Chapter 6: The Stranger Who Knew Her Daughter’s First Breath
The address led Emily to the oldest part of the city.
Away from the luxury neighborhoods.
Away from the glass buildings where Daniel spent most of his days.
Away from the world where the Carter family looked untouchable.
The streets became narrower.
The buildings became older.
The perfect image of her life felt farther away with every turn.
Emily drove alone.
Daniel had tried to stop her.
Of course he had.
He stood in the driveway, blocking her path, telling her they needed a plan.
Telling her it was dangerous.
Telling her he would go with her.
But Emily had heard those words before.
I’m protecting you.
I know what’s best.
Trust me.
Not anymore.
She needed the truth.
Not a version carefully edited by someone else.
Not a truth delivered when it was convenient.
The truth.
Her phone sat on the passenger seat.
The message remained open.
The address.
The three words.
*Come alone, Emily.*
She hated that she listened.
She hated that she had no choice.
Because whoever sent it knew something about Emma.
And a mother could ignore many things.
But not a threat against her child.
The building at the address looked abandoned.
A small medical office that had been closed for years.
The faded sign above the entrance barely showed the name.
*Harrison Family Clinic.*
Emily stopped walking.
Dr. Harrison.
The doctor who delivered Emma.
The doctor who disappeared.
Her heart began beating faster.
She checked the message again.
This was the place.
She pushed open the door.
The inside smelled like dust and old paper.
The lights flickered.
The waiting room looked frozen in time.
Old magazines.
Empty chairs.
A reception desk covered with files.
“Hello?””
Her voice echoed.
No answer.
Emily stepped forward.
Every instinct told her to leave.
But then she saw something.
A photograph on the wall.
A group of doctors standing outside the hospital.
She recognized one face immediately.
Dr. Thomas Harrison.
Older.
Smiling.
Standing beside him was a woman holding a baby.
Emily moved closer.
The woman was not familiar.
But the baby’s blanket was.
A small white blanket with a blue stitched pattern.
Emily had one exactly like it.
She touched the frame.
Then heard a voice behind her.
“You shouldn’t have come here.””
Emily turned quickly.
A man stood near the hallway entrance.
Older.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
But alive.
Her breath caught.
“Dr. Harrison?””
The man looked at her.
For a moment, he seemed surprised.
Then sad.
“Yes.””
Emily stared.
“You’re alive.””
The doctor gave a weak smile.
“Apparently that disappoints many people.””
Emily ignored the comment.
“Where is my daughter?””
His expression changed.
“I don’t know.””
The answer made her angry.
“You contacted me.””
“No.””
“You sent the message.””
“No.””
Emily froze.
“What?””
Dr. Harrison looked toward the dark hallway.
“I was hoping you would come before she found out.””
“Before who found out?””
He didn’t answer.
Emily stepped closer.
“Tell me where Emma is.””
“I can’t.””
“Can’t or won’t?””
The doctor looked at her.
“Because I don’t know where she is.””
Emily studied him.
She wanted to believe him.
But believing people was what had gotten her here.
“What do you know?””
Dr. Harrison sighed.
“I know that twelve years ago, a mistake happened.””
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
“A mistake that everyone kept secret?””
His face showed regret.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The doctor walked slowly toward a desk.
“Because the truth threatened powerful people.””
Emily followed.
“Victoria?””
He nodded.
“She wasn’t always who she is now.””
Emily frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Dr. Harrison opened a drawer.
Inside were old medical records.
“I met Victoria before the business.””
Emily watched him.
“She was young. Scared. Alone.””
“What happened?””
“She gave birth to a daughter.””
Emily looked at him.
“And?””
“And that child became the center of everything.””
The doctor pulled out a folder.
Emily recognized the hospital logo.
“What is that?””
“Records.””
“About Emma?””
“About both children.””
Emily’s stomach tightened.
“Why do you have them?””
Dr. Harrison looked away.
“Because I was the only one who knew the full truth.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were two birth records.
Two names.
Two dates.
Two mothers.
Emily saw her own name.
Then Victoria’s.
The details were clear.
There had been confusion.
But not the kind everyone thought.
“What happened?”” Emily asked.
The doctor hesitated.
“The babies were never switched.””
Emily looked up.
“What?””
