Chapter 2: The Man Who Came Back
I didn't move.
For a few seconds, I wasn't even sure I was breathing.
The nurse stood in the doorway, waiting for my response, but all I could hear was the sound of my own heartbeat.
Adrian Cole.
The name felt like a ghost walking into a room full of people who had spent years pretending he was dead.
Emily's face had lost all color.
That was the part I couldn't ignore.
If Adrian being here meant nothing, she would have looked confused.
Annoyed.
Maybe even angry.
But she looked afraid.
And fear always tells the truth before people do.
“James,” she whispered.
I turned slowly toward her.
“What?””
Her lips parted, but no words came out.
The nurse looked between us.
“Should I tell him to wait?””
I stared at the hallway.
Somewhere downstairs was the man whose name was now attached to the biggest question of my life.
The man my wife promised was gone.
The man she claimed she hadn't spoken to.
The man whose name she had chosen for our child.
“No,” I said.
Emily's eyes widened.
“James.””
I ignored her.
“Tell him I'll be there.””
The nurse nodded and walked away.
The second the door closed, Emily grabbed the edge of the bed.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“No?””
“James, don't.””
“Don't what?””
“Don't go down there angry.””
I almost laughed.
“Angry?””
My voice was low.
“You think anger is the problem?””
“Please.””
“No, Emily. I need you to understand something.””
I stepped closer.
“The problem isn't that your ex-boyfriend is downstairs.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The problem is that he came here today. The day our son was born. And somehow he knew.””
She looked away.
I noticed.
A tiny movement.
A tiny crack.
But I saw it.
“How did he know?””
Silence.
I waited.
Nothing.
“How did Adrian know we were here?””
Emily swallowed.
“I don't know.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I'm not.””
“You are.””
She shook her head.
“I swear.””
“Emily, hospitals don't announce births to random people.””
“I know.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked down at the baby.
That baby.
Our son.
The person who should have been the happiest moment of my life.
Instead, I was standing in a hospital room wondering if my entire marriage had been built on another lie.
“I need to talk to him,” I said.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
I stared at her.
“You don't get to tell me no.””
“He will make everything worse.””
I froze.
“He?””
She realized what she had said.
Her expression changed.
I stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
“He's complicated.””
“Complicated?””
I repeated the word.
“That's what we're calling him now?””
Emily wiped her tears.
“James, please. Not here.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because you don't understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
But I had seen broken before.
Six years ago.
When she confessed.
I had forgiven her because I loved her.
I had convinced myself that people made terrible mistakes and still deserved a chance.
I had rebuilt our marriage piece by piece.
And now I wondered if I had been rebuilding something that was already rotten.
“I can't explain everything right now.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because Adrian is here.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
“Then explain.””
She looked toward the door.
“He knows things.””
A cold feeling settled in my chest.
“What things?””
She didn't answer.
“What things, Emily?””
Her voice dropped.
“Things about before.””
“Before what?””
She looked at me.
“Before you.””
That hurt more than I expected.
Because for a moment, I wasn't thinking about Adrian.
I was thinking about the possibility that there was an entire version of my wife that existed before me.
A version she had kept hidden.
A version where someone else knew her better than I did.
I walked toward the door.
“James.””
I stopped.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“If you talk to him…”
She paused.
“What?””
“Promise me you'll hear him out.””
I stared at her.
“You're asking me to be reasonable?””
“Yes.””
“After he walked into the hospital where my son was born?””
“Yes.””
“After you named my son after him?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“I don't know who you are right now.””
Her face broke.
That should have hurt me.
It did.
But not enough.
Not anymore.
I walked out.
The hallway felt colder than before.
Every person walking past me was living a normal day.
A father pushing a wheelchair.
A woman carrying flowers.
A nurse checking charts.
Nobody knew that my entire world had changed in one sentence.
Nobody knew that the happiest day of my life had become the day I started questioning everything.
I followed the signs toward the lobby.
My hands were shaking.
I hated that.
I hated that Adrian still had that kind of power over me.
I had never met the man after discovering the affair.
Not face to face.
I had wanted to.
God, I had wanted to.
I had imagined what I would say.
How I would make him feel small.
How I would prove that Emily had chosen me.
But life doesn't always give you the confrontation you imagine.
Sometimes it gives you something worse.
It gives you questions.
And questions are harder to fight.
Because anger needs an enemy.
Doubt needs answers.
When I reached the lobby, I saw him immediately.
Adrian Cole was sitting near the front windows.
Older than the pictures I remembered.
Different.
His hair was shorter.
His face sharper.
There were lines around his eyes.
But I recognized him.
