Chapter 16: The Man Behind the Locked Door

Cole read the message twice before he lowered the phone.

Richard Harrington had visited the care facility.

And Daniel Reed was gone.

For a moment, the hospital corridor seemed to tilt beneath Cole's feet.

Patricia reached for his hand.

“What's happened?””

He showed her the message.

Her face went pale.

“Then he's alive?””

“We don't know.””

“But you have to find out.””

Cole nodded.

He kissed her forehead, promised to return, and hurried out.

Marcus was waiting near the elevators. Ethan stood beside him, still holding the photograph of his father’s old briefcase.

“What did Mitchell say?”” Marcus asked.

“Daniel disappeared from the care facility. Richard was the last person seen visiting him.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“My uncle has been alive all this time.””

“We don't know that for certain,” Marcus said gently.

Ethan looked at him.

“Then why would Richard pay for his treatment for twenty-three years?””

“Because he wanted to keep something buried,” Cole replied.

They found Detective Mitchell in the hospital parking lot. She was speaking with two officers beside an unmarked vehicle.

“Get in,” she said when she saw them.

The drive to the care facility took forty minutes.

The building sat behind a line of pine trees, surrounded by a high fence. A uniformed guard waited at the entrance.

Detective Mitchell showed her badge.

“We need access to patient records, visitor logs, and security footage.””

The facility director, a nervous man named Dr. Harris, met them in his office.

“I've already spoken with the police,” he said.

“Then you know why we're here,” Mitchell replied.

Dr. Harris nodded.

“Mr. Reed was admitted under the name David Miller. He suffered severe injuries years ago and required long-term neurological care.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“What kind of injuries?””

“Traumatic brain injury. He couldn't speak for several years. His mobility was limited.””

“Was he conscious?””

“Intermittently. In recent months, he'd become more responsive.””

Cole gripped the back of a chair.

“Did he know who he was?””

Dr. Harris hesitated.

“Sometimes.””

“Did he know he had a son?””

The doctor looked at Ethan, then at Cole.

“Yes.””

Cole's throat tightened.

“What did he say?””

“He asked about a boy named Cole.””

Nobody moved.

The doctor continued.

“He also asked whether Elizabeth was safe.””

Cole looked down.

“Did he know she was dead?””

Dr. Harris nodded sadly.

“He became distressed whenever someone mentioned her name.””

Detective Mitchell placed a photograph of Richard on the desk.

“Was this man here yesterday?””

Dr. Harris confirmed it.

“He visited at approximately four in the afternoon. He claimed to be a distant relative.””

“Did he speak with Mr. Reed?””

“Yes. Privately.””

“Did anyone hear the conversation?””

The doctor shook his head.

But a nurse named Karen had been standing outside the room.

She entered carrying a tablet.

“I heard something,” she said.

Mitchell turned.

“What?””

Karen looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Harrington told him that his family was finished waiting. He said the old arrangements were over.””

Cole stepped closer.

“What did Daniel say?””

Karen swallowed.

“He said, ‘You already took Elizabeth. You won't take my son.’”

Cole's eyes filled.

“What happened after that?””

“Mr. Harrington left. About twenty minutes later, another visitor arrived.

A woman. She signed the register using the name Susan Miller.””

Detective Mitchell frowned.

“Susan Miller?””

Cole immediately called Susan.

She answered on the second ring.

“Cole?””

“Did you visit a man named David Miller yesterday?””

A pause.

Then Susan whispered:

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell us?””

“Because I was afraid Richard was watching.””

“Where is he?””

“I don't know. But I helped him leave.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Why?””

Susan's voice broke.

“Because Daniel asked me to.””

Susan met them at a small roadside café outside the city.

She looked exhausted.

When Cole entered, she immediately stood.

“I owe you the truth.””

“You've said that before,” Cole replied.

“I know.””

She placed a folded document on the table.

“Daniel wasn't able to leave the facility alone. He was still recovering. But he had begun remembering things.””

Ethan sat down.

“What things?””

“Richard. The construction accident. Elizabeth.””

Cole's voice became quiet.

“Did he remember my mother?””

Susan nodded.

“He remembered everything.””

She explained that Daniel had been transferred to the care facility after the construction accident. William Reed had discovered that his brother had survived, but Richard threatened to accuse William of fraud if he revealed the truth.

William arranged for Daniel's treatment under a false identity.

He believed that once Richard's influence weakened, he could bring Daniel home.

But William died before he could complete the plan.

“Why didn't Daniel come forward afterward?”” Ethan asked.

Susan looked at him.

“Because Richard told him Cole had been adopted into a safe family and that revealing himself would put the child in danger.””

Cole lowered his head.

“He knew about me.””

“He knew you were alive. He knew Patricia loved you. He also knew Richard was capable of hurting anyone who got close.””

“Then why did he contact Patricia last year?””

Susan shook her head.

“He didn't know how to reach you. He asked me to find out whether it was safe.””

Cole stared at her.

“And you didn't tell us.””

“I was afraid.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Where is he now?””

Susan looked toward the window.

“An old cottage near the coast. He wanted to be somewhere quiet while he recovered.””

“Take us there.””

Susan hesitated.

“There's something else.””

She slid a second paper across the table.

It was a photocopy of a bank transfer.

The recipient was a company registered in Richard's name.

The payment description read:

*PATIENT RELOCATION — FINAL DISBURSEMENT.*

Ethan examined the date.

“Yesterday.””

Susan nodded.

“Richard paid someone to move Daniel. I believe he intended to take him somewhere he couldn't be found.””

Detective Mitchell studied the document.

“Who received the money?””

Susan pointed to the name.

“Victor Hale.””

Cole looked up.

“Richard and Victor are working together.””

“They've always been working together,” Susan said.

The cottage stood above a gray stretch of coastline.

When they arrived, the front door was open.

Cole stepped inside first.

A wheelchair stood near the fireplace.

A blanket lay across the back of a chair.

On the table sat a photograph of Elizabeth.

And beside it, a small envelope.

Cole picked it up.

His name was written across the front.

He opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

I wanted to meet you as your father, not as another problem for you to solve.

Cole closed his eyes.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A weak voice.

“Cole?””

Everyone turned.

A thin man stood in the doorway, leaning heavily against the wall.

His hair was white, his face deeply lined, and one side of his body seemed weaker than the other.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

Cole knew them from the photograph.

“Daniel?””

The man nodded.

Ethan stepped forward, tears already running down his face.

“Uncle Daniel?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Ethan?””

Ethan covered his mouth.

Daniel reached for Cole.

“I've waited so long.””

Cole stood frozen.

He had imagined this moment in a hundred different ways.

He had imagined anger, questions, accusations.

But when Daniel opened his arms, all Cole could manage was one broken word.

“Dad?””

Daniel began to cry.

“Yes, son.””

Cole crossed the room and held him.

For a few seconds, the world outside disappeared.

Then Daniel whispered into his shoulder:

“Richard knows where we are.””

A car engine started outside.

Marcus turned toward the window.

A black SUV was approaching the cottage.

And it wasn't alone.
