Chapter 7: The Man In The Photograph
The photograph sat on the table between them like a weapon.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody needed to.
The image had already done its damage.
Major Ethan Brooks stared at the picture with a look Olivia had never seen before.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Real fear.
The kind that came from recognizing something you prayed you would never see again.
Olivia noticed immediately.
She had spent years studying people.
Not because she wanted to.
Because her father taught her that the smallest details often revealed the biggest truths.
A person’s hands.
Their breathing.
The way their eyes moved when they heard a name.
Brooks was hiding something.
And now she knew exactly what question to ask.
“Why are you standing beside my father?””
The room remained silent.
Brooks looked at the photograph again.
Then at Olivia.
“I didn’t know this existed.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“It isn’t.””
Olivia stood.
“Then give me one.””
Colonel Whitmore watched carefully.
He knew something had shifted.
Until this moment, everyone had been searching for Thomas Carter.
Now they had to question the people who claimed to be searching with them.
Brooks slowly sat down.
For the first time since Olivia met him, he looked older.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone carrying a weight he had spent years pretending was not there.
“Your father saved my life.””
Olivia said nothing.
Brooks continued.
“Twenty years ago, before I became a major, I was assigned to an operation overseas. It was supposed to be routine.””
He looked at the photograph.
“It wasn’t.””
The room became quieter.
“There was information being moved through channels that didn’t make sense. Orders changed without explanation. People were receiving instructions from sources they shouldn’t have had access to.””
Olivia remembered her father’s words.
Truth is usually buried beneath the version people find easier to accept.
Brooks continued.
“I started asking questions.””
“And someone didn’t like that.””
“No.””
His eyes hardened.
“Someone tried to make sure I stopped asking.””
Olivia studied him.
“What happened?””
“Thomas found me.””
The answer surprised her.
“Your father was not supposed to be there. He wasn’t part of my mission. But he showed up anyway.””
Brooks smiled faintly.
“That was Thomas. He always seemed to know when something was wrong before anyone else did.””
“What did he do?””
“He got me out.””
A pause.
“But before he left, he told me something.””
Olivia leaned forward.
“What?””
Brooks looked directly at her.
“He told me that someday his daughter might come looking for answers.””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
“He said if that day came, I was supposed to help you.””
Olivia felt anger rising.
“Help me?””
“Yes.””
“You knew about me?””
“Not like this.””
Brooks shook his head.
“I knew your father had a daughter. I knew he loved you more than anything.””
Olivia looked away.
“Then why didn’t you ever find me?””
Brooks had no immediate answer.
That hurt more than if he had lied.
Finally, he spoke.
“Because he told me not to.””
The words landed heavily.
Olivia turned back.
“He told you to stay away from me?””
“He told me staying away was the only way to keep you alive.””
The room went still.
Olivia laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“All these years, everyone made decisions for me.””
Her voice became sharper.
“My father disappeared. The military hid information. You watched from a distance.””
She looked around the room.
“And somehow everyone thought that was protecting me?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Olivia picked up the photograph.
Her eyes remained on Brooks.
“How long have you known he was alive?””
Brooks hesitated.
“Answer me.””
“Three years.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
Three years.
Her father had been alive.
Three years.
And she had not known.
“You saw him.””
“Yes.””
“You talked to him.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“No.””
The anger in Olivia’s face was unmistakable.
Brooks accepted it.
He deserved it.
“He made me promise.””
“That was not his decision to make.””
“No.””
Brooks looked down.
“It wasn’t.””
For several seconds, Olivia stood there holding the photograph.
Then something changed.
A detail.
Something small.
Something nobody else noticed.
She looked closer.
At the background.
At the cabin.
At the mountain line behind it.
Her anger shifted into focus.
“Where was this taken?””
Whitmore looked surprised.
“We don’t know.””
“Yes, you do.””
Everyone looked at her.
Olivia pointed at the image.
“The mountain pattern.””
Brooks frowned.
“What about it?””
“My father always photographed places with landmarks.””
She tapped the corner.
“The ridge behind the cabin.””
Whitmore moved closer.
“You recognize it?””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“But he wanted someone to.””
She studied the image again.
Then she noticed something else.
A small mark carved into the cabin wall.
A symbol.
Her father’s symbol.
The same one he used in childhood games when he wanted her to find hidden messages.
She whispered:
“He left a trail.””
Brooks stared.
“Your father planned for this.””
“Yes.””
Whitmore looked at the photograph.
“Then we find the location.””
Olivia nodded.
But she already knew something else.
If Thomas Carter had left a trail, it meant he expected someone to follow.

The question was:
Who else was following?
