Chapter 7: The Betrayal Hidden Behind a Familiar Smile

The message remained on the screen long after the security officer ended the call.

“You should have listened to your wife.””

Four simple words.

But they carried a weight that none of them could ignore.

Julian stood completely still.

For years, he had believed he was the person who protected everyone around him.

He was the businessman.

The decision-maker.

The person people depended on.

But now, someone had entered his office, accessed confidential information, and left a message reminding him that the woman he ignored had been warning him all along.

The humiliation was almost unbearable.

Not because someone had attacked him.

Because someone had attacked him while proving Clara was right.

Natalie broke the silence.

“We need to secure all systems immediately.””

Clara nodded.

“Yes.””

She turned toward Daniel.

“Contact the cybersecurity team. Lock down every executive account.””

Daniel stood quickly.

“Should we notify the board?””

“Not yet.””

Julian looked at her.

“Why not?””

Clara met his eyes.

“Because whoever did this wants us to react emotionally.””

She walked toward the computer screen.

“They want panic. They want mistakes.””

Julian watched her carefully.

This was the first time he truly saw how she operated.

No anger.

No fear.

Only strategy.

She was not fighting because she wanted revenge.

She was fighting because she understood the consequences of losing.

The company was not just numbers.

It was employees.

Families.

People who trusted them.

Julian finally understood something.

Clara had never been obsessed with power.

She had been protecting responsibility.

A completely different thing.

“Where is my office?”” Julian asked.

Clara looked at him.

“At Vance Enterprises.””

“I’m going there.””

“I’m coming with you.””

The words surprised him.

Not because she offered.

Because months ago, he would have expected it.

Tonight, he realized he no longer deserved to expect anything from her.

They left Sterling Tower together.

Not as a husband and wife.

Not as partners.

Not yet.

They were two people connected by a problem bigger than their broken marriage.

The drive across Manhattan was quiet.

The city moved around them.

People walked beneath bright signs.

Cars passed through crowded streets.

Everyone continued living ordinary lives.

Nobody knew that inside one of the city’s biggest companies, a battle was beginning.

Julian looked out the window.

“Did you really receive threats?””

Clara glanced at him.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you hire more security?””

“I did.””

That surprised him.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t I know?””

A small silence followed.

Then Clara answered:

“Because you stopped noticing.””

The words were not meant to hurt.

That made them hurt more.

Julian looked down.

He wanted to defend himself.

He wanted to explain.

But every excuse sounded weak.

Because the truth was simple.

He had been physically present in her life while emotionally absent.

He had seen her every day.

But he had not truly seen her.

“I was a terrible husband.””

The admission came quietly.

Clara did not respond immediately.

Finally, she said:

“You were.””

Julian looked at her.

The honesty surprised him.

But he deserved it.

“And I’m sorry.””

She looked back toward the window.

“Sorry is a beginning.””

Not forgiveness.

Not acceptance.

A beginning.

Julian held onto those words.

Because for the first time, he understood that he had no right to demand more.

When they arrived at Vance Enterprises, security was already waiting.

The building looked the same.

But Julian felt different walking through it.

Every hallway reminded him of things he had ignored.

Every employee reminded him of responsibilities he had neglected.

They reached his office.

The door was still sealed.

A security officer stood nearby.

“Mr. Vance.””

“What happened?””

“We found no signs of forced entry.””

Julian frowned.

“No forced entry?””

The officer shook his head.

“Someone used authorized access.””

Clara immediately looked serious.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning whoever entered had credentials.””

Julian looked at the door.

“How many people have access?””

The officer handed him a list.

Julian read it.

His expression changed.

Executives.

Assistants.

Senior managers.

People he trusted.

People he had worked with for years.

Clara watched his reaction.

“Trust is complicated.””

Julian looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“It means people often betray the person who believes in them the most.””

The sentence stayed with him.

Because he knew exactly what that felt like.

He opened the office door.

Everything looked normal.

Almost too normal.

The desk.

The computer.

The files.

Nothing seemed disturbed.

The officer had been right.

Nothing had been stolen.

That was what made it worse.

Someone had entered simply to send a message.

Julian walked toward his desk.

Then stopped.

A small envelope sat on top.

He looked at Clara.

“Was this there before?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Julian carefully picked it up.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just one sentence.

“Ask yourself who benefits when you lose everything.””

Julian stared.

Clara took the paper.

She studied it.

“This is not about money.””

Julian looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“If someone wanted financial gain, they would steal documents.””

She placed the paper down.

