Chapter 8: The Face Behind the Mask
The frozen security footage stared back at them.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The image on the screen was unclear enough to create doubt, but clear enough to create fear.
A person entering Julian Vance’s private office.
A person using an authorized security badge.
A person who had access to places only trusted employees could enter.
Julian stared at the paused image.
His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
Because the badge number displayed on the security system belonged to someone he knew.
Someone who had worked beside him for years.
Someone whose loyalty he had never questioned.
His own executive assistant.
Emily Carter.
“No,” Julian whispered.
Daniel looked at him carefully.
“Mr. Vance…”
“No.””
Julian stepped closer to the screen.
“That can’t be Emily.””
Clara watched him.
Not because she believed Emily was guilty.
Because she recognized the reaction.
Again.
The same pattern.
Someone he trusted was questioned.
His first instinct was denial.
Not investigation.
Not evidence.
Protection.
Julian noticed her expression.
“What?””
Clara said nothing.
“What are you thinking?””
“That you’re doing it again.””
His jaw tightened.
“Doing what?””
“Trying to decide the answer before finding the truth.””
The words irritated him.
But this time, he didn’t argue.
Because he knew she was right.
He looked back at the screen.
“Emily has worked for me for six years.””
“And?””
“She helped me build this company.””
Clara nodded.
“Many people helped build this company.””
The reminder was painful.
Because Julian had spent years believing everything happened because of him.
But the truth was more complicated.
Companies were never built by one person.
They were built by hundreds.
Employees.
Partners.
Investors.
People whose names rarely appeared in headlines.
Daniel zoomed in on the footage.
“The image quality is poor.””
“Can you improve it?”” Clara asked.
“We can try.””
He worked quickly.
The room remained silent except for the sound of the keyboard.
Julian walked toward the window.
He felt trapped between two impossible realities.
If Emily was involved, then someone close to him had betrayed him.
Again.
If Emily wasn’t involved, someone had stolen her identity.
Either way, someone was close enough to hurt him.
His phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
“You still protect the wrong people.””
His expression changed.
Clara noticed.
“What is it?””
Julian showed her.
She read the message.
Then looked at him.
“They know you.””
“What?””
“They know exactly how you react.””
Julian frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means this person has been watching you.””
The sentence made the room colder.
Because Clara was right.
This wasn’t random.
The person behind everything understood their weaknesses.
They knew Julian would defend Victoria.
They knew Clara would search for evidence.
They knew their marriage had cracks.
They knew exactly where to push.
Daniel suddenly stopped typing.
“I have something.””
Everyone turned.
The image on the screen had changed.
The face was still hidden.
But the badge was clearer.
Daniel enlarged the identification number.
Then checked the database.
His expression became serious.
“What?””
Julian stepped closer.
“Whose badge is it?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then answered.
“Emily Carter.””
The room went quiet again.
Julian shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“The system confirms it.””
“Systems can be manipulated.””
“Yes.””
Clara looked at Daniel.
“Can you determine whether the badge was physically used or digitally copied?””
Daniel nodded.
“I’ll check.””
Julian looked at Clara.
“You don’t believe it’s her.””
It wasn’t a question.
Clara answered honestly.
“I believe the evidence points toward her.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“But it’s enough to investigate.””
Julian lowered his eyes.
That was fair.
He knew it was fair.
But fairness did not make it easier.
Because Emily was not just an employee.
She was one of the few people who had stayed with him during difficult years.
She had seen the company grow.
She had defended him.
She had handled his schedule.
His personal information.
His private documents.
If she was involved…
The betrayal would be enormous.
Clara noticed something.
“You trusted her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The question surprised him.
“Because she was loyal.””
Clara looked at him.
“How do you know?””
Julian paused.
Because the answer was obvious.
She had never challenged him.
She had always agreed.
She had always supported his decisions.
But suddenly, he wondered if he had confused obedience with loyalty.
The same mistake he had made with his marriage.
A knock interrupted them.
Security entered.
“Ms. Sterling.””
“Yes?””
“We found something in Mr. Vance’s office.””
Julian turned.
“What?””
The security officer held a small evidence bag.
Inside was a flash drive.
“It was hidden behind the desk.””
Daniel frowned.
“That wasn’t there during the first search.””
The officer nodded.
“Correct.””
Clara took the bag carefully.
