Chapter 14: The Woman in the Hospital Room
Evelyn sank into the kitchen chair.
Nobody spoke.
The photograph remained in my hands.
The woman standing in Patricia's hospital doorway had the same face as Evelyn.
The same sharp cheekbones.
The same narrow chin.
The same distinctive eyes.
But the woman in the photograph was older.
Much older.
I looked at Evelyn.
"Your mother?""
She nodded slowly.
"My mother was a nurse.""
Samuel stared at her.
"She worked at St. Mary's?""
"Yes.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Was she there the night Patricia died?""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
"I don't know.""
Roy pointed at the photograph.
"You're looking at her.""
Evelyn began shaking her head.
"She told me she had stopped working there before I married Thomas.""
I studied her face.
"What's her name?""
Evelyn looked at me.
"Margaret, please...""
"What's her name?""
"Vivian Carter.""
Samuel suddenly stood.
"Wait.""
He walked to the metal box and removed a second document.
It was an old hospital staff directory.
He searched through the pages.
Then he stopped.
"Here.""
He placed it on the table.
The document listed Vivian Carter as the overnight charge nurse on October 14, 1987.
My stomach twisted.
"Why would a nurse enter Patricia's room after Thomas left?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I looked at her.
"Did your mother know Henry?""
She nodded.
"She knew him through the hospital.""
"Only through the hospital?""
Evelyn looked away.
That hesitation told me more than any answer.
Daniel noticed it too.
"Mrs. Dawson?""
Evelyn wiped her cheeks.
"My mother and Henry knew each other before Patricia gave birth.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"How?""
"They had been involved in a financial arrangement.""
Roy frowned.
"What kind of arrangement?""
Evelyn looked at the floor.
"My mother helped Henry conceal certain medical records. In return, he paid for my education.""
Silence.
I stared at her.
"Your mother helped him hide the truth about his children?""
"Yes.""
Samuel leaned forward.
"Did she know Patricia?""
Evelyn nodded.
"She was assigned to her room.""
"And what happened?""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"My mother told me Patricia had suffered a sudden medical crisis. She said the doctors couldn't save her.""
Daniel's voice hardened.
"That's not what the recording says.""
Evelyn looked up.
"What recording?""
"The one Samuel has.""
Samuel placed his phone on the table.
"The original conversation between Henry and Thomas.""
He opened the audio file.
A man's voice filled the kitchen.
Henry.
Older, exhausted, and trembling.
"Thomas, you have to tell them what happened.""
Thomas's younger voice answered.
"I told you. I didn't kill her.""
"Then why did you ask Vivian to change the medication chart?""
A pause.
"She knew what to do.""
Henry's voice became louder.
"She was supposed to monitor Patricia, not interfere with her treatment!""
Thomas replied coldly.
"Patricia was going to destroy us.""
I felt dizzy.
The recording continued.
Henry spoke again.
"You were a child. You should never have been involved in this.""
Thomas laughed.
"Then why did you let me?""
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Evelyn was crying openly now.
"My mother...""
Samuel stopped the audio.
"Your mother changed the medication chart?""
Evelyn nodded.
"She never told me.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Did she harm Patricia?""
Evelyn covered her face.
"I don't know.""
Roy picked up the hospital directory.
"We need to find her.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"She's alive. She lives in a care facility in Pennsylvania.""
Daniel stared at her.
"You knew she was involved and never told anyone?""
"I didn't know the details!""
"You knew she had helped Henry hide medical records.""
Evelyn began crying harder.
"I was twenty-three when she told me. She said it was a mistake. She said Henry had begged her to protect his family.""
I looked at her.
"And you believed her?""
"Yes.""
I stood.
"Then perhaps you should have asked whose family she was protecting.""
Evelyn lowered her head.
Samuel took the legal document from the envelope.
"There's something else.""
Roy turned.
"What?""
Samuel unfolded the paper.
It was a notarized statement written by Henry six months before his death.
The first paragraph confirmed that he had helped conceal the circumstances surrounding Patricia's death.
The second confirmed that Thomas had deliberately pushed Daniel down the stairs.
But the final paragraph named another person.
Vivian Carter.
And beneath her name was a statement that made my heart stop.
Vivian acted under instructions from a person who had already arranged Patricia's death before the twins were born.
I looked at the document.
"Someone planned it?""
Samuel nodded.
"That's what Henry believed.""
Daniel stared at the page.
"Who?""
I turned it over.
The final sentence was written in darker ink.
The person who ordered it was the same person who paid for Patricia's hospital stay, arranged the twins' separation, and later controlled the Dawson estate.
Roy looked at me.
"Do you recognize the name?""
I stared at the signature.
It belonged to someone I had known for decades.
Someone who had attended our wedding.
Someone who had stood beside Henry during the funeral.
I whispered the name.
"Robert Dawson.""
Thomas's grandfather.
Henry's father.
The man everyone believed had died peacefully in 1999.
May you like
But beneath the signature was one final note.
He is not dead.
