Chapter 3: The Night Everyone Promised to Forget
Emily stared at the message on her phone until the words blurred.
You should ask your husband why he never told you about the night your daughter was born.
The parking garage suddenly felt colder.
Not because of the concrete walls.
Not because of the wind moving through the open levels.
Because of the realization that someone out there knew something about the most important night of her life.
The night she became a mother.
The night she thought she and Daniel became a family.
“Who sent that?”” Daniel asked again.
Emily didn’t answer.
She watched his face carefully.
For years, she had learned the smallest details about him.
The way his eyebrow moved when he was confused.
The way he tapped his fingers when he was nervous.
The way he avoided eye contact when he wasn’t telling the truth.
And right now…
He wasn’t confused.
He wasn’t surprised.
He was terrified.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
His eyes met hers.
“What happened that night?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was enough.
Emily felt her heart sink.
Rachel noticed the silence too.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
Rachel’s expression was no longer professional.
It was disappointed.
“You told me you were going to explain everything.””
“I was.””
“When?””
Daniel looked away.
“Soon.””
Rachel shook her head.
“Soon is the reason we’re standing here.””
Emily looked between them.
“You both know something.””
Neither answered.
The anger building inside her was stronger than fear now.
“I am done standing here while everyone talks around me like I’m a child.””
Her voice echoed through the empty garage.
“I am her mother.””
She pointed at her phone.
“I carried my daughter for nine months. I was there when she took her first breath. I was there for every fever, every nightmare, every birthday.””
Her eyes locked onto Daniel.
“And somehow there is a part of her story that I don’t know?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“Emily…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Tell me.””
A long silence followed.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“The night Emma was born…”
He stopped.
Emily waited.
Their daughter’s name alone brought back memories.
Emma.
Their little girl.
The child who had changed everything.
Emily remembered the hospital room.
The bright lights.
The smell of clean sheets.
Daniel holding her hand.
His tears when the doctor placed their baby in his arms.
At least…
That was what she remembered.
“Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“There was an accident.””
Emily frowned.
“What accident?””
“Before we got to the hospital.””
Her expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel looked down.
“On the way there, someone hit our car.””
For a moment, Emily didn’t understand.
Then she laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because her mind refused to accept what she was hearing.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You told me we had a normal drive to the hospital.””
“I know.””
“You told me you almost missed the delivery because traffic was bad.””
“I know.””
“You looked me in the eyes and told me that.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I lied.””
The word felt heavier than anything else.
Emily stared at him.
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He looked at her.
“Losing you.””
Emily shook her head.
“You’re going to have to explain a lot better than that.””
Daniel took a breath.
“That night, before the accident, I got a phone call.””
“From who?””
He hesitated.
Emily already knew.
“Victoria?””
Daniel nodded.
Emily felt sick.
“What did she want?””
“She wanted me to meet her.””
“Why?””
“She said she had information about the company.””
Rachel interrupted quietly.
“She was already manipulating him.””
Emily looked at Rachel.
“But he went?””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought it would be quick.””
Emily stared at him.
“You left me while I was in labor?””
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
“I didn’t leave you.””
“Then what did you do?””
“I went outside the hospital.””
The anger returned.
“You left the room.””
“Yes.””
“While I was in pain?””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“Why?””
Daniel looked broken.
“Because Victoria threatened me.””
Emily froze.
“With what?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Rachel did.
“With Emma.””
The world stopped.
Emily looked at Rachel.
“What?””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“Victoria knew about the accident. She knew Daniel had been involved in the business. She knew he was trying to separate himself from the company.””
Emily looked at Daniel.
“What does Emma have to do with that?””
Daniel’s face changed.
A father’s fear appeared.
“She threatened to take everything.””
“That doesn’t explain our daughter.””
Daniel looked down.
“Victoria knew the hospital had accidentally mixed up some information after the accident.””
Emily’s breathing became uneven.
“What information?””
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel.””
His voice was barely audible.
“There was confusion about the emergency records.””
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
“What confusion?””
Rachel stepped forward.
“The accident happened close to the hospital. There were multiple emergency cases arriving at the same time.””
Emily looked at her.
“Stop.””
She raised her hand.
“I don’t understand.””
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel looked like he wanted to disappear.
“Emily…”
“Tell me.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“For a short time…”
He stopped.
Then forced himself to continue.
“We didn’t know if Emma was our biological daughter.””
The words hit harder than anything Emily had heard that night.
She felt numb.
Not angry.
Not hurt.
Just empty.
“What?””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“But listen to me.””
She moved back.
“No.””
“Emily.””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You’re telling me that for twelve years…”
“I found out later.””
“Later?””
“I found out after the tests.””
“What tests?””
Daniel looked away.
Emily’s eyes widened.
“You tested our daughter?””
“I needed to know.””
A painful silence followed.
“You tested our daughter without telling me?””
“I was scared.””
“You were scared?””
Tears finally fell down her face.
“You were scared?””
She pointed toward the entrance of the garage.
“I was the person who stood beside you every single day. I was the person who trusted you more than anyone in this world.””
Her voice broke.
“And you secretly questioned whether our daughter was mine?””
Daniel looked destroyed.
“I never questioned whether she was yours.””
Emily stopped.
The words confused her.
“What?””
“I knew she was yours.””
“Then what were you questioning?””
Daniel looked at her.
“The other half.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Emily covered her mouth.
“No.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“The test confirmed I was her father.””
Relief should have come.
But it didn’t.
Because the damage was already done.
“You knew.””
Daniel looked down.
“You knew for twelve years.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I wanted to protect you.””
Emily wiped her tears.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked at Rachel.
“You said he was protecting me.””
Then back to Daniel.
“You say you were protecting me.””
Her voice became colder.
“But all you did was make decisions about my life without me.””
Daniel had no answer.
Because there was no answer.
Emily looked at the photograph in the folder again.
Victoria.
The company.
The secrets.
The lies.
Everything was connected.
“Where is Victoria now?”” Emily asked.
Rachel’s face changed.
“She disappeared.””
“When?””
“Two days ago.””
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Does she know I found out?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
His silence was enough.
A new fear entered the room.
Someone had sent that message.
Someone knew Emily was there.
Someone knew Daniel’s secrets were finally coming out.
Then another notification appeared on Emily’s phone.
Another message.
This time with a picture.
Her fingers trembled as she opened it.
The image showed Emma.
Their daughter.
Standing outside her school.
Taken that morning.
Emily’s heart stopped.
The message underneath was short.
*The truth was never meant to hurt you, Emily. It was meant to save you.*
She looked at Daniel.
“Someone is watching our daughter.””
Daniel’s face turned pale.
For the first time that night, husband and wife were afraid of the same thing.
Not losing their marriage.
Not losing money.
Not losing their reputation.
Losing their child.
Daniel immediately grabbed his phone.
“We’re leaving.””
Emily didn’t move.
“Where?””
“To get Emma.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“You need to understand something.””
They both looked at her.
“Victoria doesn’t disappear because she’s afraid.””
Rachel’s voice lowered.
“She disappears because she’s preparing her next move.””
May you like
The lights above them flickered.
And somewhere beyond the walls of the parking garage, someone was already watching the Carter family fall apart.
