Chapter 4: The Secret Buried Beneath Loyalty
Olivia Bennett had always been the person everyone trusted.
That was the first thing Alexander thought as he watched her through the glass wall.
She was standing in the middle of Sterling Vale’s executive floor, surrounded by employees who depended on her decisions. She was answering questions, calming fears, and organizing legal teams with the same confidence she had shown for years.
Nothing about her looked suspicious.
Nothing about her looked like betrayal.
And that was exactly what made Alexander uncomfortable.
Marcus had been obvious in hindsight.
The ambition.
The hunger for control.
The endless need to prove himself.
But Olivia was different.
She had never fought for attention.
She had never wanted the spotlight.
She had always stood behind the scenes, solving problems nobody noticed.
The perfect person to hide a secret.
Daniel closed the office door.
“You don’t believe she’s involved.””
Alexander remained silent.
“That’s why you’re worried.””
Alexander looked at him.
“What?””
“You believed Marcus because he acted like someone who wanted power.””
Daniel pointed toward the window.
“But Olivia?””
He shook his head.
“You don’t know how to process the idea that someone loyal could betray you.””
Alexander looked away.
Because Daniel was right.
For years, Alexander had believed betrayal came from enemies.
He never imagined it could come from people sitting beside him.
“Get everything on her,” Alexander said.
Daniel nodded.
“Background?””
“Everything.””
“Personal records?””
“Yes.””
“Private communications?””
Alexander hesitated.
Only for a second.
But Daniel noticed.
“You still trust her.””
Alexander looked at him.
“I trust evidence.””
The answer sounded convincing.
But Daniel knew his brother.
Alexander was not struggling with whether Olivia was guilty.
He was struggling with whether he could survive another truth.
Two hours later, Daniel returned.
He looked exhausted.
That alone told Alexander the information was serious.
“What did you find?””
Daniel placed a file on the desk.
“I found something strange.””
Alexander opened it.
Olivia Bennett’s history was almost impossible to criticize.
Top law school.
Excellent reputation.
No scandals.
No financial problems.
No hidden businesses.
Nothing.
“She’s clean,” Alexander said.
Daniel shook his head.
“Too clean.””
Alexander looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel opened another document.
“Five years ago, right before Ethan disappeared, Olivia deleted a private account.””
“Deleted?””
“Yes.””
“What kind of account?””
Daniel turned the screen around.
“A communication archive.””
Alexander frowned.
“Why would legal counsel have a private archive?””
“That’s what I wondered.””
He opened another file.
“But the bigger question is who she was communicating with.””
The screen displayed a list of encrypted messages.
Most were impossible to access.
But one name appeared repeatedly.
E.
Alexander froze.
“Ethan.””
Daniel nodded.
“They were talking.””
“How often?””
“Almost every day for three months before the accident.””
Alexander stepped away from the desk.
That made no sense.
Olivia and Ethan had worked together.
Of course they communicated.
But every day?
Secretly?
Three months before his disappearance?
“Why didn’t I know about this?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because nobody wanted you to.””
The words were quiet.
But they carried weight.
Alexander stared at the documents.
His entire understanding of the past was beginning to collapse.
Again.
Before he could say anything, there was a knock on the door.
Olivia entered.
The timing was almost too perfect.
“Alexander.””
Her expression was serious.
“I heard about the investigation.””
He studied her carefully.
“Did you?””
Olivia stopped.
Something changed in her face.
Not fear.
Recognition.
She knew something was wrong.
“Why are you looking at me like that?””
Alexander walked around the desk.
“Five years ago, you communicated with Ethan.””
The room became silent.
Olivia’s face lost color.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Daniel noticed.
Alexander noticed.
Everyone would have noticed.
“You found out,” Olivia whispered.
Alexander stared.
“So it’s true.””
Olivia closed the door behind her.
“Where did you get those records?””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It matters.””
“No.””
Alexander’s voice became colder.
“What matters is why you hid them.””
Olivia looked at Daniel.
Then back at Alexander.
“I didn’t hide anything.””
