Chapter 6: The Secret Buried Beneath the Company

Julian Vance stared at the unknown message until the screen went dark.

Then he unlocked his phone and read it again.

“Ask your wife what she discovered about your company before she walked away.””

A normal person might have ignored it.

A normal person might have assumed it was a prank, a threat, or someone trying to create unnecessary chaos.

But Julian knew better.

Because whoever sent it knew about Clara.

Knew about the investigation.

Knew that she had walked away.

And most importantly…

Knew that there was something she had not told him.

Julian leaned back in his chair.

The office around him felt unfamiliar.

For years, this room had represented everything he wanted the world to believe.

Success.

Achievement.

Power.

His name was engraved on the glass door.

His photographs covered the walls.

Awards sat on shelves.

But tonight, every piece of decoration felt like a question.

How much of this was really his?

And how much had simply been borrowed from Clara?

His phone vibrated again.

Another message.

This time, a picture.

Julian opened it.

His heart stopped.

It was a photograph of a document.

An old document.

A contract.

At the bottom was a signature.

Not his.

Clara’s.

The message below read:

“She knew before you did.””

Julian immediately stood.

The chair moved backward sharply.

He looked around the empty office.

Someone was playing a game.

And he hated not knowing the rules.

He grabbed his coat and left.

Twenty minutes later, he was back at Sterling Tower.

The building was almost empty.

Only security lights remained on.

When the elevator doors opened, Natalie was still working.

She looked surprised.

“Mr. Vance?””

“I need to see Clara.””

Natalie studied his expression.

“What happened?””

“I received a message.””

That got her attention.

“What kind of message?””

Julian showed her the phone.

Natalie read it carefully.

Her expression changed slightly.

Not shock.

Recognition.

Julian noticed.

“You know something.””

Natalie looked at him.

“I know Ms. Sterling has been investigating certain issues.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Julian felt his stomach tighten.

“What does she know?””

Natalie didn’t answer.

“Please.””

The word surprised her.

Because Julian rarely said please.

Especially to employees.

Especially when he believed he was in control.

Natalie looked toward Clara’s office.

“She should tell you herself.””

“Is she here?””

“Yes.””

Julian walked toward the office.

But before he reached the door, Natalie spoke.

“Mr. Vance.””

He stopped.

“She didn’t want this to happen.””

Julian turned.

“What?””

“She didn’t want to expose anyone.””

“Why?””

Natalie looked at him.

“Because she still cared about the company.””

A painful thought crossed his mind.

The company.

Not him.

The distinction mattered.

Julian entered.

Clara was standing near the window.

She did not look surprised.

“You came back.””

Julian closed the door.

“You knew.””

Clara turned.

“Knew what?””

“That something was wrong.””

Silence.

Then Clara slowly walked back to her desk.

“Yes.””

Julian felt anger rise.

Not because she knew.

Because she knew alone.

“For how long?””

“Almost a year.””

The answer hit him.

“A year?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Clara looked at him.

“I said something.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

Julian frowned.

“When?””

“When I asked you to review the financial reports.””

He looked away.

She continued.

“When I asked why certain contracts were being rushed.””

Silence.

“When I asked why executives who had questionable records were being promoted.””

Julian remembered.

Vaguely.

Those conversations.

The moments he had dismissed.

He remembered saying:

“Clara, you worry too much.””

He remembered laughing.

“You don’t understand how business works.””

The memories felt humiliating now.

Because the person he told she didn’t understand business…

had understood it better than anyone.

“You should have told me directly,” he said quietly.

Clara looked at him.

“I did.””

“No.””

Her expression remained calm.

“You heard me.””

The difference was painful.

Julian sat down.

For once, he had no argument.

“What did you find?””

Clara was silent for several seconds.

Then she opened a drawer.

She removed a folder.

“This.””

Julian took it.

Inside were documents.

Old investment records.

Private communications.

Corporate structures.

He read carefully.

Then slowly looked up.

“What am I looking at?””

“The beginning.””

“The beginning of what?””

Clara pointed to one document.

“Vance Enterprises.””

Julian frowned.

“I know the history.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You know the version you told people.””

The sentence made him uncomfortable.

She continued.

“The real history is different.””

Julian looked back at the documents.

Eight years ago.

Before the company became successful.

Before magazines called him a genius.

Before investors trusted him.

There had been another investor.

Someone who provided the money that saved the company.

Julian searched the page.

Then stopped.

“Who is this?””

Clara did not answer immediately.

Because she knew the answer would change everything.

“The first major investor.””

Julian looked at the name.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

Clara watched him.

“You recognize it.””

He stared at the document.

A company name.

A company he remembered.

A company that had disappeared years ago.

“This can’t be right.””

“It is.””

Julian stood.

“That company failed.””

“Yes.””

“They went bankrupt.””

“Yes.””

“Then how…”

Clara looked at him.

