Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Everything

For a few seconds, I thought I had heard him wrong.

Susan.

Emily's mother.

The woman who had stood beside the hospital window earlier.

The woman who looked uncomfortable when I questioned the baby's name.

The woman who had whispered, *Don't sign anything tonight.*

The woman who had seemed afraid.

I stared at Adrian.

“What did you say?””

His face was pale.

“Susan gave Daniel your number.””

“No.””

The answer came before I even thought about it.

“No, she wouldn't.””

Adrian didn't look away.

“I saw the message.””

I shook my head.

“You're wrong.””

“I wish I was.””

“You don't know her.””

His expression tightened.

“Neither did you.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

I thought I knew Susan.

I thought I knew Emily.

I thought I knew my own life.

But every person I trusted seemed to have a locked room inside them.

A room where I wasn't allowed to enter.

I turned toward Emily.

She was staring at Adrian.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just devastated.

That was the moment I knew.

She believed him.

“Emily.””

She looked at me.

Her lips trembled.

“I didn't know.””

I felt something inside me drop.

“You didn't know?””

“No.””

“Your mother?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why does he think she did?””

“I don't know.””

I laughed quietly.

There it was again.

The same answer.

The answer that had followed me all day.

I don't know.

But this time, I couldn't accept it.

I walked toward the door.

“We're leaving.””

Emily looked shocked.

“James.””

“We're leaving this hospital.””

“You can't.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because the baby just came out of surgery recovery.””

“What?””

She froze.

I immediately looked at the baby.

“What do you mean?””

Her expression changed.

“I meant…”

She stopped.

I stared.

“Emily.””

She looked away.

Another secret.

Another unfinished sentence.

“What surgery?””

She closed her eyes.

“It wasn't surgery.””

“Then what?””

“I don't know how to explain.””

My patience disappeared.

“Try.””

She swallowed.

“When he was born, the doctors noticed something.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

“He had trouble breathing.””

I looked at the baby.

My son.

“He's okay now.””

“But?””

“No but.””

“Emily.””

She looked at me.

“He needs to stay under observation.””

I looked at the tiny machine beside him.

The wires.

The monitors.

The things I had ignored because I was too focused on the disaster happening around us.

Suddenly, I felt ashamed.

Because while I was drowning in betrayal and secrets…

My son was fighting his own battle.

I stepped closer to him.

His little chest moved gently.

Up.

Down.

Up.

Down.

Alive.

Safe.

For the first time in hours, the anger disappeared.

Not completely.

But enough.

I touched his tiny hand.

“I'm sorry.””

I whispered the words before I realized I was saying them.

I wasn't sure who I was apologizing to.

My son.

Myself.

Maybe both.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

A message.

I opened it.

*You always were a good man, James.*

My blood ran cold.

A second message appeared.

*That is why Emily chose you.*

I looked at Emily.

She looked terrified.

Another message.

*But good men make predictable choices.*

Adrian stepped closer.

“Don't reply.””

I didn't.

Another message came.

*Susan is coming to you now.*

Then:

*Ask her why she lied.*

I looked toward the door.

As if expecting Susan to appear.

And almost immediately...

A knock.

Everyone froze.

The door opened.

Susan stood there.

Her face was full of fear.

She looked at Emily.

Then me.

Then the baby.

She knew.

She knew we knew.

“James…”

I stared at her.

“How long?””

Her face changed.

“Please.””

“How long have you known?””

She looked at Emily.

Emily whispered:

“Mom?””

Susan's eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted this.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“That doesn't answer my question.””

She stepped inside.

Slowly.

Like approaching a wounded animal.

“I knew Daniel was alive.””

The room went silent.

Emily covered her mouth.

“You knew?””

Susan looked at her daughter.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Susan looked down.

“He contacted me.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

Emily looked broken.

“Years?””

Susan nodded.

“He found me after you left.””

I stared.

“After Emily ran?””

“Yes.””

“What did he want?””

Susan's face twisted.

“Information.””

“About Emily?””

“Yes.””

“About me?””

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

My hands curled into fists.

“You gave him information about us.””

Susan started crying.

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone was scared.

Everyone had an excuse.

Everyone had a reason.

