Chapter 5: The Evidence That Disappeared
The emergency lights flickered across the dining room, casting strange shadows over the walls.
For a moment, nobody understood what had happened.
The perfect family dinner had transformed into chaos.
The elegant room that once represented wealth and success now looked like the scene of a crime.
Everyone stood frozen.
Then Daniel realized something.
The envelope.
His eyes immediately moved to the center of the table.
Empty.
The documents were gone.
The photographs were gone.
Everything that could expose Richard Whitmore had disappeared.
“No.””
Daniel rushed forward.
He searched the table.
Under the plates.
Between the chairs.
Nothing.
Michael grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.””
“She took it.””
His voice was filled with disbelief.
“Victoria took it.””
Richard remained silent.
But Daniel noticed something.
His father wasn’t surprised.
He looked angry.
But not shocked.
“You knew she would do this,” Daniel said.
Richard looked at him.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You knew she was coming tonight.””
“No.””
“Then why do you look like you expected this?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Because I know Victoria.””
Daniel stared at him.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You know how to control people. That’s all you’ve ever known.””
Before Richard could answer, Michael interrupted.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Michael walked to the windows.
“I’m checking the security system.””
Richard immediately said:
“No.””
Michael stopped.
The room went quiet.
Because Richard had answered too quickly.
Michael slowly turned around.
“Why?””
Richard hesitated.
“It’s dangerous.””
Michael frowned.
“What is dangerous?””
Richard didn’t respond.
Michael’s expression changed.
“You’re hiding something again.””
“I’m trying to protect this family.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“That sentence doesn’t mean anything anymore.””
He walked toward the security panel near the hallway.
Daniel followed.
The screen was black.
“The power was cut,” Michael said.
Richard looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“Someone knew exactly where the system was.””
Michael looked at him.
“You think Dad did this?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he wasn’t sure anymore.
The more secrets they uncovered, the more complicated everything became.
Richard had lied.
He had hidden things.
He had destroyed Daniel’s life.
But had he ordered someone to attack him?
Had he arranged tonight?
Or was there another person pulling the strings?
Claire stood near the table, holding her arms around herself.
“I don’t understand.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at Richard.
“How could you keep all of this from us?””
Richard’s face softened slightly.
“Claire…”
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You made us believe we knew you.””
She looked around the room.
“But we don’t know anything.””
Eleanor quietly sat down.
“I’m sorry.””
Claire looked at her mother.
“For what?””
Eleanor struggled to speak.
“For not telling you the truth sooner.””
The room became quiet.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What truth?””
Eleanor looked at Richard.
Then at her children.
“The truth about Victoria’s child.””
Everyone froze.
Michael slowly turned.
“Child?””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
Because even after everything…
There was still more.
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.””
Claire whispered:
“What child?””
Richard’s expression changed immediately.
“Eleanor, don’t.””
But she continued.
“Victoria had a son.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel remembered the DNA report.
The one he placed on the table.
The one connected to Richard.
“So it’s true.””
Eleanor looked at him.
“Yes.””
Michael stepped backward.
“Dad has another child?””
Richard said nothing.
Michael’s face showed pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
“How long did you know?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Years.””
Michael looked at his mother.
“You knew?””
“I found out after Victoria left.””
“And you said nothing?””
Eleanor cried.
“I was afraid.””
Michael shook his head.
“Everyone was afraid.””
His voice became bitter.
“Everyone except the people who deserved to be.””
Richard walked toward him.
“Michael.””
But Michael moved away.
“Don’t.””
That one word stopped Richard.
Because Michael had never spoken to him that way.
Not once.
Daniel looked at the empty doorway where Victoria disappeared.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
“Where is he?””
Still nothing.
Finally, Eleanor spoke.
“His name is Adrian.””
Daniel felt a strange feeling.
A name.
A person.
Someone who had been hidden from them his entire life.
“Where is he now?””
Richard’s expression changed again.
And this time, Daniel saw something different.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“He’s closer than you think.””
Everyone looked at him.
Richard realized his mistake.
Too late.
Michael noticed.
“Dad.””
Richard looked away.
“Where is he?””
No answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You know.””
Richard remained silent.
“Don’t you?””
Finally, Richard spoke.
“He came to the company.””
Michael frowned.
“When?””
“A few months ago.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“And you didn’t tell anyone?””
Richard’s silence answered.
“Why?””
Richard looked exhausted.
“Because he wanted revenge.””
The words changed the room.
Claire whispered:
“Revenge?””
Richard nodded.
“He blamed me for everything.””
Daniel looked at him.
“And was he wrong?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was the first time Daniel saw his father unable to defend himself.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
A phone ringing.
Everyone turned.
The sound echoed through the dark house.
Richard’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael looked at him.
“What?””
“That phone.””
He walked slowly toward the hallway.
Daniel followed.
The ringing continued.
It was coming from Richard’s private office.
The room nobody entered.
The room Richard always kept locked.
Michael reached the door.
It was slightly open.
Daniel noticed.
“Was it open before?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Michael pushed it open.
Inside, the office looked untouched.
Bookshelves.
Leather chair.
Expensive desk.
Everything exactly where it belonged.
Except for one thing.
A phone sitting in the center of the desk.
Michael picked it up.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a voice spoke.
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
“Hello, Michael.””
Michael froze.
Daniel watched his face.
“Who is this?””
The voice laughed softly.
“You already know.””
Michael looked at Richard.
His father’s face had gone pale.
“Adrian,” Richard whispered.
The voice continued.
“Hello, Father.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel felt the entire night shift again.
The secrets.
The lies.
The hidden family member.
Everything was connected.
Michael tightened his grip on the phone.
“What do you want?””
The man on the other end answered calmly.
“I want the truth.””
Daniel stepped closer.
The voice continued.
“And I want my family back.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“No…”
Adrian’s voice became colder.
“But first, they need to know what you did.””
A pause.
Then:
“Because the documents Victoria took are only part of the story.””
The call ended.
Michael slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone stared at Richard.
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“What else did you do?””
Richard looked at his children.
May you like
For the first time in his life…
He had no answer.