“Because someone wanted people to believe they failed.””

The room became silent.

Julian felt a cold sensation.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying someone moved assets before the collapse.””

“Who?””

Clara looked directly at him.

“That is what I’ve been trying to find out.””

Julian looked back at the documents.

The pieces started connecting.

The missing contracts.

The fake companies.

The unauthorized transfers.

The person hiding inside the company.

But there was another question.

“Why didn’t you tell me this?””

Clara looked away.

“Because I wasn’t sure if you were involved.””

The words hurt.

Julian looked at her.

“You thought I was?””

“I didn’t know.””

“But you suspected me?””

“I suspected everyone.””

That answer was honest.

And somehow that hurt less.

Because it meant she had not singled him out.

She had simply stopped trusting anyone.

Including him.

Julian lowered his voice.

“Did you find anything about me?””

Clara hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

“What?””

“There are records.””

“What records?””

“Meetings.””

“With who?””

Clara looked at him.

“People connected to the original investor.””

Julian felt confused.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

The answer made him uneasy.

“Why?””

“Because some of those meetings happened without your knowledge.””

Julian froze.

“Someone used my identity.””

“Yes.””

The realization became darker.

Someone was not only stealing from the company.

Someone was making it look like Julian was responsible.

They were using his reputation as protection.

“They’re setting me up.””

Clara didn’t respond.

But her silence confirmed it.

Julian walked to the window.

For years, he believed his biggest problem was competition.

He never considered someone inside his own company could be destroying everything.

“Who knows about this?””

“Only a few people.””

“Who?””

“My legal team.””

“Natalie?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

Julian nodded slowly.

Then another thought came.

“Victoria?””

Clara looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

The answer surprised him.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“You think she could be involved.””

“I think anyone could be involved.””

Julian looked down.

The woman he had defended all night suddenly became a possibility.

Not a certainty.

Not a fact.

But a possibility.

And that was enough to hurt.

“Why did you come to the gala?””

Clara looked confused.

“What?””

“Everyone thinks you came to reveal yourself.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then why?””

She was quiet.

Finally, she answered.

“Because I needed the board to see me.””

Julian frowned.

“Why?””

“Because if something happened to me, I needed them to know who had authority.””

A chill moved through him.

“Something happened?””

Clara looked away.

“I received threats.””

Julian immediately turned.

“What?””

“Small ones.””

“Clara.””

“Anonymous emails. Warnings. Attempts to access private files.””

His expression changed completely.

“You never told me.””

Again.

The words.

Again.

But this time, they carried something different.

Not anger.

Fear.

Clara noticed.

“I handled it.””

“That’s not the point.””

He stepped closer.

“Someone threatened you.””

“Yes.””

“And you were alone?””

The question was almost painful.

Because he realized the answer.

She had been alone.

For months.

Maybe longer.

And he had never noticed.

Clara looked at him.

“You were busy.””

The simple statement hurt more than any accusation.

Because it was true.

He had been busy.

Busy building his image.

Busy chasing approval.

Busy enjoying attention.

While the person who loved him most was carrying a burden by herself.

Julian looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Clara didn’t respond.

Not because she didn’t hear.

Because she had heard those words before.

But this time, something was different.

This time, he meant them.

The question was whether meaning them was enough.

A sudden sound came from Clara’s computer.

Both of them turned.

An alert flashed across the screen.

Unauthorized access detected.

Clara immediately moved toward it.

“What happened?””

Natalie rushed into the room.

“Ms. Sterling, someone accessed the archive system.””

Julian looked at the screen.

“Can you trace them?””

Natalie typed quickly.

“Trying.””

The seconds felt endless.

Then the screen displayed a location.

Everyone stared.

Because the access point was not outside the company.

Not from a random hacker.

Not from an unknown location.

It came from inside Vance Enterprises.

Julian’s face hardened.

“Who?””

Natalie looked at the screen.

Then slowly answered.

“The executive floor.””

Clara’s expression changed.

Because there were only a handful of people with access.

And one of them was someone they had not yet considered.

Julian’s phone rang.

He answered.

A security officer’s voice came through.

“Mr. Vance…”

“What?””

“There’s been an incident at your office.””

Julian felt his heart sink.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone broke into your private office.””

Clara looked at him.

“What did they take?””

Julian listened.

The answer came.

“Nothing.””

A strange relief appeared.

Then disappeared when the officer continued.

“But they left something behind.””

Julian’s voice became tense.

“What?””

The security officer hesitated.

“A message.””

Julian looked at Clara.

“What message?””

The voice on the phone became quieter.

“It says…”

“‘You should have listened to your wife.’”

The room went completely silent.

Because whoever was behind this was no longer hiding.

They wanted Julian to know something.

They wanted Clara to know something.

May you like

And they wanted them both to understand one terrifying truth.

The enemy was closer than they thought.
