Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden Behind The Cross Family Empire

I had spent the last few weeks watching my life collapse piece by piece.

My marriage.

My trust.

My understanding of the man I loved.

Every day brought another secret.

Another betrayal.

Another reminder that the life I thought I had built was only the version Marcus wanted me to see.

But nothing prepared me for the expression on his face when that stranger entered the warehouse.

Because Marcus Cross was never afraid.

Not when his company was failing.

Not when investors walked away.

Not when doctors told us we might never have a child.

Not even when I confronted him in that hotel lobby.

He always had an answer.

Always had a plan.

Always looked like he was ten steps ahead.

But now?

He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.

The stranger walked slowly into the warehouse.

He was probably in his sixties.

Silver hair.

A perfectly tailored suit.

A calm expression that somehow felt more intimidating than anger.

He placed the briefcase on the table.

Then looked directly at Marcus.

"You know why I'm here.""

Marcus didn't respond.

The silence said enough.

I looked at Eleanor.

She stood near the entrance, her face filled with a mixture of sadness and disappointment.

Not surprise.

She knew.

She knew who this man was.

"What is happening?"" I asked.

Nobody answered.

I stepped forward.

"No.""

My voice cut through the room.

"I'm done standing here while everyone talks around me.""

All eyes turned toward me.

"I want answers.""

The stranger looked at me.

Then at Marcus.

"She deserves them.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Don't involve her.""

The stranger almost smiled.

"Marcus, she has been involved since the day you married her.""

My heart sank.

"What does that mean?""

Marcus looked away.

The stranger opened the briefcase.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

He removed a thick folder and placed it on the table.

"Your grandfather's original agreement.""

I stared at the folder.

Again.

My family.

Again.

A history I never knew existed.

"Who are you?"" I asked.

The man looked at me.

"My name is Richard Hale.""

Eleanor spoke quietly.

"Richard was your grandfather's attorney.""

I froze.

"My grandfather's?""

Richard nodded.

"He was also the person responsible for protecting your family's investment in Cross Industries.""

I looked at Marcus.

He looked angry.

Not confused.

Angry.

"You had no right to bring her into this.""

Richard looked at him calmly.

"She was always part of this.""

I opened the folder.

The first page was old.

The paper was yellowed.

The signatures were faded.

But one name stood out.

My grandfather.

And beneath it...

A clause.

I read it twice.

Then again.

I didn't understand.

"What is this?""

Richard answered.

"A protection agreement.""

"For what?""

"For exactly what is happening now.""

The room became silent.

I looked at Marcus.

"What did you do?""

He didn't answer.

Richard did.

"Marcus violated the terms of the agreement.""

My heartbeat increased.

"What terms?""

Richard looked at the documents.

"The agreement was created because your grandfather believed wealth without accountability could destroy a company.""

He paused.

"Your grandfather trusted Marcus's father.""

I nodded slowly.

"But he didn't trust future generations.""

Richard looked at Marcus.

"Especially not those who would sacrifice people for power.""

The words hit hard.

Marcus's face darkened.

"You don't know anything about me.""

Richard looked at him.

"I know more than you think.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"What does the agreement say?""

Richard turned toward him.

"It says if a Cross family successor commits fraud, manipulation of ownership, or attempts to illegally transfer protected assets...""

He paused.

"Control returns to the original investor's family.""

My breath caught.

"Meaning?""

Richard looked at me.

"Meaning you.""

The warehouse went silent.

I stared at him.

"Me?""

"Yes.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I laughed softly.

"This makes no sense.""

"It does.""

"No, because Marcus owns everything.""

Richard looked at me.

"That's what he wanted everyone to believe.""

I looked at Marcus.

And for the first time, I understood.

The confidence.

The obsession with documents.

The pressure to sign.

The urgency.

He wasn't just trying to leave me.

He was trying to remove the only person who could stop him.

"You needed my signature.""

Marcus looked at me.

Finally.

"Claire.""

"You needed me to sign away my rights.""

His silence answered.

The pain was still there.

But now it mixed with something stronger.

Clarity.

Richard continued.

"Marcus knew the agreement existed.""

"When?""

"Years ago.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Before we got married?""

No answer.

"Before we even met?""

Still nothing.

My chest tightened.

All those years.

Was I ever a person to him?

Or just a solution?

Daniel spoke quietly.

"He married you because of this.""

The words hurt.

Even though I already suspected them.

I still wasn't ready to hear them.

Marcus immediately turned.

"Don't.""

Daniel looked at me.

"He knew your family history before you did.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Is that true?""

He didn't answer.

And that was the answer.

My eyes burned.

Seven years.

Seven years with a man who knew something important about me that I didn't even know myself.

"How?""

My voice cracked.

"How could you do that?""

Marcus stepped toward me.

"Claire, it's not what you think.""

I moved back.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

For the first time, I saw something in his face.

Not arrogance.

Not control.

Regret.

But regret was not enough.

Not anymore.

"You knew.""

His voice lowered.

"I found out after we were already together.""

"When?""

He hesitated.

