Chapter 12: The Mission That Was Never Finished
The abandoned facility looked exactly like a grave.
Broken walls.
Empty rooms.
Forgotten equipment.
A place the world had moved on from.
But Thomas Carter knew better.
Some places did not disappear.
They waited.
Olivia walked beside him through the ruins.
Neither spoke.
Too much history existed between them.
Too many years.
Too many questions.
Finally, she stopped.
“Why here?””
Thomas looked around.
“This is where everything changed.””
“The mission?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
He remained silent.
Olivia waited.
She had learned patience.
Not because she was naturally patient.
Because her father taught her.
Finally, Thomas answered.
“We were sent here to recover information.””
“Information about the network.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“I found something else.””
“What?””
Thomas looked at the building.
“A person.””
Olivia frowned.
“Daniel.””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised her.
“You met him here?””
“He was part of the operation.””
Brooks looked shocked.
“I thought he joined later.””
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“He was there from the beginning.””
The pieces began connecting.
Daniel had not discovered the secret.
He had been part of it.
“What happened between you two?””
Thomas looked away.
“I trusted him.””
Olivia understood.
“That is not the whole answer.””
“No.””
He sighed.
“I believed I could teach him the difference between understanding power and abusing it.””
“And you couldn’t.””
“No.””
The honesty was painful.
“He learned too well.””
They entered the main building.
Inside, everything was untouched.
Like someone had preserved it.
A desk.
A computer terminal.
Old documents.
Olivia noticed something.
A symbol carved into the wall.
Her father’s symbol.
Another trail.
Thomas approached it.
“You remember this?””
“Yes.””
“You know what it means?””
She nodded.
“It means look closer.””
A small smile appeared.
“You really did listen.””
Olivia examined the wall.
Then the floor.
Then the desk.
Finally, she found it.
A hidden compartment.
Inside was a recording device.
Brooks looked at Thomas.
“You left this?””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Olivia picked it up.
“Then Daniel did.””
They activated it.
A younger Thomas appeared.
Years earlier.
Standing beside Daniel Cross.
The two men looked completely different.
Younger.
Hopeful.
Before everything broke.
Young Thomas spoke.
“The truth cannot belong to one person.””
Young Daniel answered:
“Then it belongs to everyone.””
The recording continued.
They discussed the network.
The corruption.
The people involved.
But then the conversation changed.
Daniel said something that made everyone freeze.
“If we expose them, thousands of innocent people will be hurt.””
Young Thomas looked surprised.
“We protect innocent people.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“We protect the truth.””
A pause.
“Even if people die because of it.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Olivia looked at her father.
“You knew.””
Thomas nodded.
“I knew who he was becoming.””
“And you stopped him.””
“I tried.””
“But you failed.””
Thomas looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
Then the lights turned on.
Everyone froze.
A voice came through the speakers.
“Welcome back, Thomas.””
Daniel.
Again.
But this time, he was not hiding.
A door opened at the far end of the building.
Daniel Cross stepped into the room.
No weapon.
No armor.
Just confidence.
“I wondered who would arrive first.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
“You brought her.””
Daniel looked at Olivia.
“My student’s daughter.””
Olivia’s expression hardened.
“I’m not your student.””
Daniel smiled.
“Not yet.””
Brooks moved slightly.
Daniel noticed.
“Major Brooks.””
A pause.
“You always were the loyal one.””
Brooks stared.
“What did you do?””
Daniel looked amused.
“I showed people what they already believed.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means I never needed to control anyone.””
He looked at Olivia.
“I only needed to show them their weaknesses.””
Thomas stepped between them.
“Leave her alone.””
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“You still don’t understand.””
He looked at Olivia.
“Your father spent years trying to protect you from the truth.””
A pause.
“But the truth is the only thing that can make you powerful.””
Olivia stared at him.
“What do you want?””
Daniel answered immediately.
“The same thing your father wanted.””
She waited.
“The truth.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You still think we are different.””
A quiet smile.
“We’re not.””
He looked back at Olivia.
“The only difference is that I was willing to finish what he started.””
The building went silent.
Then Daniel placed a file on the table.
A file with Olivia’s name.
“You want answers?””
He pushed it forward.
“Open it.””
Olivia stared at the file.
Because she knew.

Whatever was inside would change everything.
And this time, there would be no going back.