“The hospital made an administrative error. The records were wrong temporarily. But the babies stayed with their correct mothers.””
Emily felt a strange mixture of relief and confusion.
“Then why did everyone act like there was a possibility?””
The doctor looked at her.
“Because someone wanted there to be a possibility.””
The room became quiet.
“Who?””
Dr. Harrison’s expression hardened.
“Daniel.””
Emily stopped.
“No.””
The doctor looked at her carefully.
“You still love him.””
The statement wasn’t a question.
Emily didn’t answer.
Because she hated that it was true.
“Daniel didn’t create the problem,” Dr. Harrison continued.
“Then what did he do?””
“He allowed it to continue.””
Emily felt her chest tighten.
“Explain.””
The doctor sat down.
“Twelve years ago, after the accident, Daniel discovered Victoria was involved in illegal business dealings. He wanted to expose her.””
Emily listened.
“But Victoria threatened him.””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
The doctor looked at the file.
“With the truth about the records.””
Emily frowned.
“But the records were wrong.””
“Exactly.””
She stared.
“Why would that matter?””
“Because Victoria knew Daniel was afraid of losing his family.””
Emily’s face changed.
“She used Emma.””
“Yes.””
The doctor closed the folder.
“She convinced him that if he exposed her, she would destroy his life.””
Emily shook her head.
“So he stayed silent.””
“Yes.””
“Because of fear.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
The painful part was that she understood.
Not forgiveness.
Not acceptance.
Understanding.
Fear could make good people make terrible choices.
But it didn’t erase the damage.
“What does Victoria want now?””
Dr. Harrison looked toward the window.
“She wants control.””
“Of what?””
“Everything.””
Emily crossed her arms.
“That’s not an answer.””
The doctor looked at her.
“Victoria believes Daniel ruined her life.””
“How?””
“Because she believes he took something from her.””
Emily felt a chill.
“Emma?””
The doctor didn’t respond.
That was answer enough.
“No.””
The word came out immediately.
“Emma is my daughter.””
“Yes.””
“She is.””
“Yes.””
The doctor leaned forward.
“But Victoria doesn’t care about biology.””
Emily stared.
“Then what does she care about?””
“Power.””
A noise came from outside.
A car door closing.
Both turned.
Dr. Harrison’s face changed.
“You need to leave.””
Emily looked at him.
“Who is it?””
“Now.””
The urgency in his voice made her move.
But before she reached the door, she heard footsteps.
Someone entered the building.
Slow.
Confident.
Not hiding.
A familiar voice filled the hallway.
“Thomas.””
Emily froze.
Victoria.
Dr. Harrison closed his eyes.
“She found us.””
Emily looked at him.
“You knew she would come?””
“Yes.””
“Then why bring me here?””
The doctor looked at her with regret.
“Because there was one thing I needed you to know before she told you her version.””
Victoria stepped closer.
Her heels echoed across the floor.
Then she appeared in the doorway.
She looked exactly like the woman from the photograph.
Calm.
Elegant.
Unbothered.
But Emily noticed something different.
Victoria wasn’t looking at Daniel.
She wasn’t looking at Dr. Harrison.
She was looking at her.
“You finally came,” Victoria said.
Emily stood tall.
“Where is my daughter?””
Victoria smiled faintly.
“That’s the first thing you ask?””
“Yes.””
“Not why I brought you here?””
“No.””
Emily’s voice hardened.
“Not why you ruined my family?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“Where is Emma?””
For the first time, Victoria’s expression changed.
A small crack in her confidence.
“She’s safe.””
Emily’s hands tightened.
“I want to see her.””
Victoria looked at Dr. Harrison.
Then back at Emily.
“You will.””
“When?””
“When you’re ready to hear the truth.””
Emily laughed bitterly.
“I’ve heard enough secrets for one night.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“You’ve heard their secrets.””
A pause.
“Now you need to hear mine.””
Emily stared at her.
“What secret?””
Victoria’s eyes became colder.
“The reason Emma’s birth was hidden.””
The room fell silent.
Then Victoria whispered:
“Because your daughter was never the only child involved that night.””
Emily felt the ground disappear beneath her.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria looked toward the door.
A shadow moved outside.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Because the baby who disappeared twelve years ago…”
May you like
She looked back at Emily.
“Was mine.””
