Chapter 6: The Call That Changed Everything

Cole took out his own phone.

His fingers were shaking so badly that he nearly dropped it.

He dialed the number he had kept saved for years.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Then a familiar voice answered.

“Cole? Honey?””

His eyes closed.

“Mom.””

“What's wrong? You sound upset.””

Cole looked around the conference room.

Richard was staring at him.

Margaret had both hands pressed against her mouth.

Evelyn sat quietly, watching him.

“Mom, I need you to answer something.””

“Of course, sweetheart.””

“Did you know a man named Thomas Harrington?””

There was silence.

Not a long silence.

Just long enough.

Then Patricia sighed.

“I wondered when someone would finally tell you.””

Cole's knees weakened.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Since you were little.””

Cole turned away from the table.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Patricia's voice trembled.

“Because I promised Elizabeth I would give you a normal life.””

“Mom, I had a right to know.””

“I know.””

“Did Thomas try to contact me?””

Another silence.

“Yes.””

Cole gripped the phone.

“How many times?””

“Three that I know of.””

“And you sent the letters back?””

Patricia began crying.

“Yes.””

Cole looked at Marcus.

The older biker lowered his eyes.

He understood.

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid, Cole. You were all I had. I had lost my sister.

I had lost my husband. I couldn't lose you to a family that had already abandoned your mother.””

Cole's voice cracked.

“They didn't abandon me. They didn't even know me.””

“They knew enough to find you.””

“That's not the same thing.””

“I know, honey.””

Cole rubbed his forehead.

“Mom, Richard Harrington says you know where a blue notebook is.””

Patricia stopped crying.

When she spoke again, her voice was different.

“Where are you?””

“At the Harrington law office.””

“Then listen carefully. Don't let Richard leave with anything.””

Richard's face went pale.

Cole stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because that notebook contains the original records of what happened to Elizabeth.””

“What happened to her?””

Patricia breathed shakily.

“She didn't die in an ordinary accident.””

The entire room went silent.

Evelyn rose slowly.

“What did she say?””

Cole held up one hand.

“Mom, what are you talking about?””

Patricia continued.

“Your mother was driving home from work when another car forced her off the road. The police called it an accident. Thomas never believed them.””

Cole felt the room tilt.

“Who was driving the other car?””

“I don't know.””

“Did Thomas know?””

“I think he did.””

Cole looked toward Richard.

Richard's expression had changed completely.

Patricia's voice broke.

“Cole, your biological mother was investigating missing money from the family company. She had discovered that someone was using fake suppliers to steal from Thomas.””

Ethan looked sharply at Daniel Foster.

The financial records.

The 2.8 million dollars.

The suspicious transfers.

It was beginning to connect.

“Who was she investigating?”” Cole asked.

Patricia whispered.

“Richard.””

Richard shot to his feet.

“That's a lie!””

Everyone turned.

Cole lowered the phone.

“Did you hear that, Mom?””

“Yes,” Patricia replied.

“He's here.””

“Then tell him something for me.””

Cole put the call on speaker.

Patricia's voice filled the room.

“Richard Harrington, I kept quiet for twenty-three years because I wanted Cole to have a peaceful life. But I'm not protecting you anymore.””

Richard grabbed the back of his chair.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“I know what Elizabeth told me. I know what Thomas showed me. And I know what you tried to make me sign.””

Margaret stood.

“What did you make her sign?””

Richard turned.

“Mother, sit down.””

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“What did you make Patricia sign?””

Patricia continued.

“You came to my house two days after Elizabeth died. You told me that if I wanted to keep Cole, I would sign a statement saying Elizabeth had been mentally unstable and had been stealing from the company.””

Cole stared at the phone.

“What?””

“I refused,” Patricia said.

“Then you threatened to challenge the adoption.””

Cole's eyes filled.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you were a child.””

Richard laughed sharply.

“She has no proof.””

Patricia's response was immediate.

“I kept a copy.””

Richard went completely still.

Ethan stepped closer to the phone.

“Mrs. Bennett, this is Ethan Reed. My father was William Reed.””

Patricia inhaled sharply.

“William's son?””

“Yes.””

“Then you need to know something. Your father helped Thomas hide the original documents.””

Ethan's eyes widened.

“Hide them where?””

Patricia hesitated.

“In a place Richard would never think to look.””

“Where?””

“The old Harrington house.””

Evelyn slowly looked toward Marcus.

