Chapter 12: The Person Standing Closest to the Enemy
The call ended.
But the warning remained.
“The person who betrayed both families is someone you still believe you know.””
Those words followed Clara and Julian everywhere.
Because the worst kind of enemy was never the stranger in the shadows.
It was the person who knew exactly how to stand beside you.
The person who knew your habits.
Your weaknesses.
Your secrets.
The person you trusted enough to never question.
Inside Sterling Tower, the investigation continued through the night.
No one left.
No one relaxed.
The entire company had become a battlefield where every employee, every executive, and every relationship had become a possible piece of a larger puzzle.
Julian stood alone near the window of the conference room.
The city below was bright and alive.
Millions of people were going home.
Having dinner.
Laughing with their families.
Living normal lives.
But his life had become something else.
A war hidden behind glass walls and expensive buildings.
Clara entered quietly.
“You should rest.””
Julian did not turn around.
“I don’t think I remember how.””
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she stood beside him.
A year ago, she would have comforted him.
Eight years ago, she would have held his hand.
Tonight, she simply stood there.
And somehow, that felt more meaningful.
“Are you afraid?”” Julian asked.
Clara looked at the city.
“Yes.””
The answer surprised him.
Because Clara Sterling rarely admitted fear.
“Of what?””
She was quiet.
“Finding out that everything I believed about my life was wrong.””
Julian looked at her.
“You?””
She nodded.
“My father disappeared because of secrets.””
She paused.
“My company was connected to hidden plans.””
Another pause.
“And now I discover my marriage may have been influenced by people before I even understood what was happening.””
Julian lowered his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Clara looked at him.
“For what?””
“For being part of the reason you’re dealing with this.””
The answer was honest.
Not dramatic.
Not an attempt to gain forgiveness.
Just honest.
Clara studied him.
“You’re finally seeing it.””
“What?””
“That your actions affected more than yourself.””
The words were difficult.
But he accepted them.
“Yes.””
A small silence followed.
Then Julian asked:
“Do you regret marrying me?””
Clara did not answer immediately.
That scared him more than any accusation.
Finally, she said:
“I regret losing myself in the marriage.””
Julian looked down.
“But I don’t regret every moment.””
The answer surprised him.
“Why?””
“Because before everything changed…”
She looked at him.
“You were someone I loved.””
The word hurt.
Loved.
Past tense.
But it also gave him something he thought he had lost forever.
A reason to fight.
Not for the company.
Not for his reputation.
For the person he had hurt.
Daniel entered the room.
“I found something.””
They immediately turned.
“What?””
Daniel placed several documents on the table.
“I traced the Legacy Project files.””
“And?””
“They were accessed recently.””
Clara frowned.
“By who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then looked at Julian.
“Someone with executive-level clearance.””
Julian’s expression tightened.
“Again.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel opened the access records.
A list appeared.
The names were familiar.
Senior executives.
Department heads.
Board members.
Then one name appeared.
Julian stared.
“No.””
Clara looked at him.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Because saying the name made it real.
“Victoria.””
Silence.
Natalie, who had just entered, stopped.
“The head of public relations?””
Julian nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Clara watched him carefully.
“You still want to believe she is innocent.””
It wasn’t an accusation.
It was an observation.
Julian looked at the file.
“I don’t know.””
That answer mattered.
Because before, he would have defended Victoria immediately.
Now he questioned.
Daniel continued.
“The access happened three weeks ago.””
“Before the gala?”” Clara asked.
“Yes.””
“Before the threats?””
“Yes.””
Julian frowned.
“Why would Victoria access these files?””
Nobody answered.
Because there were too many possibilities.
Maybe she was involved.
Maybe she was searching for answers.
Maybe someone forced her.
Maybe she was another victim.
Clara looked at the screen.
“Find her.””
Julian immediately looked at her.
“You think we should confront her?””
“No.””
“Then?””
“Protect her.””
Everyone looked surprised.
Julian especially.
“Why?””
“Because if she knows something, she may be in danger.””
