Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Her Tears
The elevator ride back to the maternity floor felt longer than any journey I had ever taken.
Adrian stood beside me in silence.
That almost made it worse.
I had expected him to talk.
To defend himself.
To explain.
To give me some kind of speech about how he wasn't the villain I believed him to be.
But he didn't.
He just stared at the numbers above the elevator doors as they slowly climbed.
Five.
Six.
Seven.
Every second gave my mind more room to create questions.
Questions I didn't want answers to.
Because sometimes the truth is not something you discover.
Sometimes it's something that destroys everything you already built.
When the elevator stopped, the doors opened.
I stepped out first.
Adrian followed.
The hallway looked exactly the same.
Same white walls.
Same quiet footsteps.
Same smell of disinfectant.
But I wasn't the same person who had walked through there thirty minutes ago.
Before, I was a husband waiting to meet his son.
Now, I was a man walking back toward his wife wondering what parts of his marriage were real.
When we reached the room, I stopped outside the door.
Adrian stopped too.
“You should go in alone,” he said.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because this is between you and her.””
I almost laughed.
“Funny.””
“What?””
“You spent years being part of our marriage.””
His face tightened.
“I know.””
“And now you're telling me this is between us?””
Adrian looked down.
“I deserve that.””
I studied him.
For years, I had imagined this moment.
Me standing in front of Adrian Cole.
The man who helped break my marriage.
The man I blamed for the pain.
But now that he was standing there…
I didn't feel satisfaction.
I felt confused.
Because the enemy I had prepared myself to hate looked like someone carrying his own burden.
And I hated that.
I wanted him to be easy to hate.
It would have been simpler.
The door opened before I could say anything.
Emily's eyes widened when she saw Adrian.
Then she looked at me.
The fear returned.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“James…”
I walked inside.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Her expression changed.
She looked at Adrian.
Then back at me.
“How much do you know?””
That question hurt more than anything.
Because it wasn't:
“What are you talking about?””
It wasn't:
“Who told you that?””
It was:
“How much do you know?””
Like there was a measurement.
Like the truth was something she could control.
I closed the door behind me.
“Enough to know you lied.””
Emily looked down.
The baby was sleeping against her.
Our son.
My son.
I wanted to focus on him.
I wanted to forget everything else.
But I couldn't.
Not anymore.
“James…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I need you to answer one question.””
She looked at me.
“Did Adrian tell me the truth?””
Her eyes moved toward him.
Adrian didn't speak.
He didn't have to.
Emily's silence answered for her.
I felt something break inside me.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a small crack.
The kind you don't notice until everything starts falling apart.
“Emily.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn't want you to know like this.””
I stared at her.
“Like this?””
I pointed toward Adrian.
“You mean with another person telling me?””
She looked away.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She didn't answer.
“When were you going to tell me?””
“After the baby was born.””
I laughed quietly.
“After?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I needed time.””
“For what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“To make sure you were safe.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
Emily looked at Adrian.
Then back at me.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
She took a shaky breath.
“I spent years trying to protect you.””
I stared at her.
“Protect me from what?””
She looked at the baby.
“From the truth.””
The room became silent.
I moved closer.
“Start talking.””
She wiped her face.
“Before we met…”
I interrupted.
“You said your father died.””
Her face changed.
There it was.
The thing she didn't want me to mention.
“My father did die.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“No, Emily.””
She looked at him sharply.
“Don't.””
“You know that's not true.””
“Not now.””
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Emily's hands shook.
“James…”
“No.””
I pointed at the chair beside the bed.
“Sit down.””
She stared at me.
“What?””
“Sit down and tell me everything.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
For a moment, she looked like the woman I married.
The woman who used to fall asleep on my shoulder while watching movies.
The woman who laughed so loudly she embarrassed herself.
The woman who held my hand during my darkest days.
But then I remembered something.
People can love you and still hide things from you.
Those two things can exist at the same time.
Emily slowly nodded.
“Okay.””
She looked at Adrian.
“Can you leave?””
Adrian didn't move.
“Emily—”
“Please.””
He looked at me.
I nodded.
Not because I trusted him.
But because this was something I needed to hear from her.
Adrian stepped outside.
