Chapter 5: The Enemy Who Knew Her Name
The underground facility was hidden beneath an abandoned training complex two hours away from the range.
No signs.
No markings.
No indication that anything important existed beneath the empty desert.
That was exactly how Thomas Carter would have wanted it.
Olivia sat across from Colonel Whitmore inside a small briefing room.
A single folder rested on the table between them.
The same folder that had changed everything.
She had not slept.
Not because she was afraid.
Because every time she closed her eyes, she saw the photograph.
Her father.
Alive.
Years after everyone told her he was gone.
“Before we continue,” Whitmore said, “there is something you need to understand.””
Olivia looked up.
“I’m listening.””
“Your father was not simply a skilled shooter.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Whitmore shook his head.
“You know the legend.””
He tapped the folder.
“You do not know the man.””
Olivia said nothing.
Whitmore continued.
“Thomas Carter was recruited because of his ability to analyze situations others overlooked. His shooting ability was only one part of it.””
“That sounds like what he wrote.””
“Yes.””
“He taught me that.””
“Exactly.””
The colonel opened a document.
“Your father discovered something during his final operation.””
“What?””
“A network.””
Olivia frowned.
“Inside the military?””
“We do not know.””
“That is a dangerous answer.””
“Yes.””
She leaned forward.
“What kind of network?””
Whitmore looked uncomfortable.
“Individuals who manipulated intelligence, operations, and personnel decisions.””
Olivia understood immediately.
People who controlled outcomes.
People who decided what information reached the right people.
People who could erase someone’s existence if necessary.
“Someone made my father disappear.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“We don’t know.””
Olivia stared at him.
“You brought me here because you need me to find out.””
Whitmore did not answer.
Again.
That silence.
She hated it.
Before she could speak, the door opened.
Major Brooks entered quickly.
His expression was serious.
“Colonel.””
Whitmore stood.
“What happened?””
“We have a problem.””
Brooks looked at Olivia.
“Someone accessed the evaluation records.””
Whitmore’s face changed.
“When?””
“Twenty minutes ago.””
“From where?””
Brooks handed him a tablet.
“Unknown.””
Olivia noticed something.
“What records?””
Brooks looked at her.
“Your records.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“My military file?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Brooks added quietly:
“Because whoever accessed them also searched one other name.””
Olivia already knew.
But she asked anyway.
“Who?””
Brooks looked at the screen.
“Thomas Carter.””
The room went still.
Someone was looking for her father.
Someone who knew he mattered.
Someone who knew Olivia existed.
The lights flickered.
Everyone noticed.
Whitmore immediately reached for his radio.
“Lock down the facility.””
The command was barely finished when the alarm sounded.
Not a fire alarm.
A security alert.
A warning.
People began moving outside the room.
Olivia stood.
“What is happening?””
Brooks looked at her.
“Someone got inside.””
That should have been impossible.
The facility was secure.
Restricted access.
Multiple security checkpoints.
Yet somehow, someone had entered.
Olivia moved with the others through the hallway.
She noticed something strange.
Everyone was looking at her.
Not the threat.
Her.
That bothered her.
“Why are they watching me?””
Brooks lowered his voice.
“Because you are the reason they came.””
The words hit hard.
Olivia stopped walking.
“What?””
Before he could answer, the lights went out.
For three seconds, the hallway disappeared into darkness.
Then emergency lighting activated.
A red glow filled the corridor.
And on the security monitor ahead, a message appeared.
Not a threat.
Not a warning.
A name.
OLIVIA CARTER.
Below it were four words.
YOU FINALLY FOUND US.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then another message appeared.
YOUR FATHER WASN’T HIDING FROM US.
A pause.
HE WAS HIDING YOU FROM US.
Olivia felt her stomach tighten.
Because whoever sent that message knew something.
Something about her.
Something about her father.
Something she had never been told.
Whitmore stared at the screen.
“This is impossible.””
Olivia looked at him.
“You know what this means.””
The colonel did not respond.
She stepped closer.
“You know.””
Finally, he admitted:
“Yes.””
“What?””
Whitmore looked at the message.
“Your father didn’t disappear because he failed.””
May you like
A pause.
“He disappeared because he succeeded.””
