Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The message remained on every screen for exactly ten seconds.

Then it vanished.

No warning.

No explanation.

No trace.

Just darkness.

The silence that followed felt heavier than any accusation Alexander Cross had ever faced.

For years, he had built his entire life around controlling uncertainty.

Business was simple.

Numbers either worked or they did not.

Contracts either protected you or they failed you.

People either stood beside you or betrayed you.

But this was different.

This was a war fought in shadows.

And the most frightening part was that Alexander no longer knew who had been fighting him.

Daniel moved quickly.

He checked the security system, the network connections, and every access point inside the office.

Nothing.

“No external breach,” Daniel said.

Alexander looked at him.

“What?””

“That message didn’t come from outside.””

The room became still.

Olivia’s expression changed.

“You’re sure?””

Daniel nodded.

“It came through Sterling Vale’s internal system.””

Alexander slowly turned toward the security cameras.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning whoever sent it already had access.””

Olivia whispered:

“They’re inside.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew what that meant.

The person hunting them was not watching Sterling Vale from a distance.

They were walking through the same hallways.

Using the same elevators.

Sitting in the same meetings.

Alexander looked at Olivia.

“How long have you known?””

She looked down.

“Not enough.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Olivia swallowed.

“Ethan believed someone inside the company was helping an outside organization gain control.””

“Marcus.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Alexander paused.

Olivia continued.

“Marcus was involved. But Ethan never believed Marcus was smart enough to create the entire operation.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“So who was?””

Olivia did not answer.

That was the problem.

Every conversation seemed to lead to the same place.

A name nobody wanted to say.

A person nobody could identify.

Alexander walked toward the window.

Five years ago, Sterling Vale was a company full of ambition.

Now it felt like a building full of ghosts.

“What did Ethan find?”” Alexander asked.

Olivia looked at him.

“He found a pattern.””

“What kind of pattern?””

“Companies that appeared to fail before being purchased by specific investment groups.””

Daniel understood.

“Controlled collapses.””

Olivia nodded.

“Exactly.””

Alexander stared at the city.

“Hale Capital.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t Ethan expose them?””

Olivia’s eyes became distant.

“Because he realized they had people everywhere.””

“In government?””

“Maybe.””

“In finance?””

“Yes.””

“In Sterling Vale?””

Olivia looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

But devastating.

Alexander closed his eyes.

For years, he had believed his company was attacked by one person.

Now he understood.

The betrayal was deeper.

Older.

More organized.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

Alexander answered.

No one spoke.

Then a voice came through.

A voice he knew.

“Alexander.””

His heart stopped.

Again.

“Ethan?””

Daniel stepped closer.

Olivia covered her mouth.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Ethan spoke.

“You shouldn’t trust anyone in that room.””

Alexander looked around.

At Daniel.

At Olivia.

At the empty office.

“What do you mean?””

“You heard me.””

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“I can’t tell you.””

“Five years, Ethan.””

Alexander’s voice cracked slightly.

Five years of anger.

Five years of grief.

Five years of believing his brother was gone.

“You let us bury you.””

“I know.””

“You let everyone believe you were dead.””

“I had to.””

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You wanted to.””

The silence on the phone said more than words.

Ethan finally spoke.

“You’re right.””

Alexander froze.

“I wanted to come back.””

A pause.

“But I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if they knew I survived, they would finish what they started.””

Daniel looked at Alexander.

“Who are they?””

Ethan heard him.

“Daniel.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew I was innocent.””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell him?””

“I tried.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

“I tried to contact Alexander after the accident.””

Alexander stared.

“What happened?””

Ethan’s voice became quieter.

“Someone intercepted my messages.””

The room went silent.

“My calls.””

Another pause.

“My evidence.””

Alexander felt anger rising.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

The answer was honest.

And that scared Alexander more.

Because Ethan was not someone who admitted uncertainty easily.

“Where are you?”” Alexander asked again.

“I need you to do something first.””

Alexander almost laughed.

“You disappear for five years and call me with instructions?””

“I’m trying to keep you alive.””

The words were familiar.

Too familiar.

Everyone claimed they were protecting him.

Marcus.

Olivia.

Now Ethan.

Alexander had heard enough.

“Tell me where you are.””

“I can’t.””

“Then tell me what you want.””

Ethan was silent.

Then:

“Find the Black Ledger.””

Daniel immediately looked at Alexander.

“What is that?””

Ethan continued.

“It contains every transaction, every agreement, every person connected to the operation.””

“Where is it?””

“You already have it.””

Alexander frowned.

“No, I don’t.””

“Yes, you do.””

The line became distorted.

“Look where everything started.””

Then the call ended.

Alexander stared at the phone.

Daniel immediately searched.

“What does ‘where everything started’ mean?””

Olivia answered softly.

“The first office.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Our old building?””

She nodded.

“Ethan hid things there.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because I didn’t know.””

Alexander grabbed his coat.

“Then we go there.””

Daniel followed.

Olivia stopped them.

“You can’t.””

Alexander turned.

“Why?””

“Because if Ethan is right, someone is waiting for you to find it.””

Alexander stared.

“That’s the point.””

“What?””

“If someone wants me to stop looking, I need them to try.””

Daniel understood immediately.

“You’re using yourself as bait.””

Alexander looked at him.

“No.””

He picked up his keys.

“I’m making them reveal themselves.””

Two hours later, the three of them arrived at the old Sterling Vale headquarters.

The building looked nothing like the empire they had created.

It was smaller.

Older.

Forgotten.

The sign outside had been removed years ago.

But Alexander still remembered everything.

The first office.

The first employee.

The first impossible dream.

They entered through a side door.

The building was empty.

Too empty.

Daniel looked around.

“Does this feel wrong to you?””

“Yes.””

Olivia nodded.

“Someone has been here.””

They reached the old executive room.

The place where Sterling Vale began.

Alexander walked toward the wall behind the original founder’s desk.

He remembered Ethan’s words.

Look where everything started.

He touched the wall.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something.

A small crack behind an old framed photograph.

He removed the frame.

Inside was a hidden compartment.

Daniel stared.

“Ethan.””

Alexander opened it.

Inside was a black leather notebook.

No title.

No markings.

Just a single symbol engraved on the cover.

A circle divided by a line.

Olivia stepped back.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She whispered:

“That symbol.””

Alexander looked at her.

“You know it?””

“Yes.””

“Who does it belong to?””

Olivia looked terrified.

“Not who.””

She stared at the notebook.

“What.””

Alexander opened the cover.

The first page contained one sentence.

Written in Ethan’s handwriting.

*If you are reading this, they know I failed to stop them.*

Below it was a list of names.

The first name made Alexander’s blood run cold.

The second name made Daniel step backward.

The third name made Olivia whisper:

“No…”

Because the list did not contain enemies.

It contained people they trusted.

People who built Sterling Vale.

People who shaped their lives.

And at the bottom of the page was one final warning.

*The person who betrayed us is not trying to take the company.*

Alexander turned the page.

The rest of the sentence appeared.

*They are trying to erase everyone who knows why it was created.*

Outside the old building, a black vehicle stopped across the street.

Inside sat Marcus Whitmore.

He watched the lights turn on upstairs.

And for the first time in years, he looked genuinely afraid.

Because he knew what Alexander had found.

The Black Ledger.

The one thing that could destroy everyone.

Including the person Marcus had always feared more than Alexander.

The person who started the entire game.

May you like

The person who was still watching.

And waiting.