The door closed.
For the first time since entering that room, it was just us.
Me.
Emily.
And our newborn son.
She took a deep breath.
“My father's name was Daniel.””
I said nothing.
“He wasn't a good man.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She swallowed.
“It means everyone thought he was successful.””
Her voice became quieter.
“He owned businesses. He donated money. People respected him.””
“And?””
“And at home, he was different.””
I felt my anger changing.
Not disappearing.
Changing.
“He hurt you?””
Emily looked down.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
“How?””
She shook her head.
“I don't want to talk about that.””
“You need to.””
“I know.””
Her fingers brushed against the baby's blanket.
“When I was nineteen, I tried to leave.””
I frowned.
“Leave where?””
“Home.””
“Why didn't you?””
“Because he found me.””
The room felt colder.
“He threatened me.””
“With what?””
“With everything.””
She laughed sadly.
“He had money. Power. Connections. He knew how to make people disappear.””
I stared at her.
“And you told everyone he died?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted me to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He told me if I ever exposed him, he would destroy everyone I cared about.””
I looked at the baby.
“Everyone?””
Emily nodded.
“You.””
The answer hit me.
“You were protecting me?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She looked hurt.
“No?””
“No, Emily. You don't get to decide what I can handle.””
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
“And you don't know what he was capable of.””
“Then why bring his name into our son's life?””
Her eyes filled again.
“Because I thought it was over.””
I stared at her.
“What was over?””
“The fear.””
Silence.
“I thought he was gone.””
“Because he died?””
She hesitated.
“No.””
My heart sank.
“Then why?””
Emily whispered:
“Because Adrian helped me.””
I looked away.
Of course.
There it was.
The connection.
“The night you cheated.””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I felt anger return.
“So this whole time, Adrian wasn't just the man you cheated with.””
“No.””
“He was your hero.””
Her face twisted.
“That isn't what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
Emily looked at me.
“Adrian found me.””
“Where?””
“At a motel.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why were you there?””
“Because I ran.””
“From your father?””
“Yes.””
“And Adrian followed?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He was looking for me because he was worried.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That's convenient.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“Because it sounds like you're rewriting history.””
She closed her eyes.
“James, I was broken.””
I didn't respond.
“I was terrified. I hadn't told anyone what my father had done. I had spent years pretending everything was normal.””
Her voice cracked.
“Then you came into my life.””
I looked at her.
“And?””
“And I loved you.””
The words hurt.
Because I believed them.
That was the worst part.
“I loved you so much that I wanted to forget everything before you.””
She looked at the baby.
“But then my past found me.””
I frowned.
“What does Adrian have to do with your father?””
Emily was silent.
Too silent.
“Emily.””
“He knew.””
“Who?””
“Adrian.””
She looked at me.
“He knew my father wasn't dead.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“He had proof.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Adrian?””
“No.””
She looked toward the door.
“Of what would happen if my father knew I had finally told someone.””
A long silence followed.
Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Is he alive?””
Emily didn't answer.
That was enough.
I stepped back.
“Emily.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
The word destroyed whatever hope I had left.
“Your father is alive.””
“Yes.””
“And you've known?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Six years.””
I stared at her.
Six years.
The exact amount of time she had told me Adrian was gone.
The exact amount of time she had told me everything was behind us.
“You knew for six years?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You weren't protecting me.””
My voice broke.
“You were keeping me trapped inside a lie.””
Emily started crying.
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
I looked at our son.
The little boy sleeping peacefully, unaware that his entire family was built on secrets.
“Do you know what the worst part is?””
Emily looked at me.
“I don't know what is real anymore.””
Her face collapsed.
“James…”
“I don't know if our marriage survived because we were strong…”
I swallowed.
“Or because you kept me from seeing the truth.””
A knock interrupted us.
Neither of us moved.
Then the door opened.
Adrian stood there.
His face was serious.
“We have a problem.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He stepped inside.
“He knows.””
Emily froze.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at her.
“Your father.””
The blood drained from her face.
“How?””
Adrian looked at me.
“Because someone called him.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian said the sentence that made my entire body go cold.
“And whoever called him…”
May you like
He looked at Emily.
“…used James' phone number.””
