Chapter 16: The Son Buried Beneath Another Name

The drive to Pennsylvania took nearly five hours.

Nobody spoke much.

Roy drove while Daniel sat beside him, studying the documents Henry had left behind. Samuel sat in the back with me, holding the original confession inside his jacket.

Evelyn followed in her own car.

Every few minutes, I looked at the photograph of Robert Dawson.

The man I had watched being buried twenty-seven years earlier was apparently still alive.

And somewhere near Pittsburgh lived another son of Henry's.

Anthony Dawson.

"Do you think Anthony knows about us?"" I finally asked.

Samuel shook his head.

"If Robert raised him, probably not.""

Daniel looked back at us.

"Then what name has he been living under?""

Nobody knew.

I unfolded Henry's handwritten statement again.

One sentence caught my attention.

Anthony was the only child who knew what happened before Patricia became pregnant.

I read it twice.

"What happened before Patricia became pregnant?""

Samuel leaned over.

"That's what we need to find out.""

Roy glanced at us.

"We're almost there.""

The estate stood behind a tall iron gate at the end of a private road.

It was an enormous stone property surrounded by trees and an immaculate lawn. A security camera followed our truck as we approached.

Roy lowered his window.

A guard stepped out of a small booth.

"Can I help you?""

"I'm here to see Robert Dawson.""

The guard looked at a clipboard.

"Mr. Dawson isn't receiving visitors.""

I leaned forward.

"Tell him Margaret Dawson is here.""

The guard looked at me.

Then he picked up his radio.

A moment later, the gate began opening.

Roy drove inside.

The house looked exactly like the kind of place Robert had always wanted: enormous, cold, and designed to make everyone feel smaller.

A woman in a gray uniform opened the front door.

"Mrs. Dawson?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"Mr. Dawson is expecting you.""

We entered a marble hallway.

Portraits covered the walls.

Among them was a photograph of Henry as a young man, standing beside an older woman.

And beside Henry stood a boy I had never seen before.

The boy was about ten years old.

He had Henry's eyes.

I stopped.

"Who is that?""

The housekeeper followed my gaze.

"That's Anthony.""

"How old is that photograph?""

"About thirty-five years.""

Before I could ask anything else, a man's voice came from the staircase.

"Margaret.""

I turned.

Robert Dawson stood at the top.

He was thinner than I remembered, with white hair and a cane. But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

He descended slowly.

"After all these years, you've finally come.""

I stared at him.

"You were supposed to be dead.""

Robert gave a faint smile.

"People believe what they're told.""

Roy stepped forward.

"Where is Anthony?""

Robert looked at him.

"Who are you?""

"Someone who doesn't appreciate men hiding behind locked gates.""

Robert ignored him.

His attention returned to me.

"You should have stayed away from this family.""

I raised Henry's confession.

"Your son told me to come.""

Robert's expression changed.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

"Henry is dead.""

"And his secrets aren't.""

Robert motioned toward the sitting room.

"Come.""

We entered a room filled with antique furniture and expensive paintings.

A silver tray sat on the table.

Robert lowered himself into an armchair.

"Now, what exactly do you want?""

I placed the photograph of Anthony in front of him.

"Who is this boy?""

Robert didn't look at it.

"You already know.""

"Tell me.""

He sighed.

"Anthony was Henry's first son.""

Daniel frowned.

"First?""

Robert nodded.

"Before Henry married you.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who was his mother?""

"Elizabeth.""

I recognized the name.

Elizabeth had been Henry's college sweetheart. He had mentioned her only once, saying she had moved away after they separated.

"Where is she?""

"Dead.""

Robert picked up a glass of water.

"She died shortly after Anthony was born.""

Samuel leaned forward.

"Then why was Anthony hidden?""

Robert looked at him.

"Because Henry was young, irresponsible, and unwilling to accept his obligations.""

I shook my head.

"That doesn't explain anything.""

Robert put down the glass.

"Anthony was born with a serious medical condition. Elizabeth's family didn't want him. Henry wanted to raise him, but I refused.""

Daniel stared.

"You refused to let your own grandson live with his father?""

"I refused to let an infant destroy my son's future.""

Roy laughed coldly.

"And you think that makes you a good father?""

Robert ignored him.

"Anthony was placed with a family I trusted. They raised him under another name. Henry visited him occasionally.""

"Did Henry know where he was?""

"Of course.""

"Did I?""

Robert looked at me.

"No.""

I felt tears gathering.

"Henry lied to me about another child.""

"He lied to everyone.""

Robert leaned forward.

"But you should understand something, Margaret. Henry wasn't the victim you imagine him to be.""

I stared at him.

"What did he do?""

Robert opened a drawer and removed a photograph.

It showed Henry standing beside Patricia.

Behind them was a hospital corridor.

Robert placed it on the table.

"Patricia was not simply a young woman Henry helped. She had been working for Elizabeth's family. She knew about Anthony. She threatened to reveal his existence unless Henry helped her.""

I frowned.

"Why would she threaten him?""

"Because she knew Henry was trying to bring Anthony back into the family.""

Samuel shook his head.

"That doesn't explain why she died.""

Robert looked at him.

"Because she discovered something else.""

"What?""

Robert slowly turned toward Daniel.

"That Daniel and Samuel were not the only children Henry had fathered.""

Daniel's face went pale.

"How many brothers do I have?""

Robert smiled faintly.

"More than your mother was ever told.""

I felt sick.

Then the housekeeper entered.

"Mr. Dawson, Anthony has arrived.""

Robert's expression changed.

"Send him in.""

A moment later, a man in his late forties walked through the doorway.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and carried himself with quiet confidence.

His eyes went directly to me.

Then to Daniel.

Then to Samuel.

He looked at the photographs scattered across the table.

Finally, he spoke.

"Which one of you found Henry's original confession?""

Samuel raised his hand.

Anthony nodded.

"Good.""

May you like

He turned toward Robert.

"Because I'm done protecting you.""
