The Woman He Protected / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Trap My Husband Built Before I Ever Knew I Was Fighting

The moment Marcus stepped into the warehouse, I understood something that made my blood run cold.

He had not followed me.

He had waited for me.

There was a difference.

Following meant he was reacting.

Waiting meant he was in control.

And that was exactly how Marcus operated.

He never rushed.

He never panicked.

He simply moved pieces around the board while everyone else was still trying to understand the game.

Daniel immediately stepped in front of me.

A small gesture.

But I noticed it.

He wasn't protecting himself.

He was protecting me.

Marcus noticed too.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Still pretending you're the hero, Daniel?""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Still pretending you're not a criminal, Marcus?""

The smile disappeared from Marcus's face.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The mask slipped.

Then it returned.

"You always did have a talent for exaggeration.""

I looked between them.

The man I married.

The man who used to call me his entire world.

And the man who claimed Marcus destroyed him.

Two people who knew each other's secrets.

Two people who clearly hated each other.

But only one of them was my husband.

"How long have you known?"" I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

"Known what?""

"That I would come here.""

Silence.

That was enough.

He didn't deny it.

Daniel stepped closer.

"He's been monitoring everything.""

Marcus laughed softly.

"Careful, Daniel. You make yourself sound paranoid.""

I felt anger rise inside me.

"Is that what you did to him?""

Marcus looked at me.

"What?""

"Made everyone believe he was paranoid?""

His expression changed.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

"You should be careful who you trust, Claire.""

There it was.

The same tactic.

The same warning.

The same attempt to make me doubt myself.

I shook my head.

"No.""

Marcus frowned.

"No?""

"For years, whenever something felt wrong, you convinced me I was overreacting.""

I took a step forward.

"You made me question my own instincts.""

His jaw tightened.

"And now I know why.""

Marcus stared at me.

For the first time, he looked less confident.

Because he realized something.

I wasn't the woman who came home crying and begging for answers.

I had answers now.

Not all of them.

But enough.

Daniel picked up the folder.

"She knows about the trust.""

Marcus's eyes moved to the papers.

And that was the moment I saw fear.

Real fear.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

"You shouldn't have shown her those documents.""

Daniel smiled bitterly.

"Why?""

"Because now she knows what you tried to hide.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Claire, listen to me.""

I almost laughed.

Listen to him.

How many times had I done that?

How many times had I given him the benefit of the doubt?

I had listened when he said work was stressful.

I listened when he said Vivian was only a colleague.

I listened when he said he was protecting our future.

And every time I listened, I ignored myself.

"What exactly should I listen to?"" I asked.

"Your husband.""

The word hit me strangely.

My husband.

He still used that title like it meant something.

I looked at him.

"Do you still think you deserve that?""

His face hardened.

"You are letting strangers manipulate you.""

"Strangers?""

I pointed at Daniel.

"The man you destroyed?""

Marcus rolled his eyes.

"There it is.""

"What?""

"You hear one side of the story and suddenly you know everything.""

I stared at him.

"Then tell me your side.""

He said nothing.

"Explain the camera.""

Silence.

"Explain the forged documents.""

Silence.

"Explain the custody agreement.""

His eyes changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"You found that too.""

I laughed quietly.

"You don't even deny it anymore.""

Marcus took a slow breath.

"Claire, everything I did was to protect our child.""

My stomach tightened.

"Don't use our baby to justify what you did.""

"I'm trying to protect our family.""

"No.""

My voice became sharper.

"You're trying to protect yourself.""

Marcus looked away.

That small movement told me everything.

Daniel stepped forward.

"She knows.""

Marcus glanced at him.

"Knows what?""

"The truth.""

A strange silence filled the warehouse.

Then Marcus smiled.

Not kindly.

Not warmly.

A cold smile.

"You think you know the truth?""

I felt a chill.

"What does that mean?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Ask Daniel why he disappeared.""

Daniel's face changed.

"Don't.""

My eyes moved between them.

"Why?""

Neither answered.

"Why did you disappear?"" I asked Daniel.

He looked away.

And that was the first time I doubted him.

Not because Marcus was right.

But because everyone had been hiding something.

Everyone.

Daniel finally spoke.

"Because Marcus made sure I had no choice.""

"How?""

Marcus interrupted.

