Chapter 7: The Father’s Hidden Empire

For several minutes, nobody moved.

The old Sterling Vale office remained completely silent except for the sound of rain striking the cracked windows.

Alexander Cross stared at the final page of the Black Ledger.

His father’s name was still there.

Richard Cross.

The man who had taught him his first lessons about business.

The man who told him that reputation was more valuable than money.

The man whose sudden death had forced Alexander to take control of the company before he was ready.

The man who had supposedly left behind nothing except a struggling business and a family trying to survive.

But now Ethan’s handwriting revealed something impossible.

Richard Cross was connected to everything.

Alexander slowly closed the ledger.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Alexander.””

“No.””

His voice became firmer.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

Marcus watched him carefully.

“I know.””

“You’re telling me my father built some hidden empire and never told us?””

Marcus did not answer.

Alexander turned toward him.

“You knew.””

Marcus looked down.

“Not everything.””

“But enough.””

“Yes.””

The answer cut deeper than Alexander expected.

“You knew about my father.””

Marcus nodded.

“And you said nothing.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Alexander laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

Alexander stepped closer.

“You all made decisions for me. You all decided what I could handle. What I deserved to know.””

His eyes moved toward the ledger.

“My entire life has been built on information people hid from me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could deny it.

Daniel looked at the final page again.

“Who is Richard Cross in this?””

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation answered more than words.

Alexander noticed.

“Tell us.””

Marcus looked toward the old office.

The place where Sterling Vale began.

“Your father was not the man you thought he was.””

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“Choose your next words carefully.””

Marcus continued.

“He was brilliant.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“He was also connected to people you never knew existed.””

Daniel frowned.

“What people?””

Marcus looked at the ledger.

“The Meridian Group.””

Olivia quietly whispered:

“No.””

Alexander turned.

“You know something.””

She looked trapped.

“I know enough.””

“Then talk.””

Olivia took a deep breath.

“Richard Cross worked with them.””

Alexander stared.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The word felt like a betrayal.

Another one.

Another person who had hidden the truth.

“But Ethan discovered the relationship was not what Richard claimed.””

“What does that mean?””

Olivia walked toward the desk.

“Your father believed he was partnering with powerful investors who could help expand his technology.””

She touched the ledger.

“But eventually he realized they were not investors.””

“They were owners.””

Marcus nodded.

“They didn’t invest in companies.””

He looked at Alexander.

“They invested in people.””

The room became colder.

Alexander thought about every person who had influenced his life.

Every opportunity.

Every coincidence.

Every door that opened at exactly the right time.

How many of those moments were truly his?

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“You said Ethan knew.””

“Yes.””

“And he tried to expose them?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you betray Alexander?””

Marcus looked away.

The question hit harder than expected.

Because it was the one thing he could not explain.

“I was afraid.””

Alexander stared.

“You?””

Marcus gave a small, humorless smile.

“Yes.””

The admission surprised everyone.

“Fear makes people do things they hate.””

Alexander said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“I thought if I controlled the company, I could protect it.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You destroyed it.””

“I know.””

Marcus looked at Alexander.

“And that is something I have to live with.””

Before Alexander could respond, every phone in the room vibrated.

Everyone looked down.

A message.

Same sender.

No number.

No identity.

Only words.

*You found the truth.*

Another message appeared.

*Now watch what happens when the truth finds you.*

Alexander immediately looked outside.

A black vehicle was parked across the street.

Empty.

Daniel checked the window.

“Gone.””

Marcus suddenly became alert.

“Where is Olivia?””

Everyone turned.

She was no longer beside them.

The door to the office stood open.

Alexander’s expression changed.

“No.””

They rushed into the hallway.

The building was silent.

Too silent.

“Olivia!”” Daniel shouted.

No answer.

They searched every room.

Nothing.

Then Alexander saw something on the floor.

A small piece of paper.

He picked it up.

Only three words were written.

*She knows everything.*

Daniel looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Alexander stared at the note.

For the first time, he wondered if Olivia had not been hiding from them.

Maybe she had been hiding something else.

Twenty minutes later, they found her.

Not in the building.

Not outside.

At Sterling Vale Tower.

She was standing alone in the lobby.

Waiting.

When Alexander entered, she looked relieved.

“You came.””

Alexander stopped.

“You left.””

“I had to.””

“You made us think someone took you.””

Olivia looked at Daniel.

“I needed them to believe that.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

Olivia looked around.

The lobby was filled with employees.

Too many witnesses.

Too many ears.

She lowered her voice.

“There is a room beneath this building.””

Alexander stared.

“What?””

“A secure archive.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Sterling Vale has a basement archive?””

“No.””

Olivia shook her head.

“The company doesn’t know about it.””

Alexander understood.

Someone built it before Sterling Vale became what it was.

“My father.””

Olivia nodded.

“Richard Cross created it.””

Alexander felt his anger return.

“How many secrets did he leave behind?””

Olivia looked at him.

“Enough to destroy powerful people.””

“Where is the archive?””

She looked toward the elevator.

“Below the executive floor.””

They entered the private elevator.

No security.

No cameras.

No explanation.

Just silence.

As they descended, Alexander felt something he had not felt in years.

Not fear.

Expectation.

Like he was approaching the answer to a question he had been asking his entire life.

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

Behind them was a hidden corridor.

Old.

Concrete.

Nothing like the luxury above.

At the end stood a steel door.

No handle.

No keypad.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Alexander stared.

“How do we open it?””

Olivia looked at him.

“You do.””

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard designed it that way.””

Alexander placed his hand on the scanner.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the system activated.

A green light appeared.

The door opened.

Inside was a room untouched by time.

Files filled the walls.

Old computers.

Photographs.

Documents.

A complete history of Sterling Vale.

And in the center of the room was a large screen.

It turned on automatically.

A video began playing.

A man appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Richard Cross.

Alexander froze.

His father looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, then my greatest fear has come true.””

Alexander stepped closer.

Richard continued.

“Someone has taken control of what I built.””

Daniel stared.

Olivia covered her mouth.

Marcus looked away.

Richard’s voice continued.

“Alexander, I need you to understand something.””

The screen flickered.

“I did not create Sterling Vale to build an empire.””

A pause.

“I created it because I discovered one.””

Alexander felt his heart race.

Richard continued.

“The people controlling this network have existed for decades.””

The video showed documents.

Names.

Symbols.

Connections.

Then one final image appeared.

A photograph.

Richard standing beside someone.

Someone Alexander recognized.

Someone impossible.

The person standing beside his father was not Marcus.

Not Victoria.

Not Ethan.

It was Alexander himself.

But the photograph was dated twenty years earlier.

Before Sterling Vale existed.

Before Alexander knew anything.

Before he had ever entered the world of corporate power.

Alexander stepped backward.

“That’s not possible.””

Daniel stared.

“How could you be there?””

Alexander had no answer.

Because the photograph proved one terrifying possibility.

His father had been preparing him for this entire war.

Long before Alexander knew there was a war to fight.

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

May you like

*The first betrayal was not Marcus.*

*It was the day Alexander Cross was born.*
