The Woman He Protected / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Stranger Who Knew My Husband’s Darkest Secret

I should have been afraid.

Every logical part of my mind was screaming that I was making a mistake.

A hidden camera had been found in my bedroom.

My husband had been secretly planning against me.

Someone unknown was sending me messages.

And now, I was driving to an abandoned warehouse in the middle of the night because a stranger promised to reveal the truth.

It sounded like the beginning of a disaster.

But somehow, it felt less dangerous than staying in the house where Marcus had been watching me.

That was the part that terrified me most.

The place that was supposed to protect me had become the place where I was most vulnerable.

I drove slowly through the empty streets, my hands tight around the steering wheel.

The address led me toward an old industrial area on the edge of the city.

A place I had never visited.

A place Marcus never mentioned.

The Cross family owned several properties, but most of them were hidden behind layers of paperwork and corporate names.

That was something I had learned quickly.

The richer people became, the better they got at hiding things.

When I finally reached the warehouse, I almost drove away.

The building looked abandoned.

The windows were broken.

The old metal doors were covered in rust.

A single light above the entrance flickered.

Everything about the place screamed danger.

I touched my stomach.

Our baby moved slightly.

A reminder.

I wasn't just making this choice for myself anymore.

I parked the car but didn't immediately get out.

I checked my phone.

No new messages.

I called Eleanor.

She answered immediately.

"Claire?""

"I'm here.""

Her voice changed.

"You actually went?""

"Yes.""

A long silence.

"I don't like this.""

"Neither do I.""

"Then leave.""

I looked at the warehouse.

"I can't.""

"Why?""

Because I needed the truth.

Because every answer I had received so far had been controlled by someone else.

Because I was tired of being the last person to know what was happening in my own life.

"I need to know what Marcus is hiding.""

Eleanor sighed.

"Be careful.""

"I will.""

"And Claire?""

"Yes?""

"Don't let your anger make you careless.""

I looked at the building.

"I won't.""

But deep down, I knew something.

I wasn't there because of anger.

I was there because I had finally accepted something.

The woman who waited for Marcus to tell her the truth was gone.

If I wanted answers, I had to find them myself.

I ended the call.

Then I stepped out of the car.

The cold air hit me immediately.

Every sound seemed louder.

My footsteps.

My breathing.

The wind moving through the broken windows.

I reached the entrance.

Before I could knock, the door opened.

I froze.

A man stood there.

Late forties.

Dark jacket.

Tired eyes.

He looked like someone who hadn't slept properly in years.

But I recognized him.

Not personally.

From photographs.

"Daniel?""

His expression changed.

"You know who I am.""

I swallowed.

"Marcus's former business partner.""

He nodded.

"Former everything.""

I stared at him.

"You sent the messages?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

He looked behind me.

Then back at me.

"Because Marcus destroyed my life the same way he's trying to destroy yours.""

The words hit me.

I stepped inside.

The warehouse was nothing like I expected.

It wasn't empty.

There were boxes.

Old files.

Documents stacked across a large table.

Evidence.

A lot of evidence.

Daniel closed the door behind me.

"I wasn't sure you'd come.""

"I wasn't sure I should.""

A small, bitter smile appeared on his face.

"That's how Marcus wins.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

"He makes people doubt themselves.""

I said nothing.

Because I knew exactly what he meant.

Daniel walked toward the table.

"I worked with Marcus for eleven years.""

"Eleven?""

"Before you met him.""

I frowned.

"Why didn't I know about you?""

"Because Marcus doesn't talk about people who know too much.""

That sentence sent a chill through me.

"What happened between you two?""

Daniel picked up a folder.

"Marcus built his company by convincing people he was the smartest person in every room.""

He opened the folder.

"But he didn't build it alone.""

Inside were financial documents.

Emails.

Contracts.

I recognized some of the company names.

"These are Cross Industries records.""

"Yes.""

"How did you get them?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because they were mine too.""

I waited.

"Marcus and I started the company together.""

My eyes widened.

"What?""

"Before Vivian. Before the luxury offices. Before the expensive image.""

He tapped the documents.

"We were partners.""

"Then why does everyone act like Marcus built everything?""

"Because Marcus made sure everyone forgot my name.""

I looked through the papers.

There were signatures.

Transfers.

Changes in ownership.

And then I saw it.

A familiar pattern.

A pattern I had already seen.

"These documents...""

Daniel nodded.

"Forged.""

My stomach tightened.

"Marcus forged your signature too.""

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

Because suddenly, everything connected.

The fake documents.

