Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Perfect Smile
The accusation sat between them like a loaded weapon.
Nobody looked at the food anymore.
The carefully prepared feast had become a forgotten decoration. The turkey was getting cold. The candles burned lower. The expensive wine remained untouched.
The Whitmore family had gathered to celebrate being together.
Instead, they were watching their entire history collapse.
Richard remained seated at the head of the table.
For the first time in decades, he looked powerless.
But Daniel knew better.
A man like Richard Whitmore did not lose control easily.
Even when everything fell apart, he searched for a way to survive.
“Is that what you believe?”” Richard finally asked.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
“You’re asking me if I believe someone tried to hurt me?””
“No.””
Richard looked directly at him.
“I’m asking if you believe I ordered it.””
The room became silent.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Because that was the question he had been asking himself every day since the accident.
Did his father really do it?
Or had someone else used Richard’s name?
The evidence he found pointed in many directions.
But the person with the most to lose was sitting right in front of him.
“I believe you’re capable of hiding anything,” Daniel said.
Richard’s face hardened.
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
Michael stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at him.
Michael rarely challenged his father.
Not openly.
Not like this.
“I need someone to explain what is happening,” he said.
Richard looked at his oldest son.
“Michael.””
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
The words surprised everyone.
Especially Richard.
Michael had spent his entire life trying to become the son his father wanted.
He copied his father’s business style.
His confidence.
His way of speaking.
But now he looked at Richard like he was seeing him for the first time.
“Did you know someone attacked Daniel?””
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Michael’s face fell.
“You knew.””
“I handled it.””
“You handled it?””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“My brother almost died, and you handled it?””
Richard stood.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
“No.””
Michael’s voice cracked.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Eleanor covered her face.
The pain in the room was almost unbearable.
Daniel watched his brother carefully.
For years, he had hated Michael.
He believed Michael chose their father over him.
When Daniel was accused of stealing company files, Michael had said nothing.
When everyone turned against him, Michael stayed silent.
Daniel thought his brother had betrayed him.
But now, seeing Michael’s anger, he wondered if there was more to the story.
“What happened after I left?”” Daniel asked.
Michael looked at him.
“What?””
“After I left this house.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You knew I was innocent.””
Michael looked down.
The silence became painful.
“Michael.””
His brother closed his eyes.
“I wasn’t sure.””
Daniel felt the words hit harder than he expected.
“Not sure?””
Michael looked at him.
“Dad showed me the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“Emails. Files. Financial records.””
Daniel shook his head.
“All fake.””
“I know that now.””
Daniel froze.
“You know?””
Michael swallowed.
“I found out two years later.””
The room changed.
Daniel stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Michael looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
The answer was honest.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“Afraid of what?””
Michael’s eyes moved toward Richard.
“Of him.””
Nobody expected that.
Not even Richard.
“You were afraid of your own father?””
Michael gave a sad smile.
“You don’t know him like I do.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Then tell me.””
Michael stayed quiet.
Richard immediately stepped in.
“This is unnecessary.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“It’s the first honest conversation we’ve had in years.””
Michael walked away from the table.
He stood near the large window overlooking the backyard.
The beautiful garden outside was perfectly maintained.
Just like everything else in the Whitmore household.
Beautiful.
Controlled.
Fake.
“When I was a kid,” Michael began, “I thought Dad was the strongest man in the world.””
Richard watched him.
“He built everything himself. The company. The house. The reputation.””
Michael laughed quietly.
“But I didn’t realize something.””
He turned around.
“People who spend their entire lives controlling everything usually have the most to hide.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“Careful.””
Michael ignored him.
“Victoria wasn’t the only secret.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Michael looked toward the envelope.
“That’s why Dad was scared of those documents.””
Daniel frowned.
“You knew about Victoria?””
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“I knew there were things Dad buried.””
Richard’s voice became sharp.
“Michael.””
But Michael continued.
“Five years ago, when Daniel discovered those files, he wasn’t looking for Victoria.””
Daniel slowly turned.
“What?””
Michael looked at him.
“You were investigating the company.””
Daniel nodded.
“I found illegal transfers.””
Richard’s face changed.
Michael continued.
“You found money missing from several accounts.””
Daniel stared.
“Yes.””
“And you confronted Dad.””
“Yes.””
Michael took a breath.
“Do you know where that money went?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked at Richard.
Richard said nothing.
Michael’s voice dropped.
“It went to a private account.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Whose account?””
Michael looked at his father.
“Victoria Hale’s.””
The room exploded with silence.
Eleanor looked devastated.
Claire whispered.
“No…”
Richard slammed his hand on the table.
“That’s enough.””
Michael didn’t stop.
“You told everyone Daniel was stealing company information because he was getting close.””
Daniel stared at Richard.
“You framed me.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“No.””
“Then explain it.””
Richard opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
For years, Daniel imagined this moment.
He imagined his father admitting everything.
Begging forgiveness.
Explaining why he destroyed his son’s life.
But Richard Whitmore was not a man who apologized.
He was a man who survived.
“You don’t understand business,” Richard finally said.
Daniel almost laughed.
“Business?””
“Yes.””
Richard pointed at the papers.
“You think everything is simple. Good people. Bad people. Right and wrong.””
He shook his head.
“Real life doesn’t work that way.””
Daniel stared at him.
“No.””
His voice became cold.
“People like you say that when they want permission to hurt others.””
Richard looked away.
The room went quiet.
Then suddenly—
A sound came from outside.
A sharp crash.
Everyone turned toward the dining room windows.
The backyard was dark.
The lights along the garden path flickered.
“Did you hear that?”” Claire whispered.
Nobody answered.
Michael moved toward the window.
“Stay back,” Richard said.
Michael stopped.
The command sounded strange.
Not protective.
Afraid.
Daniel noticed.
“What are you afraid of?””
Richard didn’t respond.
Then another sound came.
A footstep.
From inside the house.
Everyone froze.
The Whitmore mansion was supposed to be locked.
The security system was supposed to be active.
Richard slowly reached for his phone.
“Who else is here?”” Daniel asked.
Nobody answered.
A shadow moved across the hallway.
Emma screamed.
Lauren immediately pulled her daughter close.
The family stood frozen as the figure stepped into the light.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone they knew.
Someone who should not have been there.
Someone Richard thought had disappeared forever.
Eleanor dropped into her chair.
Her face turned completely pale.
“Oh my God…”
Daniel stared.
Because the person standing in the doorway was the final piece of the secret.
The person connected to Victoria Hale.
The person who could destroy Richard Whitmore’s entire empire.
“Hello, Richard,” the stranger said.
Richard looked like he had seen a ghost.
May you like
“Victoria…” he whispered.
And nobody at the table was prepared for what happened next.
