Chapter 6: The Son Who Was Erased

The phone call ended, but nobody moved.

The silence that followed felt heavier than any argument they had shared that night.

Richard stood in the doorway of his private office, staring at the phone in Michael’s hand.

His face had changed.

Not the controlled expression of a wealthy businessman.

Not the confident mask he wore in front of employees and strangers.

This was different.

This was the face of a man who had spent decades running from something that finally caught up with him.

Daniel watched him carefully.

“You know exactly who Adrian is.””

Richard looked at him.

“I know.””

The answer came too easily.

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

“How long?””

Richard didn’t respond.

“How long have you known about him?””

Richard looked away.

Michael stepped closer.

“I asked you a question.””

Richard sighed.

“Twenty-seven years.””

The number landed like a physical blow.

Claire covered her mouth.

“Twenty-seven years?””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Since the day he was born.””

Daniel felt anger rising inside him.

A child.

A son.

A person who had existed all this time while an entire family pretended he didn’t.

“You erased him.””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“You erased him from your life.””

Richard shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“That’s all you ever say.””

Richard looked exhausted.

“Because you think everything is simple.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I think you made everything complicated because you were afraid of the consequences.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew Daniel was right about one thing.

Richard Whitmore had spent his entire life avoiding consequences.

Michael looked at his father.

“Tell us.””

Richard stared at him.

“What?””

“The truth.””

Michael’s voice was quiet.

“But this time, all of it.””

Richard looked around the room.

At his children.

At Eleanor.

At the family he had spent decades controlling.

Then he slowly walked to his desk and sat down.

For the first time, he looked like someone preparing to confess.

“Adrian was born three months after I married Eleanor.””

The room became still.

Claire looked at her mother.

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

Daniel felt a painful twist in his chest.

His mother had lived with this secret too.

“She knew?”” Claire whispered.

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

Claire looked devastated.

“Mom…”

Eleanor wiped away tears.

“I found out after we were married.””

Michael looked between them.

“You both knew?””

Richard nodded.

“But nobody else did.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Why?””

Richard’s eyes hardened slightly.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“You thought you could control it.””

The words hit.

Richard didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

“I told Victoria I needed time.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Time?””

Richard continued.

“I wanted to provide for Adrian.””

Michael looked angry.

“But you didn’t.””

Richard looked down.

“No.””

The admission surprised everyone.

“I was afraid.””

Daniel stared.

“Of what?””

Richard’s voice became quieter.

“Of losing everything.””

The answer was almost impossible to believe.

Richard Whitmore, the man who had everything, had been afraid of losing it.

“My company was just starting,” Richard said.

“I had investors. Partners. People watching every decision I made.””

He looked at the floor.

“If the truth came out, everything would collapse.””

Michael shook his head.

“So you abandoned your own son.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Nobody expected him to admit it.

Not even Daniel.

The honesty made the moment more painful.

“Victoria wanted to leave,” Richard continued.

“She told me she would raise Adrian alone.””

Daniel asked:

“And you let her?””

Richard nodded.

“I thought it was better.””

Victoria’s voice suddenly echoed in Daniel’s memory.

The way she said Richard had buried her.

The way she looked at Eleanor.

The pain in her eyes.

“She didn’t leave because she wanted to,” Daniel said.

Richard looked at him.

“No.””

His voice became heavy.

“She left because I forced her to.””

The room froze.

Michael stared.

“What did you do?””

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“I paid her.””

Eleanor looked ashamed.

Daniel felt anger burn through him.

“You paid her to disappear.””

Richard nodded.

“I thought I was protecting everyone.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

Michael walked away.

He looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“My entire life…”

He stopped.

Then turned back.

“My entire life, I thought you were the man who built everything.””

Richard looked at him.

“I did build it.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You built a lie.””

The words hurt Richard more than Daniel’s accusations.

Because Michael had always been the son who admired him.

The son who wanted to become him.

Now that admiration was gone.

A sudden vibration came from Daniel’s phone.

Everyone looked.

He checked the screen.

Unknown number.

A message.

Daniel opened it.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Michael looked at him.

Daniel turned the phone around.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Adrian.

Standing outside the Whitmore mansion.

Taken only minutes earlier.

Under the picture were five words:

*You should have listened to me.*

Everyone became silent.

“He was here,” Claire whispered.

Richard stood immediately.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re scared.””

Richard grabbed his coat.

“He’s dangerous.””

Michael stepped in front of him.

“Dangerous?””

His voice was filled with disbelief.

“You’re worried about him being dangerous?””

Richard stopped.

Michael continued.

“After everything you did?””

Richard looked at his son.

“You don’t know what Adrian is capable of.””

Daniel noticed something.

“You’re still protecting yourself.””

Richard looked at him.

“What?””

“You’re not scared because he might hurt us.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You’re scared because he might expose you.””

Richard’s silence confirmed it.

Before anyone could continue, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the entrance.

Late twenties.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

Calm expression.

His eyes moved around the room.

Taking in every person.

Every reaction.

Daniel knew immediately.

Adrian.

Richard froze.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Adrian smiled slightly.

“That’s funny.””

He stepped inside.

“Because for twenty-seven years, nobody thought I should be anywhere.””

Eleanor started crying.

Adrian looked at her.

“Hello, Eleanor.””

Her face fell.

“You remember me?””

Adrian’s expression softened.

“I remember everything.””

Michael stared.

“You’re really him.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“The forgotten son.””

Daniel watched the man carefully.

There was anger in Adrian.

But there was something else too.

Pain.

“I didn’t come here tonight to destroy your family,” Adrian said.

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Then why are you here?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Because you still don’t understand.””

He reached into his jacket.

Everyone tensed.

But he only pulled out a small flash drive.

He placed it on the table.

“The documents Victoria took prove what you did.””

He looked at Richard.

“But they don’t prove the worst part.””

Daniel frowned.

“What worst part?””

Adrian looked around the room.

“The reason Daniel was framed.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Your father didn’t destroy your life because you found the files.””

A pause.

“He destroyed your life because you found out who was helping him.””

Richard’s face changed.

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Adrian looked directly at Richard.

“Me.””

The room went completely silent.

Michael looked confused.

“Why would you help him?””

Adrian’s eyes darkened.

“Because I thought he was my father.””

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Until I discovered the truth.””

Daniel felt the world shift.

“What truth?””

Adrian stepped closer.

“The truth that Richard Whitmore never wanted either of us to know.””

He placed the flash drive on the table.

“Your father didn’t just hide one child.””

He looked at Daniel.

“He hid the reason we were both destroyed.””

And for the first time that night…

Daniel realized the family secret was much bigger than Richard’s betrayal.

May you like

It was something that connected him and Adrian.

Something that could change everything they believed about their own lives.
