Chapter 7: The Child Hidden Behind Another Mother’s Grief
Emily couldn’t move.
Victoria’s words hung in the air like a threat.
The baby who disappeared twelve years ago was mine.
For a moment, Emily forgot how to breathe.
She looked at Dr. Harrison.
Then at Victoria.
Waiting for someone to laugh.
Waiting for someone to admit this was another cruel game.
But nobody did.
The silence was the answer.
“No,” Emily whispered.
Victoria watched her carefully.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know you’re trying to decide who to believe.””
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
“And you think I should believe you?””
Victoria gave a small, almost sad smile.
“No.””
The answer surprised her.
“No?””
“No.””
Victoria stepped farther into the room.
“I don’t expect you to trust me.””
“Good.””
“Because if I were you, I wouldn’t trust me either.””
For the first time, Emily saw something human in Victoria.
Not kindness.
Not innocence.
Pain.
Deep, buried pain.
But Emily refused to let that distract her.
“Where is Emma?””
Victoria looked away for a second.
“Still asking about her.””
“She’s my daughter.””
Victoria looked back.
“Yes.””
The simple agreement made Emily hesitate.
“You admit that?””
“Yes.””
“Then what is this?””
Victoria walked toward the old desk.
“This is about my daughter.””
Emily felt anger rising.
“You said she was yours.””
“She was.””
The word struck her.
Emily froze.
“Was?””
Victoria looked at the floor.
“My daughter died twelve years ago.””
The room went quiet.
Even Emily’s anger paused.
“She died?””
Victoria nodded.
“The night Emma was born.””
Emily stared.
“I don’t understand.””
“You’re not supposed to.””
Victoria’s voice became colder.
“Because nobody ever told you the truth.””
Dr. Harrison looked uncomfortable.
“Victoria.””
She ignored him.
“My daughter was born premature. She spent weeks in the hospital.””
Emily listened.
The story was moving in a direction she never expected.
“She was fragile. She needed constant care.””
Victoria looked at the old medical records.
“And then came the accident.””
Emily remembered.
The hospital.
The confusion.
The chaos.
“During the emergency transfer,” Victoria continued, “my daughter’s records were damaged.””
“Damaged?””
“Yes.””
Emily frowned.
“But the babies weren’t switched.””
“No.””
Victoria looked directly at her.
“They weren’t.””
That answer created even more confusion.
“Then what happened?””
Victoria’s face hardened.
“Someone changed the records.””
Emily felt cold.
“Who?””
Victoria looked at Daniel’s name written on one of the old files.
“Your husband.””
The room became silent.
“No.””
The word escaped before Emily could stop it.
Victoria studied her.
“You still defend him.””
“I don’t believe you.””
“You don’t have to.””
Victoria placed a document on the desk.
“You just have to read.””
Emily didn’t move.
Dr. Harrison stepped forward.
“Emily, don’t.””
She looked at him.
“Why?””
His silence bothered her.
“Why don’t you want me to see it?””
The doctor looked away.
That was enough.
Emily walked to the desk.
She picked up the document.
The first page looked like a hospital report.
The second page was different.
A handwritten note.
A signature.
Daniel Carter.
Emily’s heart dropped.
She looked closer.
“No.””
Victoria’s voice was quiet.
“He signed an agreement.””
Emily looked at Daniel’s signature again.
“What agreement?””
Victoria answered.
“To keep the truth hidden.””
Emily looked up.
“About what?””
Victoria stared at her.
“About my daughter.””
Emily’s hands shook.
“You’re saying Daniel had something to do with your baby’s death?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Emily looked confused.
“No?””
Victoria shook her head.
“My daughter died because she was sick.””
A strange relief appeared.
Then disappeared.
“Then what did Daniel do?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with anger.
“He helped erase her existence.””
Emily looked at Dr. Harrison.
“Is this true?””
The doctor didn’t answer.
“Is this true?””
Finally, he spoke.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed something inside her.
Emily stepped back.
“Why?””
Dr. Harrison sighed.
“Because Daniel thought he was protecting you.””
Emily almost laughed.
Again.
That same excuse.
Always protection.
Always love.
Always a reason.
