Chapter 5: The Name Written Before She Was Born
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The silence inside Emma’s bedroom felt heavier than any argument Emily and Daniel had ever had.
The phone call was over.
Victoria was gone.
But her final words remained.
Ask your mother why she changed Emma’s name on the original birth record.
Emily stood in the center of the room, holding the hospital document in one hand and staring at Linda.
Her mother.
The woman who raised her.
The woman who held her when she cried.
The woman who had always been the one person Emily believed would never hide anything from her.
And now she was standing in front of her with a secret that had lasted twelve years.
“Mom.””
Linda looked up.
Emily’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Tell me what she meant.””
Linda looked toward Daniel.
That tiny movement was enough.
Emily noticed.
“You’re still looking at him.””
Her mother’s eyes returned to her.
“Because he knows.””
Emily’s expression changed.
Daniel looked away.
The betrayal became deeper.
Not just one person.
Everyone.
Everyone had known something except her.
“What did you change?”” Emily asked.
Linda slowly sat down on Emma’s bed.
The same bed where Emily had read bedtime stories, helped with homework, and watched her daughter grow.
Now even this room felt different.
“I didn’t change who Emma was.””
Emily swallowed.
“That wasn’t my question.””
Linda nodded.
“You deserve the truth.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Finally.””
The word hurt everyone.
Linda looked down at her hands.
“When Emma was born, the hospital was overwhelmed.””
Emily listened.
Her mind returned to that night.
The pain.
The fear.
The excitement.
The moment she first heard her baby cry.
“I remember everything,” Emily whispered.
Linda looked at her.
“No.””
Emily frowned.
“What?””
“You remember what we allowed you to remember.””
The sentence felt like a physical blow.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Linda.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t get to stop this anymore.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
Emily looked between them.
“Stop what?””
Linda took a breath.
“The truth.””
She held up the document.
“When Emma was born, there was confusion because of the accident. The hospital records were mixed up temporarily.””
Emily nodded slowly.
“Daniel already told me that.””
Linda looked at her.
“He told you part of it.””
Emily closed her eyes.
Of course.
Another half-truth.
Another carefully controlled version.
“What happened next?””
Linda continued.
“After the accident, Daniel was injured. Not badly, but enough that doctors kept him under observation. You were recovering from delivery complications.””
Emily remembered that.
She had been exhausted.
She remembered waking up alone at times.
She remembered nurses coming in and out.
She remembered Daniel disappearing for short periods.
She had assumed it was because he was worried.
Because he was scared.
Not because he was hiding something.
“During that time,” Linda said, “the hospital made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Linda hesitated.
“The original records listed another baby under Emma’s temporary identification number.””
Emily felt cold.
“But Emma was mine.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
“Because another newborn was also moved through emergency care that night.””
Emily stared.
“Another baby?””
Linda nodded.
“A baby connected to someone else.””
The room went silent.
Emily’s heartbeat grew louder.
“Who?””
Linda looked at Daniel.
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
Emily turned.
“You know.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Who was the other baby?””
Before Daniel could speak, Linda said:
“Victoria Hale’s daughter.””
The room went completely still.
Emily felt like she couldn’t breathe.
“Victoria had a baby that night?””
Linda nodded.
“Yes.””
“But why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Because Victoria made sure nobody could.””
Emily looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Shortly after Emma was born.””
Emily laughed once.
A painful, empty sound.
“So let me understand this.””
She looked at everyone.
“My husband knew.””
“Yes.””
“My mother knew.””
“Yes.””
“And somehow I was the only person who didn’t?””
Nobody answered.
Because there was no defense.
Emily walked toward the window.
Outside, the neighborhood was quiet.
Normal.
People were probably sitting at dinner tables.
Watching television.
Talking about ordinary things.
Meanwhile, her family was falling apart around her.
“What does Victoria want?””
Daniel answered.
“I don’t know.””
Emily turned.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I swear.””
“You know her.””
“I knew of her.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
Daniel looked frustrated.
“She manipulated everyone.””
Emily shook her head.
“Maybe.””
The word surprised him.
“But you still chose to hide things.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
At least this time, he admitted it.
Emily looked at her mother.
“And Emma?””
Linda’s face softened.
“She is your daughter.””
“Biologically?””
“Yes.””
“Are you sure?””
Linda nodded.
“Absolutely.””
Emily closed her eyes.
A small piece of relief appeared.
Then disappeared.
Because another question remained.
“Then why did Victoria say someone knows the truth about her birth?””
Nobody answered.
A sound came from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Daniel immediately moved toward the hallway.
“Stay here.””
Emily followed.
“No.””
“Emily.””
“No more secrets.””
They walked downstairs together.
The front door was still locked.
The house was quiet.
Then Emily saw something on the kitchen counter.
A small envelope.
Her name written on it.
She stared.
“When did that get there?””
Daniel walked closer.
Nobody touched it.
Not at first.
Because everyone understood.
Someone had entered the house.
Someone had left it.
Someone wanted them to find it.
Daniel carefully picked it up.
“It’s addressed to you.””
Emily looked at the handwriting.
She didn’t recognize it.
“Open it.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You sure?””
“No.””
She swallowed.
“But I need to know.””
Inside was a photograph.
A hospital photograph.
Emily’s hands began shaking.
It showed two newborn babies.
Wrapped in blankets.
Two small hospital tags.
Two names.
She looked closer.
One tag read:
*Baby Carter*
The other:
*Baby Hale*
Behind the photo was a handwritten note.
Emily read it silently.
Then her face changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What does it say?””
She handed it to him.
His eyes moved across the page.
The note contained only one sentence.
*You were right to ask who Emma is. You should also ask who I am.*
Daniel went pale.
Emily looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, Linda spoke.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Because Victoria wasn’t the only one who knew about the mistake.””
Emily turned.
“What are you saying?””
Linda looked terrified.
“There was another person involved.””
“Who?””
Linda hesitated.
Then said:
“The doctor who delivered Emma.””
Emily frowned.
“Dr. Harrison?””
Linda nodded.
“Yes.””
“What about him?””
“He was the one who discovered the records were wrong.””
Emily stared.
“And?””
Linda’s eyes filled with fear.
“He disappeared the next morning.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
A terrible realization crossed his face.
“Victoria didn’t send this because she wanted revenge.””
Emily looked at him.
“Then why?””
Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.
“She sent it because she wants us to find something.””
“What?””
He looked toward the upstairs hallway.
Toward Emma’s empty room.
“The person who knows what really happened that night.””
Emily felt a chill.
“Who?””
Daniel’s answer was almost a whisper.
“I think Victoria knows.””
A moment later, Emily’s phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
This time, no photograph.
Only an address.
And three words.
*Come alone, Emily.*
She stared at the screen.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Emily looked at him.
“She has Emma.””
“We don’t know that.””
“We do.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You’re not going.””
Emily looked at the man she had loved for twelve years.
The man who had lied.
The man who had protected her.
The man who had broken her trust.
“I spent twelve years believing you would protect our family.””
Her voice was quiet.
“Now I have to be the one who does.””
Daniel’s face fell.
“Emily.””
She grabbed her coat.
“I’m going.””
Linda stood.
“Where?””
Emily looked at the address.
Then back at them.
“To meet the person who knows the truth about my daughter.””
And for the first time that night, Daniel realized something terrifying.
May you like
Emily was no longer the woman waiting for answers.
She was the woman going to find them.