The hidden camera.

The custody plan.

The way Marcus moved behind people's backs.

This wasn't new.

I wasn't the first person.

"Why didn't you report him?""

Daniel laughed quietly.

A sad sound.

"I tried.""

"What happened?""

"He had already prepared.""

Of course.

"He made me look unstable. He made people believe I was angry because I lost.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Sound familiar?""

My chest tightened.

The hotel.

The scene.

The way Marcus told me I was making things worse.

The way Vivian called me embarrassing.

They had already started building a story.

A story where I was the problem.

"He's going to do the same thing to you.""

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Daniel's voice became serious.

"You need to understand something about Marcus.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"He doesn't just betray people.""

He paused.

"He studies them.""

The words disturbed me.

"What do you mean?""

"He learns what they fear.""

I thought about it.

My fears.

My weaknesses.

My need to keep my family together.

My desire to believe the best in people.

"He knew exactly how to make me trust him," I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

"That's his talent.""

I looked down.

"Why Vivian?""

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation bothered me.

"What?""

"Vivian isn't just another woman.""

I already knew that.

"But what does that mean?""

Daniel walked toward another box.

He pulled out a photograph.

He handed it to me.

My breath caught.

It was Marcus.

And Vivian.

But it wasn't recent.

It was years old.

Before I knew her name.

Before I knew she existed.

"They've known each other a long time.""

I stared at the picture.

"When was this taken?""

"Five years ago.""

Five years.

My marriage had only been two years old then.

I felt sick.

"Are you saying he was cheating for five years?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I'm saying I don't know.""

That honesty surprised me.

"But I know Vivian was involved in Marcus's plans long before you discovered her.""

Plans.

The word echoed.

"This wasn't about love.""

"No.""

"Then what was it about?""

Daniel looked at me.

"The Cross family trust.""

Again.

The trust.

The thing everyone kept mentioning.

"What is so important about that trust?""

Daniel opened another file.

Inside was a document.

My name was written at the top.

My heart stopped.

"Why is my name there?""

"Because your grandfather's investment wasn't just money.""

I looked at him.

"What was it?""

"Protection.""

I didn't understand.

Daniel continued.

"Years ago, your grandfather helped Marcus's father when Cross Industries was close to collapse.""

"Why?""

"Because they were friends.""

I stared at the document.

"And in return?""

"He created an agreement.""

"What kind of agreement?""

Daniel leaned against the table.

"One that gave your family a controlling interest if certain conditions were violated.""

I felt dizzy.

"Conditions?""

"Fraud. Theft. Mismanagement.""

I looked at him.

"And Marcus knows this.""

"Yes.""

"That's why he wants me.""

Daniel nodded.

"Not because you're his wife.""

The words hurt.

But I needed to hear them.

"Because I'm the key.""

"Exactly.""

I looked away.

For years, I thought Marcus loved me because of who I was.

Now I had to face the possibility that he loved what I represented.

Access.

Protection.

Power.

I felt tears forming.

Daniel noticed.

"Claire.""

"I'm fine.""

"No, you're not.""

I wiped my eyes.

"I spent seven years believing my husband chose me.""

My voice cracked.

"Now I'm finding out maybe he chose what I could give him.""

Daniel didn't know what to say.

Because there was no comforting lie.

Then suddenly, a sound echoed through the warehouse.

A car door closing.

Both of us froze.

Daniel's face changed.

"Someone followed you.""

My heart raced.

"What?""

He moved quickly toward the window.

"Did anyone know you were coming?""

"No.""

He looked outside.

Then whispered:

"Claire, you need to leave.""

"Who is it?""

He didn't answer.

That scared me more.

I moved toward the window.

And then I saw the car.

Black.

Luxury.

Familiar.

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that car.

I had seen it every morning.

I had watched it leave our driveway countless times.

Marcus's car.

"He followed me?""

Daniel grabbed the folder from the table.

"Not just you.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

Before he could answer, the warehouse door slammed open.

A voice filled the room.

"Claire.""

I froze.

Marcus stood in the doorway.

Not angry.

Not shouting.

Just calm.

That same terrifying calm.

The same calm he had when he told me our marriage was over.

His eyes moved from me to Daniel.

Then back to me.

And he smiled.

A smile that made my blood run cold.

"I was wondering how long it would take you to find him.""

My heart stopped.

Because in that moment, I realized something.

Marcus wasn't surprised.

He wasn't confused.

He had expected me to come here.

Which meant one thing.

May you like

This wasn't a rescue.

It was a trap. :::
