Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Will

Cole Bennett stared at Ethan.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to understand the words.

“Say that again.””

Ethan looked down at the document.

“Your name is written here. Cole Bennett. There's a reference number beside it and a handwritten instruction from my father.””

Cole shook his head.

“I've never met Thomas Harrington. I swear.””

Margaret Harrington suddenly reached across the table.

“Give me that document.””

Ethan pulled it away.

“No.””

“You don't understand what you're holding.””

“Then explain it.””

Margaret's lips trembled.

Richard stepped between them.

“This meeting is finished. Everyone needs to leave.””

Marcus didn't move.

“Funny. You were pretty determined to keep us here ten minutes ago.””

Richard pointed at Cole.

“He has no business being involved in this family's affairs.””

Cole slowly stood.

“Lady, I don't even know what family you're talking about.””

Margaret looked at him.

For the first time, her expression wasn't arrogant.

It was frightened.

“Your mother's name,” she whispered.

“Was it Patricia?””

Cole stopped breathing for a moment.

Daniel looked at him.

Marcus turned.

Even Ethan lowered the document.

“How do you know my mother's name?”” Cole asked.

Margaret covered her mouth.

“Because I remember her.””

Cole's face hardened.

“My mother died when I was sixteen. She never mentioned any Harrington.””

“She wouldn't have.””

“Why?””

Margaret looked toward the window.

“Because I made sure she disappeared from our lives.””

Cole took one step forward.

“What did you just say?””

Marcus put a hand against Cole's chest.

“Easy.””

But Cole wasn't looking at Marcus.

He was staring at the old woman.

“Tell me what you know.””

Margaret sat down.

Her pearl necklace shifted against her collar as she lowered her head.

“Twenty-three years ago, Thomas had a younger sister named Elizabeth. She died in a car accident. Her husband had already abandoned her, and she left behind a little boy.””

Cole frowned.

“I don't see what that has to do with me.””

“Elizabeth's little boy was raised by Patricia Bennett.””

Cole's expression changed.

“Patricia wasn't my aunt. She was my mother.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes. She adopted you.””

Cole's jaw tightened.

“My biological mother died when I was two. That's what my adoption papers say.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Your biological mother was Elizabeth Harrington.””

The words seemed to drain the color from Cole's face.

He looked at Marcus.

Then Ethan.

Then back at Margaret.

“No.””

“I'm sorry.””

“No, you're not.””

His voice rose.

“My mother worked double shifts at a grocery store. She packed my lunches. She sat through every school concert.

She taught me to ride a bicycle. She was my mother.””

“I'm not saying she wasn't.””

“Then don't stand there telling me some rich family owns a piece of my life.””

Evelyn reached for his hand.

“Cole, sweetheart.””

He looked down at her.

She squeezed his fingers.

“Whatever this means, the woman who raised you is still your mother.””

Cole's eyes became glassy.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Then he turned toward Margaret.

“Why did you say my name was on that document?””

Margaret looked at Ethan.

“Thomas believed Cole was entitled to something.””

“Entitled to what?””

“The family inheritance.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Absolutely not. This is absurd.””

Daniel Foster opened the document again.

“Actually, there is a provision here establishing a separate beneficiary trust for the descendants of Elizabeth Harrington.””

Richard snatched his own copy.

“Elizabeth had no children.””

Cole's voice was cold.

“Apparently, she did.””

Daniel continued.

“According to this agreement, the trust was established before Elizabeth's death. Its value was to be protected until her child reached adulthood.””

Cole shook his head.

“How much?””

Daniel checked the attached schedule.

“I can't give you an exact current valuation without a full accounting. But the original allocation was substantial.””

Richard leaned forward.

“It's invalid. My father never approved it.””

Ethan pointed to the signature.

“My father drafted it. There are two witnesses and a notarized acknowledgment.””

Margaret whispered something.

Evelyn leaned closer.

“What did you say?””

Margaret looked at Cole.

“Your mother begged me to accept you.””

Cole's face went still.

“She came to my house with you when you were a baby. She said she couldn't manage alone after Elizabeth died.””

“Why didn't you take me in?””

Margaret's eyes filled.

“Because Thomas wanted to. But I refused.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because I believed Elizabeth had disgraced our family.””

Cole stepped away from the table.

Marcus's expression darkened.

“You rejected a baby because of a family reputation?””

Margaret looked down.

“I was wrong.””

Cole gave a humorless laugh.

“That's convenient.””

Daniel Foster turned to another page.

“There's a note from Thomas.””

Ethan read it aloud.

“Margaret,

If Cole is ever found, he must know that Elizabeth never abandoned him. She died believing he would be safe with Patricia.

I promised her I would protect his future, even if I could not protect her life.

I will not allow our family to erase her son twice.””

Cole lowered his head.

His shoulders shook once.

Then he pulled his hand away from Evelyn's and walked toward the window.

Outside, the afternoon sun reflected off the motorcycles parked along the curb.

He stared at them as if they were the only things in the world that still made sense.

Marcus approached.

“You okay?””

Cole shook his head.

“No.””

“Fair enough.””

“I don't want their money.””

Marcus nodded.

“Then don't take it.””

Cole looked at him.

“What if it's mine?””

“Then you decide what to do with it. Not them.””

Behind them, Margaret began speaking.

“Cole, please. There is something else you should know.””

He didn't turn.

“What?””

“Your mother left a letter.””

Cole spun around.

“What letter?””

Margaret looked toward Richard.

He immediately stood.

“Mother, stop.””

But Margaret continued.

“Elizabeth wrote it shortly before she died. Thomas kept it.””

“Where is it?””

Margaret's eyes filled again.

“I don't know.””

Richard slammed the folder shut.

“This is over.””

Daniel Foster blocked the door.

“Mr. Harrington, nobody is leaving with original estate documents.””

Richard glared.

“Move.””

“No.””

For a moment, the room seemed ready to explode.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Richard.””

He turned.

“What?””

She looked at him with a sadness that was somehow more frightening than anger.

“Where is the blue notebook?””

Richard's expression changed.

His eyes flicked toward Margaret.

Then toward the door.

And Cole suddenly understood something.

The notebook wasn't just a collection of business records.

May you like

It contained the truth about his mother.

And Richard knew exactly where it was.