“But why?””
The doctor explained.
“Victoria’s daughter died shortly after birth. There were legal complications because of the company investigation. Victoria believed the hospital was responsible.””
“And?””
“She threatened to expose everyone.””
Emily looked at Victoria.
“So you blackmailed them?””
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised Emily.
“I was desperate.””
“That doesn’t justify anything.””
“I know.””
The answer was immediate.
Emily studied her.
Victoria wasn’t pretending.
She wasn’t asking forgiveness.
She was admitting the worst parts.
“I wanted someone to pay.””
Victoria looked down.
“And Daniel became the person I blamed.””
Emily looked at the document.
“But what does this have to do with Emma?””
Victoria took a breath.
“Because Daniel made a choice.””
“What choice?””
“He agreed to help me disappear.””
Emily froze.
“What?””
“He helped create a new identity.””
“For your daughter?””
“No.””
Victoria looked at her.
“For me.””
The room went silent.
Emily felt lost.
“I don’t understand.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“Daniel knew I had information that could destroy his company. He knew I could expose everyone involved.””
“And?””
“He made a deal.””
Emily looked at Dr. Harrison.
“What deal?””
The doctor answered.
“He helped Victoria leave the country.””
Emily stared.
“But she’s here.””
“Yes.””
“She came back.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victoria smiled without humor.
“Because I came back for the only thing I had left.””
Emily’s expression hardened.
“My daughter?””
Victoria looked at her.
“No.””
A pause.
“The truth.””
Emily felt something shift.
For the first time, Victoria wasn’t speaking like someone seeking revenge.
She was speaking like someone who had lost everything.
“But you threatened my daughter.””
Victoria’s face changed.
“I never touched Emma.””
“Then where is she?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
Emily stepped closer.
“Where is my daughter?””
Victoria looked toward the hallway.
“She’s with someone who knows the truth.””
“Who?””
A voice came from behind Emily.
“Me.””
Emily turned.
Her entire body froze.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Young.
Maybe in her early twenties.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were familiar.
Too familiar.
Emily looked at Victoria.
Then at the young woman.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked nervous.
“My name is Anna.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Anna…”
Emily felt her heart pounding.
The young woman stepped forward.
“I’m sorry.””
“Sorry for what?””
Anna looked at her.
“For making you believe you knew everything.””
Emily couldn’t understand.
“What does that mean?””
Anna looked at the old photograph on the wall.
“The night Emma was born…”
She swallowed.
“My mother lost me.””
Victoria looked down.
“And someone else found me.””
Emily stared.
“Found you?””
Anna nodded.
“For twelve years, I was raised under another name.””
The room became completely silent.
Emily’s mind struggled to understand.
Then she whispered:
“Who raised you?””
Anna looked directly at her.
“Your husband.””
Emily felt the blood leave her face.
“No.””
Anna’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The words broke through every wall Emily had left.
Daniel.
Her husband.
The man who hid financial crimes.
The man who hid hospital records.
The man who said he was protecting her.
He had been protecting another secret.
Another child.
Emily stepped back.
“Daniel raised you?””
Anna nodded.
“Not as his daughter.””
A pause.
“But as someone he promised to protect.””
Emily looked at Victoria.
Then Dr. Harrison.
Then Anna.
Everything was changing again.
The story she thought she understood was becoming something much darker.
“Where is Emma?”” Emily asked.
Anna’s face changed.
And this time, fear appeared.
“She’s with Daniel.””
Emily froze.
“What?””
Anna looked at her.
“He took her because he finally realized the truth was coming out.””
Emily’s phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked.
The screen showed one name.
Daniel.
She answered immediately.
“Where is my daughter?””
There was silence.
Then Daniel’s voice.
Broken.
Terrified.
“Emily…”
“Where is Emma?””
“I can explain.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You have explained enough.””
A pause.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Emma is safe.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Where are you?””
Another silence.
Then he said:
“I’m at the place where all of this started.””
Emily’s heart sank.
“What place?””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“The hospital.””
The call ended.
Emily looked at the others.
And she finally understood.
The truth wasn’t hidden in the past.
May you like
It was waiting for her.
Where her daughter was born.