“Did anyone enter after the incident?””
“No.””
“Then whoever left it wanted us to find it.””
Julian looked at the drive.
“What’s on it?””
“We haven’t opened it yet.””
Clara looked at Daniel.
“Use an isolated system.””
Daniel nodded.
Everyone knew better than to connect unknown devices directly.
The file opened after several minutes.
A single folder appeared.
No name.
No label.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Financial reports.
Emails.
Contracts.
And photographs.
Julian felt a knot form in his stomach.
Because the documents were not random.
They were about him.
His decisions.
His meetings.
His relationships.
Someone had been collecting information for years.
Clara opened the first file.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
Julian stepped closer.
“What is it?””
She turned the screen toward him.
The document showed a timeline.
Dates.
Events.
Transactions.
The creation of Vance Enterprises.
Julian read carefully.
Then stopped.
At the bottom was a note.
“Subject remains unaware.””
He looked at Clara.
“What does that mean?””
She did not answer immediately.
Because she understood.
The person behind this had not simply attacked them.
They had studied them.
“This person has been planning for a long time.””
Daniel scrolled through more files.
Then suddenly stopped.
“Ms. Sterling.””
“What?””
“There’s a folder with your name.””
Julian looked at Clara.
She didn’t move.
Daniel opened it.
Inside were personal documents.
Information about her background.
Her investments.
Her family.
Her history.
Julian’s expression changed.
“They were watching you too.””
Clara remained silent.
But he noticed something.
For the first time that night, she looked unsettled.
Not afraid.
But disturbed.
“What?””
She stared at one file.
“What is it?””
Clara opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
A young Clara.
A young woman standing outside a university building.
Julian frowned.
“What’s important about that?””
Clara zoomed in.
In the background was another person.
A man standing several feet away.
Watching her.
Julian looked closer.
“Do you know him?””
Clara shook her head slowly.
“No.””
But something in her expression said otherwise.
“You’re lying.””
Her eyes moved toward him.
The accusation was unexpected.
Julian immediately regretted the wording.
But Clara didn’t get angry.
She simply looked tired.
“I’ve seen him before.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“Where?””
She was silent.
Then:
“Before I met you.””
The answer changed everything.
Because this mystery was older than their marriage.
Older than Vance Enterprises.
Maybe older than Julian’s success.
“Who is he?”” Julian asked.
“I don’t know.””
“But you’ve seen him.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Clara looked at the photograph.
“During my first investment meetings.””
Julian frowned.
“Investment meetings?””
“Before I helped build your company.””
She looked at him.
“There were people who didn’t want me involved.””
“Why?””
“I was young.””
“That’s not enough.””
“No.””
Her voice lowered.
“There was another reason.””
Julian waited.
But she didn’t continue.
“Clara.””
She looked away.
“I was told to stay away from certain financial groups.””
“By who?””
Another silence.
Then:
“My father.””
The answer shocked him.
Because Clara rarely talked about her family.
Especially her father.
“What does your father have to do with this?””
Clara closed the file.
“I don’t know yet.””
Yet.
That word mattered.
Because Clara Sterling was not someone who admitted uncertainty easily.
If she didn’t know, the truth was buried deep.
Daniel interrupted.
“Ms. Sterling.””
They turned.
“There’s another file.””
“What kind?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“A recorded message.””
Julian frowned.
“From who?””
“We don’t know.””
Daniel opened it.
The screen showed static.
Then a voice appeared.
Distorted.
Altered.
Impossible to identify.
“Clara.””
The voice said her name.
Julian and Clara both froze.
“If you are watching this, then you finally understand.””
The voice continued.
“You were never supposed to find the truth.””
Clara stepped closer.
The voice became colder.
“Julian Vance was never the target.””
Julian looked confused.
“What?””
The message continued.
“He was only the door.””
The screen flickered.
Then the final words appeared:
“You should have listened when they warned you.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because the meaning was clear.
This had never been about destroying Julian.
It had never been about stealing the company.
Julian was only connected because of Clara.
The person behind this had been searching for her.
Studying her.
Waiting for her.
Julian looked at his wife.
For the first time, he saw something he had never considered.
Clara Sterling was not just a powerful businesswoman with a hidden identity.
She was someone who had been running from a past he knew nothing about.

And whatever secret she carried…
was powerful enough that someone was willing to destroy an empire to keep it buried.
