Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Wheel

Nobody moved.

The words hung in Thomas Harrington's study like smoke after an explosion.

Cole stared at Michael.

“You were driving?””

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

“I was twenty-four. I had been drinking. Richard told me Elizabeth was threatening to destroy the company, and he wanted me to help him scare her into backing down.””

Cole's hands began shaking.

“Scare her?””

“He said we would talk. That's all.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

Michael shook his head.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No. You don't.””

Cole stepped closer.

“My mother was twenty-nine years old when she died. She had a little boy waiting for her at home. She was trying to build a life for us.””

Michael covered his face.

“I know.””

“Then why did you get behind that wheel?””

Michael sank into a chair.

“Richard told me she had stolen company money. He said she was blackmailing the family. I believed him.””

Evelyn stood near the desk, gripping its edge.

“Michael, did you hit her car?””

Michael looked up.

“I didn't mean to.””

Evelyn's hand flew to her mouth.

Cole stopped breathing.

“Answer the question.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

A single word.

Twenty-three years of unanswered questions suddenly had a face.

Cole backed away.

“Did you stop?””

Michael began crying harder.

“I pulled over. I got out. Her car was down the embankment.””

“Was she alive?””

Michael couldn't answer.

Cole grabbed the edge of the desk.

“WAS SHE ALIVE?””

“Yes.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“She was conscious,” Michael whispered.

“She was calling for help.””

Cole's face crumpled.

“And you left her?””

Michael nodded.

“I panicked. I called Richard.””

“What did he say?””

“He told me to get back in the car.””

“And you listened?””

“I was scared.””

Cole laughed once, a broken sound.

“My mother was lying in a wrecked car, and you were scared?””

Marcus stepped between them before Cole could move.

“Cole.””

“Get out of my way.””

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

Marcus held his gaze.

“I know you want to hurt him. But don't give him another way to make this about you.””

Cole's breathing was ragged.

He looked at Michael again.

“Did she say anything?””

Michael wiped his face.

“She kept asking about her son.””

Cole closed his eyes.

“What did you tell her?””

“Nothing.””

“Did she know who you were?””

Michael nodded.

“She recognized me.””

Cole's voice dropped.

“And she asked you to help her?””

Michael looked down.

“Yes.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Evelyn slowly approached her son.

“Your father knew?””

Michael nodded.

“He found out three days later. Richard had arranged for the accident to be reported as a single-vehicle crash. He told the police I hadn't been involved.””

“Why didn't Thomas expose you?””

Michael's face twisted.

“He tried. Richard threatened to reveal that I had been drinking and that I had helped cover up the company's financial records. He said the scandal would destroy the family.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“And your father let you live with that secret?””

“No. He never forgave me.””

Michael reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“Dad gave me this before he died.””

He placed it on the desk.

Ethan opened it.

It was a handwritten statement.

The first paragraph was dated eleven years earlier.

Thomas had documented his suspicions about Richard's financial activities and Michael's involvement in Elizabeth's death.

At the bottom was a sentence written in bold ink.

If my sons cannot tell the truth themselves, the evidence must speak for them.

Daniel Foster photographed every page.

“This needs to go directly to the police.””

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

Cole looked at him.

“Then why are you still protecting Richard?””

Michael lowered his head.

“Because he has something else.””

“What?””

“The original accident report. The photographs. The evidence that I was there.””

Ethan frowned.

“Where?””

“His private office.””

Daniel checked his phone.

“Then we need to preserve that location before anything disappears.””

Michael shook his head.

“You don't understand. Richard has been expecting this day.””

Cole turned.

“What does that mean?””

Michael hesitated.

Then his phone vibrated again.

This time, he answered.

Richard's voice came through the speaker.

“Did you get the notebook?””

Michael stared at the floor.

“No.””

A pause.

Then Richard spoke again.

“You have five minutes to fix this.””

“Richard, we need to talk.””

“There's nothing to discuss.””

“You told me Elizabeth was dead when I arrived.””

Silence.

Michael's eyes widened.

Cole leaned closer to the phone.

“Did you hear that, Uncle Richard?””

Richard's voice changed.

“Cole. Put Michael on the phone.””

“No.””

“You don't know what you're doing.””

“I know my mother was alive when Michael left her.””

Another pause.

Then Richard said something that made Ethan immediately signal Daniel to keep the call recording.

“Your mother should have minded her own business.””

Cole closed his eyes.

“Did you kill her?””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Your mother was going to destroy everything.””

“Did you kill her?””

“I protected this family.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at his phone.

“We have the statement, the documents, and now a recorded conversation. It's not a complete case, but it's enough to justify immediate police involvement.””

Michael sat with his head in his hands.

Andrew looked sick.

Evelyn approached the window.

For forty-two years, she had believed that the Harrington family was simply cruel.

Now she understood that cruelty had been hiding something much worse.

Cole picked up the photograph of Elizabeth.

He held it against his chest.

“I'm going to find out everything.””

Marcus nodded.

“We will.””

Then Cole's phone rang.

The hospital.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A nurse spoke.

“Mr. Bennett, your mother has regained consciousness.””

Cole's knees nearly gave out.

“Can I see her?””

“Yes. But there's something you should know.””

His smile disappeared.

“What?””

“She asked us to tell you that the person who attacked her wasn't a stranger.””

Cole looked toward Michael.

The nurse continued.

“She recognized him.””

May you like

And when she gave Cole the name, he realized the danger hadn't ended.

It had only changed direction.
