Chapter 19: The Grandfather Who Was Really the Father

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was Henry's voice fading from the recording.

Thomas stood beside the table, staring at Robert.

"Say it again.""

Robert gripped his cane.

"You heard me.""

"You're my father?""

Robert looked toward the window.

"Biologically, yes.""

Thomas laughed, but there was no humor in it.

"All these years, you let me believe Henry was my father.""

"I raised you.""

"No. Henry raised me. Henry paid for my education.

Henry taught me how to ride a motorcycle. Henry sat beside my hospital bed when I was sick.""

Robert's expression remained cold.

"And I gave you the Dawson name.""

Thomas stepped closer.

"You gave me a lie.""

I watched him carefully.

For the first time, the man who had destroyed my family looked like a frightened child.

But I couldn't forget what he had done.

He had pushed Daniel down the stairs.

He had helped conceal Patricia's death.

He had stolen twenty years of my life.

And he had stood beside Henry's coffin pretending to be the grieving son of a man he had spent years betraying.

I looked at Robert.

"Did Henry know?""

Robert nodded.

"He found out when Thomas was born.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How?""

"His mother told him.""

Thomas turned sharply.

"She said Henry was my father.""

Robert shook his head.

"She lied.""

Thomas stared at him.

"Why?""

"Because she wanted Henry to marry her. She knew I wouldn't leave my wife.""

Daniel looked disgusted.

"So you allowed your own son to be raised by your brother?""

Robert corrected him.

"Half brother.""

Thomas laughed bitterly.

"Does that make it better?""

Robert ignored him.

"Henry agreed to raise you. He believed it would protect the family name.""

I looked at the recording device.

"Then why did Henry never tell Thomas?""

Robert sighed.

"Because he loved him.""

Thomas's face twisted.

"He loved me?""

"More than he loved himself.""

Thomas slammed his hand against the table.

"Then why did he leave the company to everybody else?""

Anthony opened the trust agreement.

"Because Henry finally understood what you had done.""

Thomas pointed at him.

"Stay out of this.""

Anthony didn't move.

"You're not the only person Robert manipulated. He used Henry, Patricia, Vivian, Evelyn, and every child connected to this family.""

Robert stood.

"That's enough.""

Roy moved closer.

"Sit down.""

Robert raised his cane.

"Don't give me orders.""

Roy caught the cane before Robert could swing it.

"Then don't threaten people.""

Daniel stepped toward Thomas.

"Did you know Robert was your father?""

Thomas looked at him.

"Not until three years ago.""

"Then why did you keep following his instructions?""

Thomas's face hardened.

"Because he told me the truth about Henry.""

"What truth?""

Thomas looked toward the recording device.

"Henry knew about Patricia. He knew what Robert had arranged. And he helped cover it up.""

Samuel shook his head.

"We know.""

Thomas laughed.

"No. You don't.""

He opened the briefcase again and removed a small envelope.

"This is the original birth record.""

Anthony examined it.

The document listed Robert Dawson as Thomas's biological father.

But there was another page attached.

It was a letter written by Henry.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Thomas took it and read aloud.

Thomas,

I have raised you as my own son because I chose to love you. Biology never changed that.

But there is something you must understand. Your grandfather has spent his life turning children into weapons against one another.

He did it with Anthony.

He did it with Patricia's children.

And he has done it with you.

Thomas stopped reading.

His fingers trembled.

I stepped closer.

"Your father loved you, Thomas.""

Thomas looked at me.

"Don't call him my father.""

"He raised you.""

"He lied to me!""

"And you lied to me. You lied to Daniel. You lied to Samuel. You allowed me to believe my husband hated me.""

Thomas looked away.

I continued.

"Henry made terrible choices. But he eventually tried to repair them. You spent twenty years making sure none of us could.""

Thomas's eyes filled.

For a moment, I thought he might apologize.

Instead, he turned toward Robert.

"You promised me the company.""

Robert nodded.

"And you will have it.""

Anthony laughed.

"Not anymore.""

Robert glared at him.

"The company belongs to the family.""

Anthony opened the trust agreement.

"Henry transferred the controlling shares into a protected family trust. The beneficiaries are Margaret, Daniel, Samuel, and me.""

I stared at the document.

"What about Thomas?""

Anthony hesitated.

"Henry left him a personal inheritance, but not control of the company.""

Thomas's face turned red.

"How much?""

"Enough to live comfortably. Nothing more.""

Thomas looked at Robert.

"You said everything would be mine.""

Robert said nothing.

Thomas suddenly grabbed the legal documents.

Roy caught his wrist.

"Put them down.""

Thomas struggled.

"Let go!""

The briefcase fell, scattering papers across the floor.

One of the men who had accompanied Thomas stepped forward.

But instead of helping him, he pulled a badge from his jacket.

"Thomas Dawson, I'm Detective Harris. We've been investigating the hospital records and the forged guardianship documents.""

Thomas froze.

The second man identified himself as another investigator.

Roy slowly released Thomas's wrist.

Detective Harris approached.

"We also have a warrant concerning the financial records connected to Patricia's death.""

Robert tried to stand.

"This is a private residence!""

The detective held up the warrant.

"Not anymore.""

Thomas looked toward the door.

Then he looked at me.

"Margaret, tell them I didn't mean for Daniel to fall.""

Daniel stared at him.

"You pushed me.""

"I was twelve!""

"So was I almost. I was six.""

Thomas's eyes filled.

"I was angry.""

"And I spent twenty years wondering why my mother didn't come back.""

Thomas lowered his head.

The detective placed handcuffs around his wrists.

Robert was also instructed to remain while investigators reviewed the evidence.

Evelyn stood near the fireplace, crying.

"I'll tell them everything," she whispered.

The detective turned toward her.

"Then you'll need to give a full statement.""

She nodded.

Anthony picked up the fallen recording device.

"There's still one thing we haven't answered.""

Daniel looked at him.

"What?""

Anthony pressed play again.

Henry's voice returned.

There is another document. It explains why Patricia was targeted and why Robert separated the twins.

A pause followed.

Then Henry spoke more quietly.

The twins were not separated because of money alone. One of them was born with a condition that Robert believed would make him unsuitable to inherit the company.

I looked at Daniel and Samuel.

Neither spoke.

Henry continued.

Robert believed he could control the healthier child and erase the other.

Samuel looked down.

Then Henry revealed the final part.

But the doctors made a mistake. They identified the wrong twin.

Anthony stopped the recording.

Daniel stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

Anthony slowly opened the medical folder.

"It means Robert spent thirty years trying to protect the wrong child.""

May you like

And when Anthony turned the final medical report toward us, I understood that even after all the secrets had been exposed, one last truth remained.

The child Robert had considered weak had never been the child he thought.
