Chapter 6: The Name Hidden at the Bottom of the Ledger

The old Sterling Vale headquarters had been abandoned for years.

But that night, it felt alive.

The empty hallways carried echoes of the past. Every step Alexander Cross took reminded him of the company before the billions, before the skyscrapers, before the endless attention.

Back when Sterling Vale was just an idea.

Back when trust meant something.

The Black Ledger rested on the old wooden desk where Alexander had signed his first business contract.

Five years of secrets.

Five years of betrayal.

Five years of unanswered questions.

All contained inside a small black notebook.

Daniel stood beside him, staring at the pages.

“We need to be careful.””

Alexander did not look up.

“With what?””

“Everything.””

Daniel pointed toward the ledger.

“If Ethan hid this, he didn’t do it because it was ordinary information.””

Alexander slowly turned the page.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Ethan’s.

The brother who had taught him how to negotiate.

The brother who had challenged every decision he made.

The brother who had supposedly died.

Every page contained dates, names, and connections.

Companies.

Investors.

Executives.

Politicians.

People who had quietly influenced decisions across industries.

But Alexander noticed something strange.

The ledger did not accuse everyone listed.

Some names had notes beside them.

Some were marked as threats.

Others were marked as protected.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Ethan was tracking people.””

“No,” Alexander said.

He studied the handwriting.

“He was separating them.””

“From what?””

Alexander looked at the page.

“From the people controlling everything.””

Olivia stood several feet away, unable to take her eyes off the notebook.

“You need to leave.””

Alexander looked at her.

“What?””

“You don’t understand what you found.””

“We found evidence.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You found a target on your back.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Five years ago, Ethan disappeared because of this.””

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why would he leave it here?””

“Because he knew someone would eventually find it.””

Alexander closed the ledger.

“And he knew I would.””

The room went quiet.

Because that was the part that frightened everyone.

Ethan had not simply hidden evidence.

He had created a path.

A trail that would eventually lead Alexander here.

But why?

Why wait five years?

Why not reveal the truth immediately?

Alexander looked at Olivia.

“You knew Ethan better than anyone after the accident.””

She looked away.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“You were communicating with him every day.””

“Because he trusted me.””

“Then tell me why he waited.””

Olivia hesitated.

Finally, she answered.

“Because he was afraid of you.””

The words surprised Alexander.

“Afraid of me?””

“Not because he thought you were dangerous.””

“Then why?””

Olivia looked at the ledger.

“Because he knew what you would do.””

Daniel understood.

“He knew Alexander would attack immediately.””

Olivia nodded.

“He knew you would try to destroy everyone responsible.””

Alexander said nothing.

Because it was true.

Five years ago, if Ethan had given him proof, Alexander would have gone to war without preparation.

He would have exposed Marcus.

He would have attacked investors.

He would have trusted the wrong people.

And maybe he would have lost everything.

Ethan knew him.

Maybe better than anyone.

A sudden sound came from the hallway.

Everyone froze.

A door closing.

Daniel immediately reached for the security alarm.

Alexander raised his hand.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever is here wants us to know.””

They waited.

A shadow appeared at the end of the hallway.

Then a person stepped into the light.

Marcus Whitmore.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What are you doing here?””

Marcus looked exhausted.

Not like the confident executive from the boardroom.

Not like the man who believed he controlled everything.

He looked like someone running out of options.

Alexander stared at him.

“You followed us.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why are you here?””

“Because I know what that book means.””

Daniel moved closer.

“You knew about it?””

Marcus looked at the ledger.

“Yes.””

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“How?””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Because Ethan showed it to me.””

The room went silent.

Alexander felt anger rise immediately.

“You worked with him.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I did.””

“And then you betrayed him.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Alexander noticed.

“Then explain.””

Marcus looked around the abandoned office.

The place where everything began.

“I betrayed you.””

The honesty was unexpected.

“But not Ethan.””

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Ethan discovered the operation first. He tried to stop it. I tried to help him.””

Alexander stepped closer.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I expect you to believe the evidence.””

He pointed toward the ledger.

“Because everything inside proves I was involved.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why help him?””

“Because I realized too late what we were dealing with.””

Alexander’s voice was cold.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at the three of them.

Then whispered:

“The Meridian Group.””

Olivia’s face changed instantly.

Alexander noticed.

“You know that name.””

Olivia said nothing.

“Olivia.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What is the Meridian Group?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Marcus finally spoke.

“The people who built the system.””

Alexander frowned.

“System?””

Marcus nodded.

“For decades, they have invested in companies before those companies became successful. They don’t just buy businesses.””

He paused.

“They create dependency.””

Daniel understood.

“They control industries.””

“Yes.””

Alexander looked at the ledger.

“And Sterling Vale?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Sterling Vale was never just a company.””

The words felt impossible.

“What was it?””

Marcus answered quietly.

“A doorway.””

Nobody spoke.

Alexander hated vague answers.

He hated mysteries.

He hated feeling like someone else understood his life better than he did.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at the ledger.

“Ethan discovered that Sterling Vale’s original technology had applications far beyond what you knew.””

Alexander frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You built the company thinking you were creating software.””

A pause.

“But Ethan discovered someone had been interested in that technology long before you founded Sterling Vale.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Someone influenced the company from the beginning?””

Marcus nodded.

Alexander stared.

His entire life suddenly felt rewritten.

The first investment.

The first partnership.

The first major breakthrough.

All the moments he believed were luck.

Maybe they were not.

“Who was the first investor?”” Marcus asked.

Alexander answered automatically.

“Ravenwood Ventures.””

Marcus looked at him.

“And who introduced them?””

Alexander stopped.

He knew.

But he had never questioned it.

“Ethan.””

The room became silent.

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.””

Alexander stepped backward.

No.

That could not be true.

Ethan had helped him.

Ethan had believed in him.

Ethan was his brother.

“You’re saying Ethan was part of this?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

His voice softened.

“He was the first person who realized something was wrong.””

He pointed toward the ledger.

“Look at the final page.””

Alexander opened the notebook.

The last page had been folded.

He carefully unfolded it.

There was only one sentence.

One sentence written years ago.

*Alexander, if you found this, it means I failed. But remember this: I never betrayed you.*

Alexander stared.

His hands tightened around the page.

Below the sentence was a name.

Not Marcus.

Not Victoria.

Not Olivia.

A name that made everyone in the room stop breathing.

A name Alexander never expected to see.

Because it belonged to the person who had been missing from Sterling Vale’s story since the beginning.

The original founder.

His father.

Richard Cross.

Daniel whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Olivia stepped back.

Marcus looked away.

Alexander stared at the name.

Because the person who created the entire mystery was not someone outside the company.

It was the man who created the family that built it.

And beneath his father’s name was one final message.

May you like

*The company was never stolen from us.*

*It was inherited from someone who wanted us to fail.*
