Chapter 6: The Truth Thomas Carter Buried

The message remained on the screen for nine minutes.

Nobody deleted it.

Nobody touched it.

Because everyone understood something important.

Whoever sent it wanted them to see it.

They wanted Olivia to know they were watching.

They wanted her afraid.

But fear was not something Olivia Carter handled the way most people did.

Fear made some people run.

Some people freeze.

Olivia became quieter.

More focused.

Major Brooks recognized that immediately.

It was the same expression she had before every shot.

The same concentration.

The same ability to remove everything unnecessary.

“You’re thinking,” Brooks said.

Olivia looked at the monitor.

“Yes.””

“About what?””

“About why they want me to know they exist.””

Whitmore approached.

“To intimidate you.””

“No.””

She turned.

“If they wanted intimidation, they would have sent a threat.””

The colonel studied her.

“Then what?””

“A message.””

Brooks nodded slowly.

“She thinks like him.””

The words bothered Olivia.

Not because they were wrong.

Because they were true.

Her entire life, people had told her she inherited her father’s talent.

But nobody ever explained what that meant.

They talked about shooting.

Accuracy.

Skill.

But Thomas Carter’s real gift was observation.

Seeing patterns.

Finding meaning where others saw nothing.

Olivia looked back at the message.

“Find the source.””

Whitmore looked surprised.

“We are already trying.””

“No.””

She pointed at the screen.

“You’re looking for who sent it.””

“Yes.””

“Look for why they sent it.””

The room became quiet.

Brooks smiled slightly.

“That’s exactly what your father would say.””

Olivia ignored the comment.

“Someone wanted access to my records. They wanted my father’s name connected to mine. Then they sent this message.””

She looked at Whitmore.

“They are not hiding.””

“No.””

“They are guiding us.””

The colonel frowned.

“Why would an enemy guide us?””

Olivia looked at the old photograph.

“Maybe they aren’t the enemy.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that possibility was worse.

If the person watching them was not an enemy, then the question became harder.

Who was protecting the secret?

And who was trying to expose it?

Later that night, Olivia returned to the range facility alone.

She needed space.

Not comfort.

Not answers.

Space.

She sat beside her truck and opened the rifle case.

The old rifle rested inside.

She ran her fingers across the stock.

Her father had held this weapon.

Her father had trusted this weapon.

And now she realized something.

He had trusted her too.

A small compartment hidden beneath the rifle padding caught her attention.

She frowned.

She had owned the rifle for years.

She had cleaned it hundreds of times.

How had she never noticed?

Carefully, she removed the hidden panel.

Inside was a small metal container.

Her hands froze.

Because she knew immediately.

This was intentional.

She opened it.

Inside was a memory card.

And one handwritten sentence.

For Olivia.

Only when you are ready.

Her heartbeat increased.

She carried the card back inside.

Within minutes, Brooks and Whitmore joined her.

Nobody spoke as the file loaded.

A video appeared.

The screen showed darkness.

Then a man appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Thomas Carter.

Olivia stopped breathing.

For several seconds, nobody in the room existed except her and the screen.

Her father looked directly into the camera.

“Olivia.””

His voice broke something inside her.

Not because it was sad.

Because it was real.

“If you are seeing this, then I failed to protect you from being involved.””

Olivia’s eyes filled with anger.

Not sadness.

Anger.

Because he sounded exactly like she remembered.

Calm.

Certain.

Like he had all the answers.

“I need you to understand something,” Thomas continued.

“The world believes I disappeared because I was defeated.””

He looked away briefly.

“That is not true.””

The video paused for a moment.

Then he continued.

“I disappeared because I discovered something that could destroy powerful people.””

Whitmore leaned closer.

Thomas looked into the camera again.

“And those people will do anything to make sure the truth stays buried.””

Olivia watched every movement.

Every expression.

She knew her father.

She knew when he was hiding something.

And he was.

“There is one person you cannot trust.””

The room became tense.

Thomas continued.

“Not because they are your enemy.””

A pause.

“Because they believe they are protecting you.””

The video ended.

No name.

No explanation.

Just darkness.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Brooks whispered:

“Who was he talking about?””

Olivia stared at the blank screen.

She did not know.

But she knew one thing.

Her father had not left her a mission.

He had left her a warning.

And somewhere in the world, someone who knew Thomas Carter was still alive had been waiting for Olivia to find it.

The next morning, a package arrived.

No sender.

No address.

Only one thing written on the front.

A name.

THOMAS CARTER.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph taken recently.

Not years ago.

Not from a file.

Recent.

The image showed a man standing outside a small cabin hidden in the mountains.

A man Olivia recognized instantly.

Her father.

Alive.

And standing beside him was someone else.

Someone Olivia knew.

Someone who had been in the room with her the entire time.

Major Ethan Brooks stared at the photograph.

And for the first time since Olivia met him, he looked afraid.

Because the person standing beside Thomas Carter was him.
