looked up.

“I visit the mansion all the time.””

“You told me you were in Chicago.””

Ethan paused.

“I changed my plans.””

“You forgot to mention that?””

“Adrian—”

“Why were you there?””

Ethan sighed.

“This is about Vanessa, isn’t it?””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“How do you know?””

Another mistake.

Another crack.

Ethan realized too late what he had revealed.

“I heard about what happened.””

“From who?””

“People talk.””

“Not that quickly.””

Ethan looked away.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You knew something.””

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

Ethan became defensive.

“You think I’m involved?””

“I think my children were hurt, and everyone around me seems to know more than I do.””

The words hit Ethan.

For a moment, his expression softened.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

Adrian froze.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked at him.

And suddenly, Adrian saw something he had never seen before.

Guilt.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Guilt.

“Ethan.””

His brother sat down slowly.

“There are things Vanessa did that you don’t know.””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“Then tell me.””

Ethan rubbed his face.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

Adrian stared.

“You never said anything.””

“Because every time I tried, Vanessa changed the story.””

“That sounds familiar.””

Ethan looked at him.

“She was good at making people doubt themselves.””

Adrian remained silent.

“Three months ago,” Ethan continued, “I saw her yelling at Lily.””

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“What happened?””

“I don’t know everything.””

“Tell me what you know.””

Ethan looked down.

“She was angry because Lily spilled juice on the carpet.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

That sounded small.

Almost meaningless.

But he knew now.

Small moments became big ones when someone had power over a child.

“What did she do?””

“She grabbed Lily’s arm.””

Adrian’s hand tightened.

“Did Lily cry?””

“Yes.””

“Did you stop her?””

Ethan hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“Did you stop her?””

“I told Vanessa to calm down.””

“You told her to calm down?””

“I didn’t know she would go that far.””

Adrian stepped back.

“So you saw something wrong.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing.””

Ethan looked hurt.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“My daughter was afraid of someone living in her own home.””

Ethan stood.

“I was trying to handle it.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You were trying to avoid conflict.””

The accusation landed.

Because it was true.

Ethan had always been the peacekeeper.

The person who hated confrontation.

But sometimes avoiding conflict meant allowing someone else to suffer.

“I thought she would stop,” Ethan said quietly.

“She didn’t.””

“No.””

Ethan looked away.

“She got worse.””

The room became silent.

Adrian wanted to be angry.

He wanted to blame Ethan.

But another emotion was stronger.

Disappointment.

Because betrayal from an enemy was expected.

Betrayal from family was different.

“What else?”” Adrian asked.

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

“What else did you see?””

His brother hesitated.

Then slowly reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this in Vanessa’s office.””

Adrian stared at it.

“What is it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You opened it?””

“No.””

“Why give it to me now?””

Ethan looked exhausted.

“Because yesterday changed everything.””

Adrian took the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Vanessa.

And another person.

Adrian recognized Vanessa immediately.

But the man standing beside her made his blood run cold.

It was someone he knew.

Someone who had no reason to be in her life.

Someone whose name had appeared in company documents.

Someone who had recently tried to buy shares in Adrian’s company.

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“Where did you get this?””

“Her office.””

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

“And you kept it?””

“I was trying to figure out what was happening.””

Adrian looked back at the photograph.

The man beside Vanessa was smiling.

Like he had nothing to hide.

But Adrian knew that smile.

It was the smile of someone who believed they had already won.

The man was Marcus Vale.

A powerful investor.

A former business partner.

And the person who had spent the last year trying to gain control of Adrian’s company.

Adrian had rejected every offer.

He had refused to sell.

Marcus had always remained polite.

Professional.

Almost too polite.

Now Adrian wondered if the battle had never been about business.

Maybe it had been about something much closer.

“Why would Vanessa meet Marcus?”” Adrian asked.

Ethan shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Adrian looked at the photo again.

Then at the security records.

Then toward the window overlooking the mansion.

The truth was becoming clearer.

The doghouse was not the beginning.

It was the moment everything finally broke open.

Someone had been manipulating his family.

Someone had been moving quietly.

Patiently.

Waiting.

Adrian picked up his phone.

He called Daniel.

“Recover those deleted files immediately.””

Daniel answered.

“I’m still working on them.””

“I need them today.””

“Adrian—”

“Whatever is in those videos…”

He looked at the photograph.

“…it’s connected.””

After hanging up, Adrian turned to Ethan.

“One question.””

Ethan waited.

“Did Vanessa ever mention Marcus’s name?””

His brother went silent.

Too silent.

Adrian noticed.

“Ethan.””

Finally, Ethan answered.

“Yes.””

The word felt like a storm entering the room.

“When?””

“Last month.””

“What did she say?””

Ethan looked terrified.

“She said Marcus could give her everything you refused to.””

Adrian stared.

“Everything I refused?””

Ethan nodded.

“Money.””

A pause.

“Power.””

Another pause.

“And revenge.””

Adrian slowly placed the photograph on the desk.

For years, he had believed he was protecting his family from the world outside.

Now he understood.

The real danger had been standing much closer.

Close enough to know every weakness.

Close enough to enter his home.

Close enough to hurt the people he loved most.

And somewhere inside the mansion, hidden beneath years of lies, was the answer to one terrifying question:

How long had Vanessa and Marcus been planning this?
