The Woman He Protected / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Person Pulling The Strings Behind My Husband’s Betrayal

For a moment after Vivian's call ended, nobody spoke.

The warehouse felt colder.

Not because of the weather.

Because every person standing inside it had just realized the same thing.

The enemy we had been looking at might not be the only one.

Maybe not even the most dangerous one.

I stared at my phone screen.

Vivian's name was no longer there.

Just the empty call log.

But her voice stayed in my head.

Marcus isn't the person you should be afraid of.

I wanted to dismiss it.

I wanted to say she was lying.

Because Vivian had lied to me before.

She had stood in that hotel lobby with a smile on her face while she destroyed my life.

She had called herself the woman Marcus chose.

She had looked at me like I was already replaced.

But fear sounded different.

And Vivian had sounded terrified.

"Claire.""

Eleanor's voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

"What?""

"What exactly did she say?""

I repeated the words.

Nobody reacted immediately.

And that scared me.

Because it meant those words meant something.

Something they already understood.

Richard slowly closed the briefcase.

"Who else knows about the agreement?""

Eleanor looked away.

"Richard...""

"Who?""

Her silence answered before she did.

"There are people who have been watching the Cross family for years.""

Daniel frowned.

"Watching?""

"Waiting.""

The word made my stomach tighten.

"Waiting for what?""

Richard looked at me.

"For the right person to gain control.""

I shook my head.

"I don't understand.""

"You don't need to understand everything tonight.""

I almost laughed.

Tonight.

That was becoming everyone's favorite answer.

Not now.

Not yet.

Later.

Everyone always had a reason to keep me in the dark.

"No.""

My voice was firm.

"I do need to understand.""

Everyone looked at me.

"I spent years trusting people who told me they were protecting me while they hid the truth.""

I looked at Marcus.

He lowered his eyes.

"And I am not doing that again.""

The silence that followed felt different.

Not because they disagreed.

Because they knew I was right.

Richard nodded slowly.

"You're right.""

He opened the briefcase again.

"Then you need to know about Alexander.""

The name meant nothing to me.

But the reaction did.

Marcus immediately looked up.

"No.""

Richard didn't even look at him.

"She needs to know.""

"Richard.""

"Enough.""

For the first time, Richard's calm expression disappeared.

"You have spent years cleaning up someone else's mistakes while pretending you were in control.""

Marcus's face hardened.

"Be careful.""

Richard looked at him.

"Or what?""

The room went silent.

Because nobody had ever spoken to Marcus that way.

Not even me.

"Who is Alexander?"" I asked.

Richard answered.

"Alexander Cross.""

I frowned.

"Another family member?""

Eleanor shook her head.

"No.""

Her voice was quiet.

"The reason Marcus became who he is.""

I looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

Richard sat down.

"Alexander is Marcus's uncle.""

I waited.

"And?""

"And he was supposed to inherit Cross Industries before Marcus's father.""

I looked confused.

"Why didn't he?""

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said:

"Because he was removed.""

"Removed?""

Richard nodded.

"After the discovery of the illegal dealings, your grandfather pushed for a restructuring.""

I listened carefully.

"Alexander lost his position.""

"And he blamed your family?""

Richard looked at me.

"Yes.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"How long has he been involved?""

Richard exchanged a glance with Eleanor.

"Longer than anyone realizes.""

Marcus finally spoke.

"Stop.""

Everyone turned toward him.

His voice was low.

"You don't know what you're doing.""

I stared at him.

"That's the first honest thing you've said.""

His face tightened.

"You think this is simple?""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I think it's complicated.""

I looked at him.

"But I also think complicated problems don't require lying to your wife.""

Marcus looked away.

Richard continued.

"Alexander has spent years rebuilding his influence.""

"How?""

"Through people.""

I remembered Vivian's words.

The person controlling Marcus.

"Vivian?""

Richard nodded.

"Possibly.""

Marcus immediately reacted.

"No.""

Everyone noticed.

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Interesting.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Don't.""

"You defended her.""

"Because she isn't the problem.""

I felt something shift.

Not sympathy.

Not forgiveness.

But curiosity.

Because for the first time, Marcus wasn't defending himself.

He was defending Vivian.

"Why?"" I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

"Because she was manipulated too.""

The words surprised me.

"Manipulated?""

He nodded.

"Vivian thought she was working with me.""

A bitter smile appeared.

"But she wasn't.""

The room went quiet.

I stared at him.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"No.""

His answer was immediate.

And somehow, that honesty caught me off guard.

"I know what it looks like.""

"Because you lied.""

"Yes.""

He didn't fight it.

"I lied.""

The admission hung in the air.