"Tell her.""

Daniel glared at him.

"Tell her how you ruined my reputation.""

"Tell her everything.""

The challenge in Marcus's voice was strange.

Like he wanted the truth told.

That confused me.

Daniel looked at me.

"My wife died three years ago.""

The warehouse became quiet.

I hadn't expected that.

"Daniel...""

"She was driving home after meeting with one of Marcus's investors.""

Marcus's expression remained unreadable.

"Don't do this.""

Daniel continued.

"The brakes failed.""

My heart dropped.

"What?""

"The investigation called it an accident.""

"But you don't believe that.""

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"No.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Are you saying Marcus caused it?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

That was important.

He wasn't making an accusation.

He was struggling with a possibility.

"I don't know.""

Marcus looked at me.

"There.""

He pointed at Daniel.

"That's what he's good at.""

"What?""

"Making people afraid.""

I looked at Marcus.

"And what are you good at?""

His expression changed.

"Claire—"

"Making people disappear?""

The silence that followed was heavy.

Marcus stepped closer.

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

"Then tell me.""

"I can't explain everything here.""

"Why?""

"Because you're emotional.""

I almost smiled.

Again.

That word.

Emotional.

The weapon people used when they wanted to avoid answering.

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I'm not emotional.""

I looked around the warehouse.

"I'm angry.""

Marcus stopped.

"I'm angry because I spent seven years believing I was loved.""

My voice broke.

"I'm angry because I trusted you.""

I touched my stomach.

"I'm angry because our child deserves better than this.""

For the first time, Marcus looked affected.

But I couldn't tell if it was guilt.

Or fear.

Then his phone rang.

He looked down.

I saw the name.

Vivian.

He ignored it.

That was interesting.

"Why isn't she calling you?"" I asked.

Marcus looked up.

"What?""

"Yesterday she was standing beside you like she owned you.""

His face darkened.

"Don't.""

"Now you won't answer her?""

Silence.

Something had changed.

Between them.

And I wanted to know what.

Daniel noticed too.

"She doesn't know everything, does she?""

Marcus looked at him.

"Stay out of this.""

Daniel laughed.

"She thinks she's getting a new life with you.""

My eyes moved to Marcus.

"What does that mean?""

No answer.

"Marcus.""

He looked at me.

"Tell me.""

For a moment, I saw something.

A crack.

The first real crack in the perfect image.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, he answered.

"Yes?""

He listened.

His face changed.

"What do you mean?""

Another pause.

Then:

"Who has it?""

My heart started racing.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

"What happened?""

He ended the call.

The confident man was gone.

Now he looked worried.

"What happened?"" I repeated.

He ignored me.

"Claire, you need to leave.""

I almost laughed.

"Now you care about my safety?""

"Listen to me.""

"No.""

My voice became cold.

"You don't get to suddenly protect me after spending months destroying me.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

"Someone else knows about the documents.""

Daniel's face went pale.

"Who?""

Marcus didn't answer.

That scared both of us.

Because whatever was happening...

Marcus was afraid.

And Marcus Cross was not a man who scared easily.

A loud crash came from outside.

Everyone froze.

Daniel moved toward the window.

Then stopped.

"What is it?""

He looked back at us.

"Someone is here.""

Marcus immediately moved toward me.

The instinct surprised me.

For one second, it looked like the old Marcus.

The man who protected me.

Then I remembered.

The old Marcus was the man I thought I knew.

Not necessarily the man standing in front of me.

The warehouse lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

I heard footsteps.

Multiple footsteps.

Daniel whispered:

"Marcus...""

No answer.

Then a voice came from the entrance.

A voice I recognized.

A voice that made my entire body freeze.

"Claire?""

Eleanor.

My heart stopped.

Because she wasn't supposed to be here.

The lights flickered back on.

And when I looked toward the entrance, I saw her standing there.

But she wasn't alone.

Beside her was a man holding a briefcase.

A man I had never met.

A man Marcus immediately recognized.

And the expression on my husband's face told me everything.

He was not afraid of Daniel.

He was not afraid of me.

He was afraid of this man.

The stranger looked directly at Marcus.

"It's time you returned what you stole.""

Marcus's face went pale.

May you like

And for the first time in my life...

I saw my husband look powerless. :::
