Chapter 15: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I read the sentence again.

He is not dead.

My fingers trembled so badly that the paper slipped onto the table.

Roy picked it up.

"Robert Dawson?""

Evelyn looked confused.

"Henry's father?""

I nodded.

"He died when Thomas was twelve.""

Samuel frowned.

"Are you sure?""

"I attended his funeral.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Could there have been another Robert Dawson?""

"No.""

I remembered the old man perfectly.

Robert had been a powerful businessman who controlled every member of his family through money and fear.

He had never liked me.

He had once told Henry that I was unsuitable because I came from an ordinary working family.

When Daniel was born, Robert had barely acknowledged him.

And when Henry began treating Daniel like an equal to Thomas, Robert had become furious.

I remembered one evening when Robert had visited our house.

He stood in the doorway of Henry's study and said, "A Dawson heir must be raised properly. You cannot divide a legacy between children who have no understanding of what it means.""

Henry had told him to leave.

It was one of the few times I had seen my husband openly challenge his father.

But Robert had never forgotten.

Roy placed the statement on the table.

"How did Henry know his father was alive?""

Samuel opened the envelope again.

"There are bank records.""

He removed several folded sheets.

The first showed monthly transfers from a private account.

The payments had continued for more than twenty years.

The recipient's name was hidden behind a trust company.

But one address appeared repeatedly.

A private estate outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Evelyn stared at it.

"That's where my mother lives.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

"The care facility. It's less than ten miles from that address.""

Roy studied the document.

"That's not a coincidence.""

Samuel opened another page.

It contained a photograph of an older man standing outside a large stone house.

His hair was white.

His posture was bent.

But his face was unmistakable.

Robert Dawson.

I felt the room tilt.

"He's alive.""

Daniel looked at the photograph.

"Then why did everyone believe he was dead?""

Samuel answered.

"Because Henry told everyone he had died.""

Roy shook his head.

"Why would he do that?""

I looked at the papers.

"To protect someone.""

Evelyn whispered, "Or to hide someone.""

I picked up Henry's statement.

The signature was genuine.

I had seen it thousands of times.

But the handwriting beneath it looked different.

A final note had been added by someone else.

Robert has agreed to meet the family once the original recording is recovered.

Samuel looked at me.

"Henry wanted us to meet him.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Why would we meet the man who arranged all of this?""

"Because he may know what happened to Patricia," Samuel replied.

Roy stood.

"Then we're going to Pennsylvania.""

But before anyone could move, Evelyn's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face drained of color.

"It's my mother.""

I stared at her.

"Answer it.""

Evelyn hesitated, then pressed the call button.

"Mom?""

A weak voice came through the speaker.

"Evelyn, listen carefully. You need to leave wherever you are.""

Evelyn looked at me.

"Why?""

"Because Robert knows Henry's papers have been found.""

My stomach tightened.

Evelyn switched on the speaker.

"Mom, what did you do?""

Vivian began crying.

"I did what I was told.""

"Did you hurt Patricia?""

There was a long silence.

Then Vivian whispered:

"Yes.""

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

Roy moved closer to the phone.

"Why?""

Vivian's voice trembled.

"Because Robert said Patricia was going to destroy the family.""

I felt sick.

"What did she know?""

Vivian answered immediately.

"She knew the twins weren't Henry's only children.""

Silence.

I stared at Daniel and Samuel.

"Who else?""

Vivian continued.

"Robert had another son. A child born before Henry. A child he had kept hidden for years.""

Roy frowned.

"Why would that matter?""

"Because Robert wanted the entire Dawson inheritance to pass to that boy. Henry refused. Patricia discovered the arrangement and threatened to expose it.""

Evelyn was crying.

"Mom, why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Because Robert threatened my family.""

I leaned toward the phone.

"Vivian, did Robert order Patricia's death?""

The woman began sobbing.

"Yes.""

My knees weakened.

"How?""

"He arranged for the medication to be changed. I was told it would only make her unconscious. But the dosage was wrong.""

Daniel turned away.

Samuel closed his eyes.

Vivian continued.

"I didn't know she would die.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"Where is Robert now?""

Vivian hesitated.

"He's at the estate.""

"Is he alone?""

"No.""

"Who is with him?""

Her answer came so quietly that Evelyn had to ask her to repeat it.

Then Vivian said:

"Thomas.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"Thomas has been visiting him for years. Robert never stopped controlling him.""

Roy grabbed his jacket.

"How do you know?""

Vivian answered:

"Because Thomas called me this morning. He said he had found the original confession.""

I looked at Samuel's envelope.

It was still on the table.

"That's impossible. We have it.""

Vivian began crying harder.

"Then you have the wrong one.""

I froze.

Roy slowly turned toward Samuel.

"What does she mean?""

Vivian whispered:

"Henry made two confessions. The one you have only explains what happened to Patricia.""

I stared at the papers.

"What's in the second?""

Vivian took a shaky breath.

"The truth about the child Robert hid.""

Daniel looked at Samuel.

Samuel looked at me.

Then Vivian delivered the final blow.

"Margaret, the child Robert hid wasn't Henry's brother.""

I gripped the table.

"Then whose child was he?""

Vivian whispered:

"He was your husband's son.""

The phone went silent.

And for the first time, I understood that the Dawson family had been hiding far more than one secret child.

Henry had not only fathered Daniel, Thomas, Michael, and Samuel.

There was another son.

A son Robert had kept hidden from everyone.

And according to Vivian, that boy was the only person who could prove who had really ordered Patricia's death.

Roy picked up the keys.

"Let's go to Pennsylvania.""

I looked at the photograph of Robert Dawson.

Then I looked at the four names written across Henry's old documents.

Something was missing.

One name.

One son.

And somewhere in Pennsylvania, a man who had been erased from the family was waiting to come back.

*His name was Anthony Dawson.*
