Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in the Blood

Nobody touched the flash drive.

It sat on the dining table between them, small and ordinary, yet carrying the weight of decades of lies.

The family that once gathered around this table to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and achievements now stood around it like strangers.

Daniel stared at Adrian.

The words refused to make sense.

“Your father didn’t just hide one child.””

The sentence kept repeating in his mind.

He looked at Richard.

Then at Adrian.

Then back at Richard.

“What does that mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Daniel felt something inside him break.

“You knew.””

Richard’s eyes moved toward him.

“Daniel…”

“You knew there was something else.””

Richard looked away.

Adrian gave a bitter smile.

“Of course he knew.””

Michael looked at Adrian.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian walked slowly toward the table.

“I’m saying Richard Whitmore spent his entire life making sure nobody discovered the truth about his family.””

He picked up the flash drive.

“And tonight, that ends.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

Adrian didn’t move.

“No.””

“You have no idea what you’re playing with.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“That’s the same thing you told me when I was twenty years old.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What happened when you were twenty?””

Adrian looked at Richard.

“Ask him.””

Everyone turned.

Richard remained silent.

Daniel’s anger grew.

“Tell us.””

Richard sat down slowly.

“I found Adrian after Victoria died.””

The room became still.

Daniel noticed Eleanor’s reaction.

She already knew.

“When?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Ten years ago.””

Michael’s face changed.

“You knew where he was for ten years?””

Richard nodded.

“And you still said nothing?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Michael looked disgusted.

“How many secrets can one person keep?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“More than you think.””

Daniel felt a chill.

Because his father’s answer sounded less like regret…

And more like confession.

Adrian placed the flash drive on the table.

“When my mother died, I found letters.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Letters from Victoria?””

Adrian nodded.

“She told me everything.””

His eyes moved toward Richard.

“She told me about the affair. The money. The company.””

He paused.

“And she told me about you.””

Daniel frowned.

“Me?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

“She knew about you before you did.””

Daniel felt confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian took a breath.

“Your mother and my mother knew each other.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“What?””

Eleanor’s face turned pale.

Richard stood.

“Enough.””

Adrian ignored him.

“Twenty-eight years ago, before you were born, Victoria discovered something.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Adrian looked at him.

“That Richard wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

The words made everyone turn toward Eleanor.

She looked terrified.

“No.””

Daniel’s heart started beating faster.

“Mom?””

Eleanor looked at him.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

Richard immediately looked at her.

“Eleanor.””

But she continued.

“I wanted to tell you so many times.””

Daniel felt betrayed.

“Tell me what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“You were never supposed to find out this way.””

Daniel stepped back.

The room suddenly felt too small.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian looked at Richard.

“This is why he was afraid.””

Richard’s voice became angry.

“Stop.””

“No.””

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Because Daniel’s existence threatened everything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Why?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Because you weren’t supposed to be part of this family.””

The words cut deeper than Daniel expected.

He looked at Eleanor.

“Mom?””

She started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology was worse than silence.

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“What did you do?””

Eleanor sat down.

“I was young.””

Nobody spoke.

“I met someone before Richard.””

Daniel felt numb.

“Who?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“Your biological father.””

The room disappeared.

For several seconds, Daniel heard nothing.

Not the clock.

Not the wind outside.

Not the voices around him.

Only those words.

Your biological father.

Michael looked shocked.

Claire covered her mouth.

Richard closed his eyes.

Daniel stared at Eleanor.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“No.””

Eleanor cried.

“I should have told you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Tell me I’m misunderstanding.””

She couldn’t.

And that was the answer.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Then you’re not my father.””

Richard looked broken.

“I raised you.””

Daniel laughed painfully.

“That’s not what I asked.””

Richard had no response.

Adrian watched silently.

The anger in his face softened slightly.

Because he understood.

He had lived through the same pain.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Who was he?””

She looked down.

“I can’t.””

“Who was he?””

Her tears fell.

“James Carter.””

The name meant nothing.

But Richard reacted.

Daniel noticed.

“You know him.””

Richard said nothing.

“You know him.””

Finally, Richard whispered:

“Yes.””

Michael looked at his father.

“Who was James Carter?””

Richard’s face changed.

“Someone I destroyed.””

The room became silent.

Daniel felt sick.

“Why?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because he knew the truth.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Now you understand.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Adrian’s voice was calm.

“Your father and mine spent years destroying anyone who threatened their secrets.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“And James Carter?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Adrian did.

“He was my biological father.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Adrian nodded.

“My mother loved him before Richard entered her life.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Daniel looked between them.

“This makes no sense.””

Adrian looked at him.

“It does.””

He placed the flash drive on the table.

“Your mother and my mother were both connected to James Carter.””

Daniel stared.

“And Richard?””

Adrian smiled sadly.

“Richard knew.””

The room became silent.

“He knew James was the real father of both of us.””

Daniel felt the ground disappear beneath him.

“No.””

Adrian nodded.

“That’s why he kept us close.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Why?””

Richard finally spoke.

“Because I loved you.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.

“Love?””

His voice shook.

“You lied to me my entire life.””

Richard looked devastated.

“I protected you.””

“You stole my identity.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You let me believe I was your son.””

Richard whispered:

“You were my son.””

The words should have mattered.

Once, they would have.

But not now.

Daniel looked away.

Adrian opened the flash drive.

“I found these files after Victoria died.””

A laptop sat on Richard’s desk nearby.

Adrian connected the drive.

Documents appeared.

Old records.

Private reports.

Photographs.

And one file marked:

*CARTER PROJECT.*

Michael stared.

“What is that?””

Adrian looked at Richard.

“His biggest secret.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“What is it?””

Adrian’s expression became serious.

“It’s proof that Richard didn’t just hide our parents’ secrets.””

He clicked the file.

“He manipulated our entire lives.””

The first document opened.

Daniel read the heading.

His face slowly changed.

Because the file contained medical records.

Blood tests.

Family information.

And a shocking discovery.

Michael noticed.

“What does it say?””

Daniel couldn’t answer.

Adrian looked at everyone.

“Richard knew the truth about our bloodlines before either of us was born.””

A pause.

“He knew Daniel wasn’t his biological son.””

Another pause.

“And he knew I wasn’t his.””

The room went silent.

Richard whispered:

“Stop.””

But nobody listened.

Because the final document appeared on the screen.

A document signed by Richard himself.

A document dated twenty-eight years earlier.

And at the bottom was a sentence that destroyed everything:

*Both children must remain under my control until the truth is permanently buried.*

Daniel stared at the words.

His father had not simply hidden a secret.

He had planned their entire lives.

And now Daniel finally understood why Richard had always been so afraid.

Because the truth was never just about betrayal.

May you like

It was about control.

And Richard Whitmore was about to lose all of it.