“You deleted the archive.””
Her eyes changed.
Only for a moment.
But Alexander saw it.
She was no longer defending herself.
She was calculating.
“I protected him.””
Alexander froze.
“Who?””
Olivia looked toward the window.
“Ethan.””
The name felt impossible.
Like a ghost standing in the room.
“What happened that night?”” Alexander asked.
Olivia did not answer.
“Olivia.””
She took a deep breath.
“You think Marcus betrayed you.””
Alexander said nothing.
“He did.””
The direct answer surprised him.
“But he wasn’t the beginning.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What are you saying?””
Olivia looked at both brothers.
“I’m saying Sterling Vale’s problems started long before Marcus.””
The room felt smaller.
“Five years ago,” she continued, “Ethan discovered someone was manipulating the company.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“After hiding everything?””
Olivia looked at him.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
The words stopped him.
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Olivia walked toward the desk.
“Ethan found financial connections between Sterling Vale and several outside organizations. He believed someone was slowly taking control of the company.””
“Hale Capital,” Alexander said.
Olivia’s eyes widened.
“You know.””
“Yes.””
She looked worried.
“Then you’re already deeper into this than I thought.””
Alexander studied her.
“Tell me everything.””
Olivia looked down.
“I can’t.””
Daniel immediately reacted.
“Can’t or won’t?””
Olivia ignored him.
“Because Ethan made me promise.””
Alexander laughed once.
A humorless sound.
“Five years.””
He shook his head.
“Five years of letting everyone believe Daniel was responsible. Five years of letting me think Ethan was dead.””
“I had no choice.””
“Everyone says that.””
His voice became louder.
“Marcus said he had no choice.””
Olivia looked hurt.
“Don’t compare me to him.””
“Then prove you’re different.””
The words landed.
For a moment, Olivia looked like she wanted to say everything.
But something stopped her.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not the fear of losing a job.
Not the fear of losing reputation.
Something much deeper.
“They are watching,” she whispered.
Alexander frowned.
“Who?””
Olivia looked at the security cameras in the corner.
Then at the windows.
Then back at him.
“Everyone.””
Daniel immediately checked the cameras.
“What are you doing?””
“Making sure this room is secure.””
Olivia shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
She lowered her voice.
“Security is part of the problem.””
Nobody moved.
Alexander stared.
“You’re saying someone inside the company controls security?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Olivia hesitated.
Then said:
“The person who helped fake Ethan’s death.””
The room went silent.
Alexander felt the ground beneath him shift.
Because that meant one thing.
Ethan had not disappeared.
He had been removed.
Someone had planned it.
Someone had covered it.
Someone powerful enough to erase a person from the world.
Daniel looked at Alexander.
“What do we do?””
Alexander looked at Olivia.
For years, he had believed his enemies were outside the company.
Now he was surrounded by unanswered questions.
Marcus.
Victoria Hale.
Olivia.
Ethan.
And a mystery that started before Sterling Vale became an empire.
“Where is Ethan now?”” Alexander asked.
Olivia looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“Then why contact him?””
“I didn’t.””
Alexander frowned.
“Then who called me?””
Olivia went silent.
That answer frightened her more than anything else.
Because she knew.
Someone else had Ethan’s information.
Someone else wanted Alexander searching.
Suddenly, every screen inside the office turned black.
The lights flickered.
Daniel immediately stepped toward the security panel.
“What’s happening?””
A message appeared on every monitor.
One sentence.
No name.
No explanation.
Only five words.
*You were never the target.*
Alexander stared at the screens.
Then another line appeared.
*You were the bait.*
The monitors went dark.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in the room understood the same thing.
This entire war had been carefully designed.
Marcus was not leading it.
Victoria was not leading it.
They were pieces.
And Alexander Cross had finally discovered the terrifying truth.
The person who wanted Sterling Vale was never trying to destroy his company.
They were trying to force him to uncover something hidden five years ago.
May you like
Something Ethan died trying to reveal.
And now Alexander was walking directly toward it.