"I hurt you.""

I looked at him.

"I know.""

"I made choices I shouldn't have.""

My chest tightened.

Because this was the apology I had wanted.

The apology that should have come days ago.

But now?

Now it felt different.

Too late.

Too damaged.

"What changed?"" I asked.

Marcus looked at the floor.

"Because I realized I wasn't the one making the choices.""

Daniel crossed his arms.

"You want us to believe you were a victim?""

Marcus looked at him.

"No.""

A pause.

"I want her to know the truth.""

He looked at me.

"I thought I was using Vivian.""

The words made me uncomfortable.

At least he was finally admitting something.

"I thought she wanted the same thing I wanted.""

"And what did you want?""

Marcus was quiet.

Then:

"Control.""

The honesty was almost shocking.

He continued.

"I thought if I controlled the trust, the company, the information...""

He swallowed.

"I could fix everything.""

I stared at him.

"And me?""

His eyes met mine.

"I didn't think about what it would do to you.""

There it was.

The sentence that mattered.

Not because it fixed anything.

Because it proved he finally understood.

I looked away.

I couldn't let myself soften.

Not yet.

Not after everything.

Richard pulled out another document.

"This is why we need to act quickly.""

"What is it?""

"A transfer agreement.""

My stomach tightened.

"Another one?""

"This one was prepared yesterday.""

My heart stopped.

"Yesterday?""

Richard nodded.

"Marcus planned to finalize control before you discovered the truth.""

I looked at Marcus.

"You were still trying to do it.""

He didn't deny it.

"I thought I had no choice.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

The excuse.

The idea that circumstances forced him.

But choices were still choices.

Before anyone could speak, a sound echoed outside.

A car.

Then another.

Daniel immediately moved toward the window.

"That's not good.""

"What?""

"More than one vehicle.""

Richard grabbed the documents.

Eleanor looked at Marcus.

"Did you tell anyone?""

Marcus's expression changed.

"No.""

That worried everyone.

Because if Marcus wasn't responsible...

Who was?

The warehouse door suddenly opened.

Not violently.

Slowly.

A woman walked inside.

And I knew her.

My heart stopped.

Not because I expected her.

Because I never thought I would see her here.

Vivian.

But she looked nothing like the woman from the hotel.

No designer confidence.

No perfect smile.

No arrogance.

She looked exhausted.

Afraid.

She looked like someone who had spent the night running from something.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

"Vivian.""

She looked at him.

"I'm sorry.""

Those two words shocked everyone.

Especially him.

"What are you doing here?""

She ignored him.

Her eyes moved to me.

"Claire.""

I didn't move.

"What do you want?""

She swallowed.

"The truth.""

I almost laughed.

"The truth?""

She nodded.

"Because if I don't tell you now, you won't get another chance.""

The room went silent.

Marcus looked angry.

"Vivian, leave.""

She looked at him.

"No.""

Something about her voice changed.

"I spent years being afraid of Alexander.""

Marcus froze.

There it was.

The name.

Again.

"You know about him?"" Eleanor asked.

Vivian nodded.

"He recruited me.""

My heart tightened.

"Recruited you?""

She looked at me.

"He knew Marcus cared about appearing successful. He knew Marcus was vulnerable.""

She took a shaky breath.

"And he knew I could get close to him.""

The words hurt.

Even though they weren't about me.

Because they confirmed what I feared.

Marcus and Vivian had been connected long before I knew.

"Why tell me now?"" I asked.

Vivian looked down.

"Because Alexander is done using Marcus.""

A chill moved through the room.

"What does that mean?""

She looked toward the entrance.

"He's here.""

Everyone froze.

Then the lights outside the warehouse turned on.

Through the broken windows, I saw several vehicles surrounding the building.

And standing beside them...

A man.

Older.

Confident.

Watching.

Vivian whispered:

"That's Alexander.""

Marcus went completely still.

The man entered slowly.

No urgency.

No fear.

Because unlike everyone else...

He knew exactly how this would end.

He looked around the warehouse.

At Marcus.

At Vivian.

At Eleanor.

Then finally...

At me.

A small smile appeared.

"So.""

His voice was calm.

"The last piece has finally arrived.""

My blood ran cold.

Last piece.

Not wife.

Not person.

Piece.

Alexander stepped closer.

"Claire, I've been waiting a long time to meet you.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

His smile widened.

"Because your grandfather made one mistake.""

He paused.

"He trusted the wrong family.""

The warehouse became silent.

Then Alexander said the words that changed everything.

"Your grandfather didn't leave you an inheritance.""

May you like

He looked directly at me.

"He left you a weapon."" :::