And somehow I was always the last person to know.

“You gave him my number.””

Susan looked at Adrian.

Then away.

“Yes.””

Emily's voice broke.

“Mom…”

Susan turned toward her.

“I thought I could control it.””

Emily stared.

“You thought you could control Daniel?””

Susan cried harder.

“I thought if I kept him calm, he would leave you alone.””

“And did he?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Honest.

Finally.

“No.””

Emily stepped back.

“You knew what he was.””

“Yes.””

“And you still talked to him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Susan looked at her daughter.

“Because he threatened your sister.””

Emily froze.

“What?””

Susan wiped her face.

“He said if I didn't cooperate, he would hurt her.””

The room became silent.

The same pattern.

The same nightmare.

Daniel controlled everyone through fear.

Everyone except me.

At least…

Not yet.

I looked at Susan.

“What information did you give him?””

She looked at me.

“I told him you were here.””

“Why?””

“Because he asked.””

“That isn't an answer.””

Susan shook her head.

“I thought he wanted to see Emily.””

“And the phone number?””

Her silence answered.

I looked away.

I couldn't even feel anger anymore.

Just exhaustion.

A deep exhaustion that reached my bones.

Emily sat down slowly.

“My whole life…”

Her voice cracked.

“My whole life everyone decided what was best for me.””

Susan started crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“You were afraid.””

Susan went silent.

Because she knew.

Emily looked at me.

“I did the same thing.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“I told myself I was protecting you.””

Her eyes filled.

“But I was afraid.””

That was the first time all day she had said something that felt completely honest.

Not an explanation.

Not a defense.

Just the truth.

Fear.

I sat beside the bed.

I looked at my son.

Then at Emily.

Then at Susan.

Three generations of people connected by one man's control.

And suddenly I understood something.

Daniel didn't just hurt people.

He taught people to hide.

He taught them to lie.

He taught them that survival meant silence.

And Emily had spent years believing that was normal.

But I couldn't let that become my son's life.

No matter what happened next.

“We need to call the police.””

Everyone looked at me.

Susan immediately shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel will disappear.””

“He already disappeared.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

Susan looked terrified.

“He has people.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it's true.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“People inside the system.””

I stared.

“What system?””

She didn't answer.

I stood.

“What system?””

Susan looked at Emily.

“I didn't want you to know.””

Emily's face hardened.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Not another secret.””

Susan closed her eyes.

“Your father had friends.””

“What kind of friends?””

“Powerful ones.””

I looked at Adrian.

He nodded slowly.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

“I never had proof.””

I looked at Susan.

“And you do?””

Susan nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then reached into her purse.

She pulled out an envelope.

A thick one.

She handed it to me.

“What is this?””

“Everything.””

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Names.

Dates.

Records.

I looked at the first page.

And immediately recognized one name.

A name that made my blood freeze.

My company's name.

I looked up.

“What does my work have to do with this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Emily.

She looked shocked.

“I don't know.””

I looked at Adrian.

His expression had changed.

“What?””

He stared at the document.

“James…”

“What?””

He pointed.

“Your company isn't connected to Daniel.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

Adrian looked at the page again.

“Daniel is connected to your company.””

The room went silent.

I felt dizzy.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Your father-in-law wasn't just watching Emily.””

He swallowed.

“He was watching you.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Susan whispered:

“Because Daniel didn't find you by accident.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at Emily.

Then at me.

“He chose you.””

The words felt impossible.

“What do you mean?””

Susan's eyes filled with tears.

“James…”

She took a breath.

“Your marriage to Emily was never random.””

I felt the room disappear around me.

“No.””

Susan looked at me.

“Yes.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“No, that can't be true.””

Emily stood.

“Mom, what are you saying?””

Susan looked at her daughter.

Then at me.

“The first time Daniel saw James…”

She paused.

“He already knew who he was.””

I stared.

The baby monitor beeped softly.

A normal sound.

In a completely abnormal world.

Susan whispered:

“James…”

“He didn't just want Emily back.””

Her voice broke.

“He wanted access to you.””

And in that moment, I realized something terrifying.

May you like

I hadn't walked into Daniel's story six years ago.

I had been part of it from the beginning.