“They want something else.””

“What?””

Clara looked at him.

“Control.””

The word felt heavy.

Because control had always been Julian’s greatest weakness.

He wanted to control how people saw him.

Control the narrative.

Control his image.

And someone was using that against him.

Daniel entered the room.

“We checked the security footage.””

Julian turned.

“And?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“There is a problem.””

“What problem?””

“The cameras were disabled.””

Julian frowned.

“For how long?””

“Eleven minutes.””

Clara looked at him.

“Eleven minutes is enough time.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Can you recover the footage?””

“We’re trying.””

Julian walked toward the window.

Eleven minutes.

Someone knew exactly what they were doing.

Someone planned this.

Someone who understood the building.

The systems.

The people.

His mind returned to the names.

Victoria.

Emily.

Executives.

Employees.

Family.

Everyone became a question.

His phone suddenly rang.

The name on the screen made him freeze.

Victoria.

Clara noticed.

“Answer it.””

Julian looked at her.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

He answered.

“Hello?””

Victoria sounded nervous.

“Julian.””

“What?””

“Where are you?””

“At the office.””

A pause.

“You’re with Clara.””

It wasn’t a question.

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“How do you know that?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because I saw her car leaving Sterling Tower.””

Julian felt uncomfortable.

“How?””

“I was nearby.””

“Why?””

Silence.

Then Victoria said:

“We need to talk.””

Julian looked at Clara.

She said nothing.

“About what?””

“About everything.””

Her voice lowered.

“I know what’s happening.””

Julian’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I know someone is trying to destroy Vance Enterprises.””

Clara immediately looked at him.

Julian noticed.

“How do you know?””

Victoria hesitated.

“Because I was warned too.””

The room became quiet.

Julian stepped away from the others.

“Who warned you?””

“I don’t know.””

“Victoria.””

“I’m serious.””

Her voice sounded different.

Not confident.

Not playful.

Scared.

“I received messages for weeks.””

Julian looked at Clara.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Victoria was silent.

Then:

“Because I thought it was about you.””

Julian frowned.

“What?””

“I thought you were trying to intimidate me.””

The words changed the atmosphere.

Clara watched carefully.

Julian felt confused.

“Why would I intimidate you?””

Another silence.

Then Victoria answered:

“Because of us.””

Julian closed his eyes.

The affair.

The betrayal.

The thing that had destroyed his marriage.

But Victoria continued.

“I thought Clara knew.””

Julian looked at her.

“You thought Clara was threatening you?””

“Yes.””

Clara’s expression remained unreadable.

“Why?””

Victoria’s voice became quieter.

“Because someone sent me pictures.””

“Pictures of what?””

“Me and you.””

Julian felt a chill.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer created another layer of mystery.

Someone had been watching them.

Someone knew about the affair.

Someone knew about the company.

Someone knew enough to manipulate everyone.

Julian looked at Clara.

For the first time, he realized something.

They were not dealing with one betrayal.

They were dealing with someone who had been moving pieces on a board.

And they had all been pieces.

“Where are you now?”” Julian asked.

Victoria hesitated.

“Home.””

“Stay there.””

“Julian—”

“Just stay there.””

He ended the call.

Clara looked at him.

“You believe her?””

Julian sighed.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty surprised them both.

Then he added:

“But I know one thing.””

“What?””

“Someone wants us to hate each other.””

Clara looked at him.

“And?””

“And while we were busy destroying each other…”

He looked around the office.

“They were destroying everything else.””

For a moment, there was no anger between them.

Only understanding.

A fragile moment.

A temporary alliance.

Then Daniel’s computer made a sound.

Everyone turned.

A recovered security file appeared.

Daniel opened it.

The footage loaded.

The hallway outside Julian’s office appeared.

Timestamp.

2:14 a.m.

The figure entered.

The image was blurry.

But clear enough to recognize the person’s height.

The way they walked.

The clothes they wore.

Julian moved closer.

His face changed.

“No.””

Clara looked at the screen.

The person stopped outside the office.

Turned toward the camera.

Even though the face was partially hidden, everyone knew who it resembled.

Because it was someone they never expected.

Someone who had been there from the beginning.

Someone Julian trusted completely.

Daniel whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Julian stared at the screen.

Because the person entering his office…

was wearing his own security badge.

And the badge belonged to someone who should have been protecting him.

Not destroying him.

The video paused.

The truth was still hidden.

May you like

But the danger was finally stepping into the light.

And this time, nobody could pretend they didn’t see it.