"Three months after we started dating.""

The room spun.

Three months.

He knew.

For almost our entire relationship.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Marcus looked down.

"I was afraid.""

I almost laughed.

"Afraid?""

"Yes.""

"Afraid of what?""

He looked at me.

"That you would see me differently.""

The honesty surprised me.

But it came too late.

"Marcus, you built an entire plan around me without telling me.""

"I loved you.""

The words were painful.

Because a part of me still wanted to believe them.

"Did you?""

My voice shook.

"Or did you love what I represented?""

He looked hurt.

But I couldn't stop.

"You knew about my family's connection.""

"I didn't care about that.""

"Then why hide it?""

Silence.

Because there was no good answer.

Richard closed the folder.

"The issue is not only the hidden agreement.""

He looked at me.

"There is another matter.""

I turned.

"What?""

He looked at Marcus.

"Tell her.""

Marcus's expression changed.

"No.""

Richard's voice became firm.

"Tell her.""

Everyone was watching him.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

"Your grandfather didn't just invest money.""

I waited.

"He invested something else.""

"What?""

Marcus swallowed.

"Information.""

I frowned.

"What information?""

Richard answered.

"Evidence.""

"Against who?""

Nobody spoke.

Then Eleanor whispered:

"The original Cross family fortune.""

I looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

She looked devastated.

"Marcus's grandfather built part of his empire through illegal deals.""

I stared.

"What?""

Richard nodded.

"Your grandfather discovered it.""

"And that's why he created the agreement?""

"Yes.""

My mind struggled to process everything.

The Cross family wasn't just hiding business secrets.

They were hiding history.

And Marcus had spent years protecting it.

"Does Marcus know?""

Richard looked at him.

"Yes.""

My stomach tightened.

"So everything he did...""

Richard nodded.

"Was to make sure those records never became public.""

Marcus suddenly spoke.

"You don't understand.""

Everyone looked at him.

"If those records come out, thousands of people lose their jobs.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"There it is.""

"What?""

"The excuse.""

Marcus turned.

"I'm trying to protect people.""

"No.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"You're trying to protect your name.""

Marcus's anger exploded.

"Do you think I wanted any of this?""

The room went quiet.

Because that was the first time he raised his voice.

"I inherited a disaster.""

His breathing became heavier.

"My father spent years covering things up. My grandfather built everything on secrets. And when I took over, everyone expected me to fix it.""

He looked at me.

"I was trying to save the company.""

I stared at him.

"And you decided destroying me was acceptable?""

He looked away.

That was enough.

A person could have a difficult life.

A person could inherit problems.

A person could feel trapped.

But that didn't excuse choosing to hurt innocent people.

Especially the person who loved them.

Richard gathered the documents.

"Marcus, this ends tonight.""

Marcus looked at him.

"You think you can take everything from me?""

Richard shook his head.

"No.""

He looked at me.

"She decides what happens next.""

All eyes turned toward me.

And suddenly, I understood.

For years, everyone had been making choices around me.

Marcus.

Vivian.

His family.

Even people who claimed to protect me.

But now?

The choice was mine.

I looked at Marcus.

The man who had been my home.

The man who had become my enemy.

"I need to ask you one thing.""

He looked at me.

"What?""

"Was there ever a moment where you planned to tell me the truth?""

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

That hurt more than anything.

Finally, he whispered:

"I don't know.""

My eyes filled.

Because that was the truth.

Not a lie.

Not an excuse.

Just the truth.

He didn't know.

And maybe that was worse.

I stepped back.

"I think I know everything I need to know.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Claire...""

But I shook my head.

"No.""

I looked at Eleanor.

Then Daniel.

Then Richard.

"I want copies of everything.""

Richard nodded.

"You'll have them.""

"And I want a lawyer.""

"Already arranged.""

Marcus's face changed.

"You planned this?""

I looked at him.

"No.""

I took a breath.

"You did.""

The warehouse became silent.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Because everyone knew what that meant.

Another secret.

Another message.

I answered.

A woman's voice came through.

A voice I recognized immediately.

Vivian.

But she didn't sound confident anymore.

She sounded terrified.

"Claire...""

I didn't speak.

"Please listen to me.""

My eyes moved toward Marcus.

"What do you want?""

Her voice shook.

"I made a mistake.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because Vivian Cross was not a woman who admitted mistakes.

"What kind of mistake?""

A pause.

Then she whispered:

"Marcus isn't the person you should be afraid of.""

I froze.

"What are you talking about?""

Her breathing became uneven.

"Because the person controlling Marcus...""

She lowered her voice.

"...is someone you've never suspected.""

The call ended.

I slowly lowered my phone.

Everyone looked at me.

"What did she say?"" Eleanor asked.

I looked around the warehouse.

At all the secrets.

All the lies.

All the people who had been hiding pieces of the truth.

Then I answered:

"She said Marcus isn't the one in control.""

Nobody moved.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

If Marcus wasn't the mastermind...

May you like

Then someone else had been pulling the strings all along.

And that person was still out there.