The statement reminded him of something.
Clara had always been different.
Even after Victoria hurt her.
Even after the humiliation.
Even after seeing her with Julian at the gala.
She still chose logic over revenge.
Julian felt ashamed.
Because he knew he would not have done the same.
They located Victoria at a private apartment outside Manhattan.
When they arrived, the first thing they noticed was the door.
It was unlocked.
Julian immediately felt uneasy.
“Victoria?””
No answer.
Security entered first.
The apartment was silent.
Too silent.
The living room was untouched.
A glass of water sat on the table.
A phone charger remained plugged in.
But Victoria was gone.
Then Clara noticed something.
A piece of paper on the floor.
She picked it up.
Her face changed.
“What?””
Julian stepped closer.
The paper contained one sentence.
“Ask her why she lied about the beginning.””
Julian frowned.
“Beginning of what?””
Clara looked around the apartment.
“Her relationship with you.””
The words felt like a warning.
Julian looked confused.
“What are you saying?””
Before Clara answered, Daniel called.
“We found something.””
“What?””
“Security footage from the apartment building.””
“Send it.””
A few seconds later, the video appeared.
Victoria leaving the building.
Not alone.
Someone was with her.
A man.
Tall.
Wearing a dark coat.
Julian looked closer.
Then froze.
Because he recognized him.
“Who is that?”” Clara asked.
Julian didn’t answer.
His face had lost all color.
“Julian.””
He whispered:
“My uncle.””
The room went silent.
Richard Vance’s brother.
The man connected to the Legacy Project.
The man connected to the past.
The man who had supposedly been helping the family for decades.
Clara stared at the screen.
“Victoria was working with him?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why was she with him?””
Julian had no answer.
And that terrified him.
Because suddenly, the person he thought was the betrayal…
might only have been another piece.
Daniel zoomed in.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
The man handed Victoria a folder before they left.
A folder marked with a symbol.
Clara immediately recognized it.
Her expression changed.
“What is it?””
She pointed at the screen.
“That symbol.””
Julian looked.
“What about it?””
“It belonged to my father.””
The room became quiet.
Again.
Everything returned to the beginning.
Two families.
Two companies.
One hidden project.
One unknown enemy.
And now Victoria.
The woman Julian had publicly chosen over his wife.
The woman everyone suspected.
The woman who might know the truth.
Or might be trapped inside it.
Julian looked at Clara.
“What do we do?””
Clara stared at the footage.
Then answered:
“We stop looking for one person.””
“Why?””
“Because we’ve been thinking about this wrong.””
She turned.
“This isn’t one betrayal.””
Everyone listened.
“It’s a network.””
A dangerous thought.
Because networks were harder to destroy.
They were not built around one person.
They were built around connections.
Influence.
Fear.
Loyalty.
Money.
Clara picked up the note from Victoria’s apartment.
“Someone wants us to find Victoria.””
Julian frowned.
“Why?””
“Because they want us to blame her.””
“And you think she isn’t responsible?””
“I think someone wants us distracted.””
The answer was logical.
And terrifying.
Because every time they believed they were getting closer…
someone moved another piece.
A notification appeared on Daniel’s computer.
A new email.
No sender.
No subject.
Only one attachment.
A photograph.
Everyone gathered.
The image loaded.
And nobody spoke.
It was another old photograph.
But this time, it showed something different.
A young Clara.
A young Julian.
Their fathers.
And one more person.
Standing behind them.
The person who had taken the photograph.
The person who had been present from the beginning.
Clara leaned closer.
Her eyes widened.
“No…”
Julian looked at her.
“You know him?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Not him.””
She pointed at the photograph.
“The person standing behind us.””
Julian looked carefully.
Then he understood.
Because the person in the background was not a stranger.
It was someone they both knew.
Someone who had helped them.
Someone who had guided them.
Someone they had trusted.
Clara whispered the name.
And the entire room went silent.
May you like
Because the person behind the camera…
was the one person they never thought they would have to suspect.