“That's where I live.””

Patricia's voice softened.

“Evelyn?””

“Yes, dear.””

“I'm sorry. I should have called you years ago.””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I was afraid Richard would come after Cole.””

Evelyn looked at Cole.

“Your mother was protecting you.””

Cole lowered his head.

“I know.””

Patricia continued.

“There's a loose floorboard in Thomas's study, beneath the old desk. The notebook is inside a metal box. He asked me to keep it there until the right time.””

Daniel Foster immediately wrote something down.

“Mrs. Bennett, can you come to the office today?””

“I can.””

“Please bring any documents you have.””

“I will.””

Cole swallowed.

“Mom, I'll come get you.””

“No, sweetheart. Not yet.””

“Why?””

“Because there's something else you need to know.””

Cole waited.

Patricia's voice became barely audible.

“Elizabeth didn't just leave you an inheritance.””

Cole looked at the papers on the table.

“What else?””

“She left you a message.””

“What message?””

“A recording. Thomas made a copy of it before he died.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“There's a reference to an audio archive in the file.””

Patricia continued.

“Elizabeth recorded it the night before the accident. She said that if anything happened to her, you deserved to know the truth.””

Cole's face crumpled.

“Where is it?””

“I don't know. But Thomas told me he had hidden it with the blue notebook.””

Richard suddenly lunged toward the table.

He grabbed the folder containing the original trust documents.

Marcus moved immediately.

He caught Richard's wrist before the man could reach the door.

“Put it down.””

Richard struggled.

“Get your hands off me!””

Marcus tightened his grip just enough to stop him.

“Put. It. Down.””

Daniel Foster stepped forward.

“Mr. Harrington, I am calling building security.””

Richard dropped the folder.

Papers scattered across the carpet.

Margaret stood frozen.

Then she looked at her son.

“Richard, tell me the truth.””

He glared at her.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed for this family.””

“What have you done?””

“Everything!””

His voice cracked.

“Do you think Thomas built that company alone? Do you think he knew anything about running it? I was the one who handled everything while he played the generous businessman!””

Evelyn stared at him.

“And you stole from him?””

Richard pointed at her.

“Stay out of this!””

Cole stepped between them.

“Don't talk to her like that.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You have no idea who you are.””

Cole looked him straight in the eyes.

“I'm the son of the woman you couldn't silence.””

For the first time, Richard looked afraid.

Security arrived minutes later.

Daniel Foster requested that the original documents remain secured in the firm's evidence room. Richard was escorted into the hallway while arrangements were made for the authorities to be contacted about the suspected financial misconduct and document irregularities.

Margaret remained seated.

She looked suddenly much older.

Evelyn approached her.

“Are you all right?””

Margaret gave a hollow laugh.

“After everything I've done to you, you're asking whether I'm all right?””

Evelyn didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, “I spent forty-two years hoping you would one day treat me like family.””

Margaret lowered her head.

“I know.””

“I don't hate you, Margaret. But I won't let you hurt me again.””

Margaret began crying.

Across the room, Cole was still holding his phone.

“Mom?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“I'm coming home.””

Patricia laughed softly through her tears.

“I'll put the kettle on.””

He smiled.

For the first time that afternoon, his expression looked peaceful.

Then Daniel Foster approached with another sheet of paper.

“Ethan, there's a problem.””

Ethan turned.

“What now?””

Daniel pointed to a reference number in the estate file.

“The blue notebook may contain evidence of financial misconduct, but the recording Patricia mentioned is listed under a separate storage location.””

“Where?””

Daniel hesitated.

“According to your father's handwritten note, it was deposited in a private safety box under a different name.””

Ethan read the line.

Then he looked at Cole.

The name written there wasn't Thomas Harrington.

It wasn't Elizabeth Harrington.

It was Patricia Bennett.

And beneath it was a date.

*November 3, 2003.*

Cole stared at the date.

“That was the day my mother adopted me.””

Ethan slowly turned the page.

“There is one more instruction.””

“What?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Your biological mother requested that the recording only be played when you were old enough to understand why she had to leave you.””

Cole's voice trembled.

“Then let's find it.””

But before anyone could move, Daniel Foster's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face went white.

“Mrs. Bennett,” he whispered.

Cole grabbed his arm.

“What happened to my mother?””

Daniel looked at him.

May you like

“There's been an accident.””

And somewhere across town, an ambulance was racing toward Patricia Bennett's home.