Some people leave a mark on your memory that time can't erase.
He looked up.
Our eyes met.
And for one strange moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he stood.
“James.””
Hearing my name from his mouth made my stomach twist.
“You know who I am.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
He looked away briefly.
“I knew you'd ask that.””
“Answer me.””
He took a breath.
“I've known about you for years.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
“Excuse me?””
“I know who you are.””
“How?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Because Emily talked about you.””
My jaw tightened.
“When?””
“Before.””
“Before what?””
“Before everything happened.””
I stepped closer.
“You mean before she cheated?””
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Not shame.
Something else.
Regret.
“I know what happened.””
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“And you still showed up?””
He looked toward the elevator.
“I didn't come here to hurt you.””
“That's exactly what someone says when they're about to hurt someone.””
“I came because I needed to know.””
“Know what?””
His eyes moved past me.
Toward the elevators.
Toward the room where my wife and my son were.
“Whether she told you the truth.””
I felt my fists tighten.
“You don't get to talk about truth.””
“Maybe I don't.””
He looked back at me.
“But I know something you don't.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course you do.””
“James.””
“No. Tell me. What secret does the man my wife cheated with know that I don't?””
His face tightened.
Then he said something I wasn't prepared for.
“I wasn't the reason she betrayed you.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“I made mistakes.””
“That's an interesting way to describe sleeping with another man's wife.””
His eyes dropped.
“I deserve that.””
“Yes, you do.””
“But I wasn't the first person she called.””
My anger paused.
“What?””
Adrian looked at me.
“She didn't come to me first.””
The lobby suddenly felt too quiet.
“What are you saying?””
He hesitated.
Then he reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
“I didn't want to show you this.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because when I saw the baby's name…”
He swallowed.
“I knew she still hadn't told you.””
My heart started pounding.
“Tell me what?””
Adrian unlocked his phone.
Then he showed me a picture.
Not a message.
Not a document.
A photo.
A hospital bracelet.
A newborn baby.
My newborn baby?
No.
Not possible.
I looked closer.
The picture was old.
Very old.
The date at the top was six years ago.
My hands went cold.
“Where did you get this?””
Adrian looked at me.
“Because I was there.””
My voice barely worked.
“There for what?””
He didn't answer immediately.
And that scared me.
Because people only hesitate when the truth is dangerous.
Finally, he said:
“The night Emily disappeared.””
My heart dropped.
I remembered that night.
Of course I did.
The night she told me she needed space.
The night she stayed at her mother's house.
The night before she came back crying.
The night before she confessed she had seen Adrian.
I had spent six years believing I knew what happened.
But apparently…
I only knew the version I was given.
“What are you talking about?””
Adrian looked at me.
“James, Emily didn't tell you everything about that night.””
I stared at him.
“What happened?””
He took a breath.
“She wasn't running away from you.””
I waited.
“She was running from someone else.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Adrian looked directly into my eyes.
And then he said the name I never expected.
“Her father.””
I said nothing.
Because that answer made no sense.
Emily's father had died before we met.
At least…
That was what she told me.
I looked at Adrian.
“You're lying.””
“I wish I was.””
“You're telling me Emily's dead father was involved?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I'm telling you the man Emily said was dead…”
He paused.
“…wasn't.””
The world seemed to stop.
I stared at him.
My mind refused to process the words.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“No, you don't get to walk in here and destroy my life with some ridiculous story.””
Adrian didn't move.
“I know how it sounds.””
“Because it's insane.””
“Yes.””
“Then why say it?””
“Because your son was born today.””
His voice softened.
“And because if Emily named him Adrian, it means she knows the past is coming back.””
I felt sick.
“Why would she name my son after you?””
Adrian looked away.
“She didn't.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She didn't name him after me.””
“Then why?””
His eyes met mine.
“She named him after someone else.””
I waited.
“Someone named Adrian.””
The silence after that was unbearable.
“Who?””
Adrian's face turned serious.
“Someone who was supposed to be dead.””
I looked toward the elevators.
Toward Emily.
Toward my wife.
The woman who had just given birth to my son.
The woman I thought I knew.
And for the first time in six years…
I wondered if I had ever known her at all.
“Take me upstairs,” I said.
Adrian looked surprised.
“You want to go back?””
“Yes.””
“James—”
“I said take me upstairs.””
He studied my face.
Then slowly nodded.
As we walked toward the elevator, I realized something terrifying.
I had entered the hospital expecting to become a father.
Instead, I was walking back into a mystery.
And the person holding the key to it all…
was the woman lying in that hospital bed.
May you like
My wife.
Emily.
